About this Album:
In 1978 Alfred Schnittke (1934-98) wrote the incidental music for a production of The Inspector’s Tale, an adaptation for stage of Gogol’s Dead Souls. It was to have been directed by Yuri Lyubimov, but the Soviet government banned the production. A suite was assembled from the score by Gennadi Rozhdenstvensky, and two leading colleagues of Schnittke – Gubaidulina and Denisov contributed a jointly composed march, which opens this CD. In 1985 the music was choreographed, the ballet, called Esquisses was performed at the Bolshoi. Schnittke composed a number of new pieces for this production. The characters in the action are all from Gogol, but in addition to The Dead Souls, we meet Tchitchikov, Major Kovalyov’s Nose, and Ferdinand VIII from Notes of a Madman. A passage from the book is recited in his piece, and is read by the conductor on this CD.

The drunken sot who glares out at us from Ilya Repin’s celebrated portrait looks more like a tramp than a composer, and Mussorgsky’s music has a similarly uncompromising expressive power, music that seems to work despite rather than
because of itself. Pianists have wrestled with the unpianistic corners of his most famous work since he composed it in 1874 in memory of his friend, the painter Viktor Hartmann, who had died the previous year.
Mussorgsky portrayed some of Hartmann's pictures in music when they were displayed at an exhibition in Saint Petersburg. The cycle of ten individual paintings is linked by the famous ‘promenade’, symbolizing the viewer of the pictures wandering through the exhibition. Hartmann’s bold and puzzling vignettes find their perfect analogue in Mussorgsky’s pianistic reimagining, but fellow composers could hardly leave the orchestral potential of this
often‐awkward music alone. Ravel wasn’t the first to mix his orchestral palette with Mussorgsky’s colours, but his version has justly stood the test of time, and stands alone for its sensitivity to the pungent, folkloristic flavour of the original.
Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” is one of the most famous and most frequently performed romantic piano cycles of the entire repertoire. It contains colourful, highly original and gripping musical depictions of a series of painting by Mussorgsky’s friend Hartmann. This release offers both the original piano version and the Ravel orchestration, filled up with the orchestral “A Night on Bare Mountain” and the more modest, but no less impressive piano cycle by Tchaikovsky: The Seasons.

When Engelbert Humperdinck’s sister Adelheid turned the Grimm brothers’ fairytale of Hänsel und Gretel into a short libretto for her children, she asked her composer-brother to set the words to music. The resulting performance in their family home delighted Humperdinck’s two young nieces and this domestic success soon became a fully-fledged opera destined for the international stage. The imaginative score expertly encapsulates the life of children, from exuberant dances and witty exchanges to the sweet solemnity of the Evening Prayer. Their journey into the forest is wonderfully captured in the music; as they move further into the ever-threatening woods, the music becomes increasingly opaque, mirroring the darkening of the trees. When the sandman appears, the sinister theme that had heralded his arrival is interrupted, as his harmlessness is revealed, and he leads the children into a peaceful sleep. The menacing theme returns with the arrival of the wicked gingerbread witch; only when the children succeed in stuffing her into her own oven do the exuberant dance-like patterns re-emerge, as Hänsel and Gretel joyfully celebrate their triumph along with the children brought back to life by the broken spell.
Despite its apparent simplicity, Humperdinck’s opera contains a wealth of themes, with a score remarkable for its range of colours and textures, clearly inspired by Wagner.

About this Album:
Sacred music occupied an important role in 16th-century Spain, but there is much evidence that secular vocal polyphony held a place in society too. Such music is to be found in the little-known Juan Vázquez’s Recopilación which dates from around 1560; as well as canciones and soneto-madrigals, the collection includes various villancicos – the main focus of this recording – then a popular style of song and which Vázquez clearly overhauled through replacing endless repetition with melodic and rhythmic variety. That Vázquez’s contribution to the genre was both popular and significant (he wrote over 90 in total, most of which were set to texts by leading Spanish poets of the day) is demonstrated by the many later arrangements of his villancicos for vocal soloists with vihuela accompaniment.
Performing these highly engaging, deftly written works are the Dutch vocal group Quink, founded in 1978 and ranking among the world’s best a cappella ensembles. The recording, which can only serve to increase our appreciation for this largely-forgotten composer, underlines the group’s astonishing variety of tonal colour – of their Benjamin Britten CD, the New York Times drew attention to Quink’s ‘elegant phrasing, impeccable intonation and a purity of tone reminiscent of Renaissance madrigals.’
Little is known about the life of Spanish composer Juan Vasquez (fl. 16th century). A skilled and successful composer in the service of the King of Spain. His compositions are mainly secular, in the form of polyphonic madrigals and ‘Villancicos’, popular songs set for a vocal ensemble of 4 or 5 voices. The madrigals are on poetic texts by well known poets like Boscan and Garcilaso. The Villancicos are based on folk music and traditional texts, music brimming with joy, happiness and Spanish vitality!

