Science Friday spreads Pi Day cheer on the streets of New York. Meet the Pi enthusiasts lingering outside of New York University's math department.

Biology graduate student Tom McDonagh is taking shadow puppetry to the next level. One of his latest productions is based on the (true) story of an American doctor and French inventor who took to the skies in a hydrogen balloon and made the first trip -- by air -- across the English Channel. McDonagh, whose Ph.D. project at Rockefeller University has centered on building a microscope, is also experimenting with shadow puppet production -- from laser cut puppets to 3D shadows. McDonagh and puppeteers Jo Jo Hristova, Arlee Chadwick and Emma Wiseman will be performing several of his pieces at Puppet Festival rEvolution on August 6th, 2013 in Swarthmore, PA.

In most scientific research, upwards of 90 percent of people will associate the pointy one with "kiki" and and the rounded one with "bouba." This worldwide phenomenon is known as the "Bouba-Kiki Effect" and has been recorded in many languages, and even with toddlers. Why most of us share the same tendency to link certain nonsensical visual and auditory stimuli isn't clear, but cognitive psychologists like Kelly McCormick have several compelling theories.

Shostakovich' music is the music of 20th century Russia, from the turbulent Revolution, through the horrors of war to the communistic repression. It is the cry of a soul in torment, expressing grief, despair in a highly personal way, through irony or bitter truth. The symphonies span Shostakovich'whole life, and form a milestone in the symphonic repertoire. They are frequently played, and have gained nearly the same popularity as Mahler's symphonies. A great recording by Russian conductor Rudolf Barshai, an authority in this repertoire, as he has worked closely together with the composer for a long time, and premiered the 14th symphony.

Brilliant Classics is proud to have released a number of harpsichord music of the highest quality over the past few years. This collection brings these works together, as well as never before published recordings, allowing the listener to soak up the sounds of 17th- and 18th-century France in its most intimate, domestic setting.

The release starts with Jean Henri d’Anglebert, featuring four of his extensive suites. Each begins with a precisely notated prelude, followed by various dance movements of lively gigues and slow sarabandes. Anglebert’s complex ornamentation system was so admired that it would later be copied by J.S. Bach. Francesco Cera, described as ‘one of the most promising talents in Italy’, performs the works. Jacques Champion de Chambonnières comes next; known as the ‘founding father’ of the French harpsichord tradition, he worked in the courts of both Louis XIII and XIV as a dancer and musician. Franz Silvestri plays on a modern-day harpsichord after Vaudry, Chambonnières’ suites reflect the regal French court at its peak. Pieter-Jan Belder, whose recordings span keyboard music from across Europe during this period, chooses to put the spotlight on Le Roux, a shadowy figure about whom not much is known. He has left us with a beguiling set of harpsichord suites, unusually printed twice: once for one harpsichord and one as an alternative setting for two harpsichords.
