Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach
Artists: Thomas Zehetmair (violin), Amsterdam Bach Soloists
The great Johann Sebastian Bach grew up around violin music: his father Johann Ambrosius was an accomplished violinist. This influence is reflected in Sebastian’s compositional output, which contains a large number of solo and ensemble works for the instrument – including the concertos on this recording.
The works, written in approximately 1720, are based on Vivaldi’s concerto model from the beginning of the 18th century, and – in the case of the D minor and G minor concertos – are reconstructions of the harpsichord concertos. Indeed, many of Bach’s concertos for harpsichord were in fact rearrangements of earlier instrumental works, and from the passagework in BWV 1052 and 1056 it is clear that the violin was originally the intended instrument. Together with rich-sounding dialogue that is a result of the contrast between the intricate solo passages and the slower-moving accompanying instruments, opportunities for virtuosic display abound in all of the works’ final movements, especially in the energetic Gigue of BWV1041.
Violinist Thomas Zehetmair studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum and made his festival debut at the Salzburg Festival aged just 16. He has since built up an impressive international career as a soloist, also performing with the Zehetmair Quartet, and is musical director of the Northern Sinfonia (UK) as well as guest conductor of several other major European orchestras. He is joined in the recording by the acclaimed Amsterdam Bach Soloists.

Described by the composer himself as ‘the king of instruments’, the organ and its music form a small but not insignificant part of Mozart’s vast œuvre. This new release, performed by acclaimed Italian organist Ivan Ronda, comprises all of his major works for the instrument, including the extended Adagio and Rondo in C minor and the small-scale works from the London Sketchbook. Also included is the charming Adagio in C for the glass harmonica: just 28 bars in length, the work was originally conceived for this curious instrument, which consists of glass bowls that rotate in water, but is equally effective on the organ. Mozart’s output of Church Sonatas – notable for their single movement form – are represented here by the Sonata in C K336, the only one to have a proper solo part for the organ, and was specially transcribed by André Isoir for this recording.
The disc is rounded off with the imposing Fantasia in F minor. Described in Mozart’s own catalogue of work as ‘an organ piece for a clock’, it was commissioned by Count Joseph Deym for a musical automaton that contained a small pipe organ. When transferred to an organ on the scale of that at the Church of Maria Vergine Immacolata in Gallo Cavour, Italy, where this recording was made, it takes on a certain grandeur, and exploits the various echo and dialogue effects of the instrument.

Telemann’s concertos offer a unique combination of virtuosity, wit and sense of the theatrical. Having taught himself to play the instrument as a child, the German master had a special understanding of and fondness for the recorder, and for it he created a new hybrid form, the Suite auf Concertenart, which combines soloistic display with baroque dances.
These suites and concertos may be less overtly virtuosic than works in the same genre which were beginning to appear around the same time over the other side of the Alps, but Telemann yields nothing to his Italian counterparts in terms of melodic freshness and fertility. The suites are styled in the French manner, as a series of courtly dances, though the A minor Suite features a grand and tragic ‘Air in the Italian style’ and concludes with a snappy Polonaise – one of Telemann’s favourite dance rhythms – reeling away like an inspired tavern fiddler.
Erik Bosgraaf’s discography on Brilliant Classics ranges from Vivaldi (BC94637 – now also available on LP) to Boulez (BC94842), not to mention two previous sets of Telemann – the solo fantasias (BC93757) and sonatas with basso continuo (BC95247) – as well as more rarely encountered delights by Jakob van Eyck (BC93391). These discs and others have garnered both popular attention and critical praise. Of Bosgraaf’s own, composer-approved transcription of the Dialogue de l’ombre double by Boulez, Gramophone commented that ‘balance between recorders and electronics is ideally judged, giving this music an immediacy yet also intimacy beyond that of any other recorded option.’
Closer to the recorder’s natural home in music several centuries earlier, Julie Anne Sadie wrote in the same magazine about Bosgraaf’s ‘magical version of the ubiquitous Four Seasons. ‘A carefully researched and arrestingly translucent chamber interpretation… the rapport between solo and ripieno forces is simply fabulous.’

Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach
Artist: Kristóf Baráti (violin)
Bach may well be one of the most widely acknowledged master composers of all time, but that only serves to make each performer’s interpretation of his work all the more challenging and distinctive: each musician must both do justice to the composer’s intention, making a decision as to the best way of conveying that within the music which is not fixed, and at the same time leave their own mark on the performance. This is especially true for these Sonatas and Partitas given the variety of styles in which such Baroque masterworks have been performed, ranging from the freely romantic to the strictly precise, and the technical challenge posed by these complex pieces for a single instrument.
The works in this collection are something of an enigma, not only because of the uncertainty surrounding the circumstances and date of their composition, but, more crucially, because of the way in which they stretch the capacity for polyphony of a single violin beyond its physical limit. It is as though Bach had written for a full ensemble of instruments – but on a single staff. Modern musicians have even speculated as to the possible existence of a special bow with which an exact performance of the music might have been achieved in Bach’s day. The music is no less rich for all of this, however: on the contrary, the harmonic complexity of these pieces is at once captivating and beautiful; the implied but absent notes are thrillingly suggestive; and the multiplicity of voices leaves the listener marvelling at Bach’s compositional vision and the performer’s ability.
This accomplished musical feat is performed by Kristóf Baráti, a Hungarian violinist who has worked with an astonishing number of world-famous orchestras and conductors. Baráti plays a 1703 Stradivarius violin, and one can sense this echo of the era of the pieces as much as one can his intense emotional involvement with the music.