In a series of first recordings, Brilliant Classics has explored the rich culture of non-operatic music in Italy during the late-Romantic era and the first decades of the last century. Particular attention has been given to the flourishing traditions of instrumental and chamber music, with recent releases not only of well-known names such as Respighi (BC94445), Martucci (BC94816 and a brand-new release of piano trios, BC94968) and Nino Rota (BC95237), but less familiar, often no less inspired composers such as Antonio Bazzini (BC95030), Ildebrando Pizzetti (BC9202) and Guido Fano (BC95353).
Among these lesser lights must be counted Roffredo Caetani (1871-1961). A Brilliant Classics release of his piano music (BC94909) has already disclosed an effusively lyrical, unashamedly Romantic voice working in the post-Lisztian tradition regardless of musical upheavals and revolutions around him. Caetani had more reason than most for his reactionary temperament, as godson to Liszt himself. The Hungarian composer recognized the young Roman’s talent and entrusted it to his friend Giovanni Sgambati for further instruction and refinement.
The Op.1 No.1 Quartet on this release was one of the first products of Caetani’s student years, composed when he was just 17 years old, but distinguished by a precocious mastery of the genre, as contemporary critics were not slow to recognize. The quartet is cast in a single, wide-ranging span: an innovative structure for the time, if in its way the writing is unmistakably indebted to the example of Beethoven. Twenty years later, Caetani returned to the quartet genre once more with his Op.12
in F minor: a three-movement work of considerably greater breadth in both its themes and development.

This young guitarist’s debut album is the perfect introduction to his artistry, showcasing as it does four leading 20th-century composers of guitar music – Antonio José Palacios, Alberto Ginastera, Antonio Lauro and Julio Gentil Montaña – composers who in turn represent four different countries and four styles of music that differ widely both aesthetically and in terms of the traditions from which they spring.

Among the most promising Spanish composers of his generation, Antonio José was acclaimed by Ravel and counted Lorca and Dali among his associates, but like Lorca, he was executed by a Falangist firing squad during the Spanish Civil War. Only 34 years of age, he had accumulated a catalogue of music impressive not only for its depth but its sophistication, exemplified by the substantial Guitar Sonata which is his best-known work. The Sonata by the Argentine Alberto Ginastera is no less imposing in structure, and harmonically much more adventurous than José’s bluesy neo-classicism. The four Venezuelan waltzes by Antonio Lauro are brief and charming early works, the first three dedicated to his daughter and two nieces, the last named Yacambú after an orchid-rich national park in the northern Andes. The first movement of the fourth Colombian Suite by Julio Gentil Montaña (1942-2011) is likewise named after that country’s capital, Bogotà, and it is followed by three interpretations of national dances, concluding with a snappy Porro.
The 23-year-old Deion Cho is of South Korean origin, currently studying and working in Spain. He has given the album his signature with an arrangement of a popular Korean folksong, ‘About 500 Years’, clearly inflected by his years of work in Hispanic and Iberian music.

The most famous scion of a musical family which stretched across at least ten generations, Johann Sebastian Bach had a very strong sense of history, tradition, and his evolving place in it, and was instrumental in curating and adding to the library of the music of the Bachs, which was known as the Altbachisches Archiv. This archive mostly comprises vocal music; now the Italian organist has created a fascinating instrumental counterpart, with short organ works by ten members of the family ranging from Heinrich Bach (1615–1692) to Wilhelm Friedemann Ernst Bach (1779–1845). And so, during the course of the disc, we move, always guided by the constraints of Protestant thought and liturgy, through austere low Baroque chorales to spectacular, late-Classical fantasias.

One of the giants of the historically informed performance world needs little introduction; nor indeed his sympathy to Mozart’s oeuvre as already demonstrated in recordings of the three da Ponte operas that have met with wide acclaim and many awards for their closely observed intimacy, their sense of fun and drama and their well-chosen casts, at one with Kuijken’s vision of these jewels of human and music drama.
His recording of Mozart’s magical last opera, however, has not received wide availability until now, in its appearance as part of Brilliant Classics’s comprehensive Opera Collection. The recording was made live at the Notre-Dame Church in Beaune, in France, in 2004. The cast is highly recognisable from many other fine productions of Baroque and early music, including Suzie LeBlanc (Pamina); Cornelius Hauptmann (Tamino); Stephan Genz (Papageno) and Isolde Siebert (Queen of Night).
Of course the orchestral contribution to this recording is no less distinguished: La Petite Bande features the cream of Continental period-instrument musicians, and is led by Kuijken himself, a violinist as much at home in Mozart’s world as he is in Bach’s.

