At the Palais de la Decouverte in Paris, they showed me this experiment where a 1kg aluminium plate is levitated above a large coil of wire that is being supplied with 800A of alternating current at 900Hz. This is by far the best demonstration of electromagnetic induction I have ever seen.
Back in London, I visited the magnetic lab of Michael Faraday in the basement of the Royal Institution. It was here that he did his groundbreaking work on induction. People had previously observed that current in a wire causes a compass needle to deflect, but more exciting was the prospect of using a magnetic field to generate current. Faraday created his famous induction ring by winding two coils of insulated wire onto an iron ring. When he connected a battery to one coil, a small pulse of current was induced in the other. When the battery was disconnected, current was induced in the other direction. This led Faraday to the conclusion that current was induced in the second coil only when the magnetic field through it was changing.
And if they hadn't been wrapped on the same ring, Faraday may have noticed that the two coils repel each other when the current is induced due to the interaction of their magnetic fields. This is the same thing that is happening with the aluminium plate, except we're using alternating current to create a continually changing magnetic field. This induces an alternating current in the plate, producing an opposing magnetic field which levitates the disk.

A quantum computer works in a totally different way from a classical computer. Quantum bits or 'qubits' can exist in a superposition state of both zero and one simultaneously. This means that a set of two qubits can be in a superposition of four states, which therefore require four numbers to uniquely identify the state. So the amount of information stored in N qubits is two to the power of N classical bits.

Most poisonous mushrooms won’t kill you—they’ll simply cause a severe headache or vomiting. Death-cap mushrooms are not like the others. As little as half an Amanita phalloides contains enough toxin to kill an adult human. Ingestion of the poison in death-cap mushrooms, known as amatoxin, is responsible for 90 percent of deaths related to mushroom poisoning worldwide. Worse still, death caps can resemble nontoxic mushrooms and are said to be quite tasty. You might not know you’ve been poisoned until days after eating the highly toxic fungi.
While the mushrooms are historically endemic to Scandinavia and parts of northern Europe, the cultivation of non-native species of trees in North America has led to a “mushroom boom” in some areas of the continent.
“We’ve opened Pandora’s box,” the author Craig Childs says in a new animated video from The Atlantic. “There is no way you can stop them.” For more information, read “Death-Cap Mushrooms Are Spreading Across North America": https://www.theatlantic.com/sc....ience/archive/2019/0

The honour of the biggest galaxy ever discovered in the universe goes to the magnificent IC 1101. This giant elliptical galaxy completely eclipses the Milky Way, Andromeda, and every other galaxy in the known universe. But how did it become so large? What could be lying within? What does the future have in store for this titan of the heavens? We don't know much about this monster, but that hasn't stopped people from speculating on the possibilities that could lie around its estimated 100TN stars.

You've probably noticed that a lot of recipes for things like cookies and cakes all seem to call for the same temperature: 350 degrees Fahrenheit. You'd think there would be some variation there, so why 350? It's not actually arbitrary, and the reasons why are an interesting mixture of science and history.
Mankind has been baking for a long, long time, but it was only at the end of World War II that ovens started to come with exact temperature controls. In the few decades before that, ovens tended to come with only three options for temperature: slow, moderate, and hot.
If you happened to dig out any of your great-grandmother's recipes, you might be baffled by the bit that calls for baking in a "moderate" oven. It seems archaic today, but it was a huge step forward over how Victorian-era bakers judged whether or not their ovens were hot enough. They estimated oven temperature by sprinkling the bottom of the oven with flour. If it didn't catch fire and only started to blacken, then it was perfect. Don't try this at home!
Over the years, recipes have changed along with the technology we use to cook them. Old terminology was updated to new technology, and when recipes that called for a "moderate" oven were updated, the temperature was just estimated to be 350. A temperature which, incidentally, is usually in the middle of most oven dials.
Watch the video for more on the real reason we bake everything at 350 degrees.

For a really long time, Ricardo was obsessed with the idea of enlightenment, without really understanding what it was. He traveled the world, tried many forms of meditation, and read many books hoping that at some point he would achieve this elusive state.
At some point along the way, Ricardo suddenly asked himself something. Why was he in such a hurry to get there, to achieve enlightenment? He realized that it didn’t matter how many spiritual practices he did if he couldn’t enjoy the process and that his search for enlightenment was some kind of escape from his everyday life. So Ricardo decided to stop pursuing it and to focus only on finding contentment in the smaller things; to focus on finding contentment in everyday life. Ricardo is a keynote speaker, leadership coach, and author. He immigrated to the United States from Mexico City after graduating from photography school with the singular focus of building a career that would allow him to explore the world. Later he earned a Film degree at the University of Texas at Austin, then went on to create documentary work in Mexico and China, and to make the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain. His most recent project, Pedal South, entailed leading a team on a two-year cycling expedition from Alaska to Argentina. The purpose was to create a documentary that would give a perspective of the people and landscape of the Americas today.
His goal is to spread compassion, knowledge, and wisdom gained through overcoming inconceivable obstacles so people can unlock their potential, achieve what seems impossible, and find contentment. After documenting and researching over 50,000 coaching interactions in the workplace, Bill Eckstrom shares life-altering, personal and professional development ideas through the introduction of the “Growth Rings.” The rings illustrate how dangerous it can be to remain in a state of comfort and how being in discomfort is the only way to sustain growth. You’ll be amazed at the world-changing outcomes discomfort can have on your life and the lives of others.
Bill Eckstrom is an entrepreneur, author, speaker, outdoorsman and father of three. With a passion deeply rooted in growth and development, Bill has always been fascinated by the role a coach has on the performance of individuals and teams. As a result, he founded the EcSell Institute whose sole focus is to educate, track and measure coaching effectiveness for leaders within organizations around the world. This has led to hundreds of keynotes, published articles and e-books created from the research and documentation of coaching interactions and outcomes. How does the human brain work and how is it different from computers? If you think this is too complex to explain in a few minutes, you will be surprised. In this energetic and insightful talk, neuro-scientist Dr. Henning Beck gives insights into thought processes and tells you how you can create new ideas.
Dr. Henning Beck, neuroscientist and author, supports businesses to use brain-based approaches in order to develop innovative and efficient workflows. He studied biochemistry in Tübingen from 2003 to 2008. After his diploma thesis, he started his research at the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research and intensified his work at the Institute of Physiological Chemistry at the University of Ulm. Supported by a PhD scholarship granted by the Hertie Foundation he did his doctorate at the Graduate School of Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience in Tübingen. He expanded his scientific expertise by an International Diploma in Project Management at the University of California, Berkeley in 2013. Until 2014, he worked for start-ups in the San Francisco Bay Area to develop creative workspace designs and advanced communication styles based on neuroscientific principles.

Title: Consciousness : The Final Frontier
Synopsis: The exploration of inner space, our own consciousness, is ultimately connected to our discovery of outer space. Just as the world becomes a smaller place with increase in communication and transport technology, so the universe becomes a smaller place with the increase in meditation technology!