Composers: Antonio Vivaldi
Artist: Ensemble J.M. Anciuti , Paolo Pollastri baroque (oboe), Gaetano Nasillo (cello), Alberto Guerra (baroque bassoon), Giovanna Losco (harpsichord)
This addition to Brilliant Classics’ ever-growing recorded catalogue of music by the asthmatic ‘Red Priest’ of Venice, Antonio Vivaldi, is of oboe sonatas, played (as are most of the recordings in that catalogue) by an Italian ensemble with full awareness of the latest scholarly research into Vivaldi’s manuscripts and performing styles, and on period instruments, soaked in an appreciation of how most stylishly to realise the music of the Italian Baroque.
The oboist himself, Paolo Pollastri, is oboist with Rome’s Orchestra nazionale di Santa Cecilia, which works with many of the world’s great conductors; he has also contributed fine booklet notes to this release. So both technical and scholarly address are not lacking for this album of sprightly chamber music, which was composed not for the usual crowd of orphaned prodigies at the Ospedale della Pietà, but more likely for travelling virtuosi who made Venice a stop on their itinerary. Consequently the manuscripts for the sonatas here are scattered far and wide, from Cambridge to Dresden. Pollastri also includes an apocryphal work, once attributed to Vivaldi but now ascribed to the Frenchman de Chédeville, for its smooth Francophone style and pastoral idiom.

It may seem surprising: can 10 discs really contain all of Arcangelo Corelli’s output? They can, and do, but the surprise is merited, for the influence and reputation of these works far outstrips their quantity (and how often can one say that of a Barock composer!). On display here is the apogee of Barock form as displayed in the genres of Solo Sonatas, Trio Sonatas and Concerti Grossi, full of sparkling virtuosity and an intimate knowledge and love of the violin and its potential as a solo instrument.
The influence was felt most immediately in Rome, where he was based for his adult life, but publication of these collections soon earned him a name across Europe, as much as his prowess as a solo violinist did; for this was the golden age of the composer as creator, when composition went hand in hand with performance. Of course there is plenty more music Corelli composed which hasn’t survived, or at least not on manuscripts with his name on them, for Corelli as an impresario frequently staged oratorios to which he would have contributed sinfonias and instrumental numbers.
What survives is never less than highly polished; often bold, and continually inventive, as is more than evident in these performances from a welcome and uniform perspective by a leading Dutch period-instrument ensemble. And it’s unique; there is no other Corelli box on the market, nor has such a project ever been attempted before or since.

Among the most revered virtuosos of all time, Nicolò Paganini was a true musical legend of his era, inspiring musicians such as Robert Schumann to forge his own career as a pianist. Franz Schubert was also a regular audience member at Paganini’s concerts, despite the outlandish ticket prices.
Paganini often remarked that, despite his legendary status as a violinist, he found it rather difficult to compose for the instrument. This release presents Paganini's complete violin concertos, performed by violinist Alexandre Dubach accompanied by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo.

Bringing together all seven of Schubert’s completed symphonies, as well as the much-loved B minor ‘Unfinished’, this set charts the development of Schubert’s voice as a symphonist. His first six symphonies were composed between 1813 and 1818 for the orchestra at the religious school that he attended in Vienna. Although they could be considered to be apprentice works, and are clearly influenced by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and – in the case of the Sixth Symphony – Rossini, they are remarkable achievements for such a young composer, and the listener can hear some of the hallmarks of Schubert’s more forward-looking, romantic style, such as a bolder and richer harmonic language, beginning to emerge.
After a serious illness in 1822, from which he only partially recovered, Schubert composed his final symphonic masterpieces, the ‘Unfinished’ (1822) and the ‘Great’ (1825–6). From the haunting slow introduction and the extraordinary sense of pathos of the ‘Unfinished’ to the joyful and rhythmically vital ‘Great’ symphony, both works showcase Schubert the symphonist at the peak of his powers and are some of the most popular and enduring pieces in the orchestral canon.
Schubert’s complete symphonies are performed here by the legendary Staatskapelle Dresden under the inspired direction of celebrated conductor Herbert Blomstedt, praised by Gramophone for his "incomparably refined sensitivity and canny interpretative prowess".

Beethoven’s oeuvre only comprises a small collection of works for cello and piano, but that the composer was an accomplished writer for this combination of instruments is evident from the fact that Jean-Louis Duport, one of Frederick II’s court cellists and one of the most revered musicians of his day, incorporated many of the techniques found in the Op.5 sonatas into his instruction manual for cello.

