Boosey & Hawkes Concert Band - Grade 4
Welsh composer Karl Jenkins dedicated his landmark mass The Armed Man to the victims of the 1998-1999 war in Kosovo. More recently it is been associated with remembrances of 9/11. The French Renaissance song “L'homme armé” serves as the basis for the first movement of the mass, beautifully adapted here for standard concert band instrumentation. With its relentless pulse and haunting strains, this is a dramatically emotional and riveting work!

Once again The Call to Prayer was performed by Hassen Rasool who was delighted to be asked to perform the Adhan at The ancient church of St Pancras, on Euston Road, London, United Kingdom on the 4th July 2018.

The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins with Haydn’s Mass in Time of War was performed to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One.

Presented by : UBS CHORAL SOCIETY & ORCHESTRA, BANK OF AMERICA, MERRILL LYNCH CHOIR & SINFONIETTA, AON CHOIR, ROYAL ACADEMY CHOIR, FAIRLAWN SINGERS.

The Adhan (The Call to Prayer) was performed in the middle of the musical composition, providing a brilliantly contrasted evening of music and spirituality which was both exhilarating and inspiring. See the end of the video to hear some raw emotion from some members of the audience.

한국 초연인 Karl Jenkins 작곡의 Benedictus(축복)는 서정성이 강한 도입부와 포르테시시모의 강력한 반전을 포함한 곡으로 Mass for Peace 평화미사곡 - 무장한 사람(The Armed Man)가운데 12번째 곡으로 미사곡의 형식에 반전(反戰)의 메시지를 담고 있다. 우리가 겪었던 전쟁의 상처와 이 땅에 다시는 없어야 할 전쟁의 아픔을 노래하였다면, 젠킨스의 축복은 이제는 앞으로 세상에서 없어져야 할 전쟁을 음악에 담고 있다. 느리고 아름다운 연주는 서정적이지만 슬프지만은 않다.
조국을 위해 젊은 청춘을 바친 숭고한 영혼의 넋을 거룩한 아름다움으로 담았다. Cello와 남성 성악의 장엄함을 통해 남성적인 서정성과 강인함 그리고 역동성을 느낄 수 있는 작품이다.