The common theme of the three works presented on these 2 CD is Death, the transience of earthly existence. Britten’s famous and substantial War Requiem was written in commemoration of the 2nd World War victims, dedicated to the people of the destroyed city of Coventry, Penderecki’s Threnody is dedicated to the victims of Hiroshima, and Alban Berg’s moving Violin Concerto is written “to the memory of an angel”, the death of the 19 year old daughter of Alma Mahler.
Performances conducted by the great East-German conductor Herbert Kegel, a specialist in 20th century masterworks. He conducts the Dresdner Philharmonie and the Leipzig Radio-Sinfonieorchester, soloists include the great Kari Lövaas and Theo Adam.

Every now and again a piece of music comes along that captures the public’s attention and imagination – a composition, movement or excerpt which, on account of the enjoyment or interest we continue to derive from it upon repeated listening, is catapulted into the classical canon where it assumes the status of a permanent fixture.

About this Album:
Il rè pastore was commissioned in 1775 for the visit of Austria’s Archduke Maximilian Franz to Salzburg. Written in just six weeks, the opera is based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio in which Alexander the Great (Alessandro) discovers that young shepherd Aminta is the rightful heir to the throne, taking it upon himself to restore the boy to power. Regardless of the composer’s youth, several moments in the opera show hints of the more mature Mozart, including the aria ‘L’amerò sarò costante’ in which rippling strings and lush orchestration are combined with a poignant, yearning vocal line. Another highlight is the glorious ensemble finale of Act II, a feature that would become a vital characteristic of Mozart’s later operas.

While J.S. Bach, along with Buxtehude, has long been considered the father of Baroque organ music in northern Germany, organ music connoisseurs today have started to look beyond the established canon of this time to the great composer’s contemporaries. Particularly interesting are three German composers who were also active around the same time as Bach: Erich, Saxer and Druckenmüller, whose complete works (as discovered in manuscript form) feature on this release.
All three were unusual in that they came from provincial areas of Germany rather than being based in a thriving cultural centre like Hamburg or Lübeck. Druckenmüller – just two years younger than Bach – was highly unusual in publishing completely original Concertos for organ solo, in contrast to Bach’s settings of established chorale tunes that were the norm. The Concertos – all fast–slow–fast – are written in the style that was fast becoming the established one in Germany, the Italian Style. Slightly younger was Georg Saxer, whose style was starting to reflect the new galant Rococo. His Preludes, followed by a long Fugue, reflect new tensions with dominant seventh chords that seem to hang in the air, creating moments of suspense. Daniel Erich – more of Buxtehude’s time than Bach’s – wrote chorale preludes, of which only four survive. They reveal a composer full of expressivity and elegance in the way he embellishes the theme, whether in the soprano or the pedal. His original compositions show a remarkable originality as well as knowledge of the idiomatic writing of the time.
Italian organist Manuel Tomadin’s passion for these undiscovered composers comes across clearly in this release. He has specially chosen a Baroque organ by Arp Schnitger, the most important organ builder of the period, who worked closely with both Saxer and Druckenmüller during his life, making this a wonderfully authentic recording.
This new recording features the magnificent Schnitger organ of the St. Michael Church in Zwolle, the Netherlands. It was built in 1721 by Arp Schnitger and his sons, and after careful restoration over the last decades by Flentrop the organ is restored in its full glory, one of the finest examples of the Golden Age of organ building, the Baroque.
The works on this recording are derived from the Husumer Orgelbuch (Husum organ book), a collection of organ works by North German major and minor masters. Presented are substantial Preludes by Georg Wilhelm Saxer, Choralvorspiele by Daniel Erich and two Concertos by Wolfgang Druckenmüller, written in the Italian style, as original compositions and not as transcriptions of Italian Concerti grossi, as was the custom of that period.
Manuel Tomadin is one of the foremost Italian organists, a scholar, teacher and passionate musician. He won the Grand Prix of the Schnitger Organ Competition of Alkmaar in 2011, and recorded several CD’s for Brilliant Classics, among which the complete keyboard works by Alberti (BC95161). He wrote the excellent liner notes for the booklet, which also contains all information on the organ.