The two musicians Timora Rosler and Klára Würtz have been playing together for more than 15 years, having won several chamber music prizes. They performed the Beethoven cycle several times in concert over the years, and their interpretation has ripened to such an extent that the time came to record it. And here it is: every note alive and vibrant, played with gusto and feeling, alternating melancholy and joy, sadness and sheer fun.

Here’s another fine disc, unavailable for some time, now receiving a new lease of life, and with no significant competition. It’s true that the complete works for cello and orchestra amount to less than half this disc’s duration, comprising as they do a couple of miniatures (the Pezzo Capriccioso and Nocturne) and the evergreen Rococo Variations. But the first point of importance is that the fine Russian cellist Alexander Rudin plays the original version of the score, and not the much more widely available piece of well-meaning butchery by a cellist of chaikovsky’s own time,Wilhelm Fitzenhagen. Fitzenhagen fiddled around with the order of the variations and left one out altogether, as well as somewhat simplifying the composer’s original and strenuous but effective demands upon the soloist. A return to the original reveals what we have been missing in the way of a rather more substantial and coherent work, and there are but one or two rival versions on the market.
In addition, Rudin complements the Variations with the gorgeous interlude from Swan Lake that features a solo cello, as well as an arrangement of the famous Andante cantabile from the First String Quartet. He then conducts this Muscovy orchestra himself in the Serenade for Strings.
Alexander Rudin was born in 1960 and studied with the cello legend Daniil Shafran. His pedigree in this music is impeccable.

Dmitri Shostakovich wrote symphonies and string quartets with violent and intense music. But he did have a sense of humour as well. Just as he could handle the very un-Russian jazz idiom. Both jazz suites show the light-hearted side of Russia’s most important 20th-century composer.

Composer: Antonio Vivaldi
Artist: L'Arte dell'arco, Federico Guglielmo (conductor)
Antonio Vivaldi was one of the most successful composers of the Baroque era, best known for his iconic set concertos for violin, The Four Seasons. L’Estro Armonico Op.3 is among the most important printed editions of Vivaldi’s concertos; the works immediately met with great acclaim after their publication in 1711. Indeed, this was the first collection of concerti to be published with a title, showing that the composer himself was aware of the nature of this extraordinary event. The work was originally dedicated to Prince Ferdinando de’ Medici, son and heir of Cosimo III, Grand Duke of Tuscany. L’Arte dell’Arco is an internationally renowned ensemble that has achieved great acclaim through performances and recordings.
After the iconic ‘Le Quattro Stagioni’, the collection of 12 violin concertos Op. 3, ‘L’Estro Armonico’ is the most popular and well known of all of Vivaldi’s works. It is vintage Vivaldi: lively, exuberant and brilliant allegros, spun‐out cantilenas in Italian ‘belcanto’ style, and a general feel of Italian passion and good humour. Violinist Federico Guglielmo is one of Italy’s foremost fiddlers, a pioneer of Early Music Performance Practice, a bon vivant understanding the secrets of Vivaldi’s language like few others. Played from the New Vivaldi Edition as published by the Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi and the Fondazione Giorgio Cini.

The year 2004 commemorates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Leos Janacek, one of Czech’s most famous and original composers.
Janacek’s music is highly personal, his language immediately recognizable: short, almost aphoristic motives form the basis of a highly dramatic discourse.
His piano works include the famous Piano Sonata (written after the death of a man during a worker’s demonstration), the highly attractive cycle “On an overgrown path” (short pieces of sometimes violent, sometimes painfully intimate emotions), the cycle “In the mist”, and series on Czech and Moravian folk melodies.
Norwegian pianist Hakon Austbö already recorded extensively for Brilliant Classics (Satie, Brahms Klavierstücke, Grieg Lyrische Stücke), and proves himself again a true master in the short form, completely identifying himself with the composer and his inner thoughts.

Young Mendelssohn composed extensively for the piano. From early concertos and sonatas he quickly established his ‘mature’ style in works such as the Rondo capriccioso, and the Andante cantabile e Presto agitato. The masterpieces that followed include the famous Songs without Words/Lieder ohne Worte. On this complete recording, these piano 'songs' are played by Dutch pianist Frank van der Laar.

These days Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is mainly associated with his later works. Born in 1935 he wrote ‘avant-garde’ works at first. In the nineteen seventies he increasingly found his inspiration in medieval religious music, both western and eastern European. This first transpired in his Für Alina for piano. It already has the telling low tempo and (two) layers. Pärt further extended his so-called tintinnabuli (i.e. bells) style in small-scale pieces like the different versions of Spiegel im Spiegel and Variationen zur Gesundung von Arinuschka. Although this last piece has ‘classical’ features as well.
This release shows an aspect of Arvo Pärt which is seldomly heard: his small-scale chamber music works. As such this recording is a valuable addition to the material already available on the market.
