If you were looking at two shapes—specifically, a pointy, jagged polygon and an amoeboid-like splotch—which would you name "bouba," and which would you name "kiki"? In most scientific research, upwards of 90 percent of people will associate the pointy one with "kiki" and and the rounded one with "bouba." This worldwide phenomenon is known as the "Bouba-Kiki Effect" and has been recorded in many languages, and even with toddlers. Why most of us share the same tendency to link certain nonsensical visual and auditory stimuli isn't clear, but cognitive psychologists like Kelly McCormick have several compelling theories.

- Los Patos River -

About half an hour out of Barahona you will find Paradise. It's a small township hugging a mountainous coastline that truly lives up to its name. And just a few minutes beyond that, you will find the locality of Los Patos -- The Ducks.

The reason there is a township at all is the river Los Patos, or Duck River. I came here to find out why it was called Duck River and what is so special about it.

There is several things about this river that stand out. First of all, the name. While ducks do exist on the island, they are not exactly the most common fowl. You will find the odd domesticated duck, but truly wild ducks are rare. About a hundred years ago, that was different. You could find ducks all over the place and particularly in this river. However, ducks have one big problem: they are delicious.

By the 1980s the ducks were virtually extinct in the Duck River. Only the name remained. When I visited the river in the mid-2000s on my motorcycle tour of the island... Oh yeah, I'm now shamelessly plugging my old motorcycle show Rubberside Down... There were no ducks at all in the river. Thus for many the name made no sense. A duck river without ducks? That's just crazy.

But on my recent trip... They were back! Since the river has become a local tourist attraction, the local tourism board decided to bring in a few ducks, so the river could live up to its name. They’re now kept, fed and nobody is allowed to hunt them.

And because they are now completely tame, they will take advantage of you.

Another thing that makes this river unique is its length. With just 61 meters -- depending on the tide -- it is the shortest river on the island and among the shortest rivers in the world.

Finally there is its temperature, something all of the rivers and creeks in this area seem to have in common. It is unexpectedly freezing cold. With the uncomfortable heat in the area the icy cold river is a welcome change, but it's still a shock... A welcome shock. Bathing in water that had just come out of the ground a few seconds ago is an amazing experience. I can't prove it, but i suspect the water, being natural spring water, has mineral qualities. But who knows. Still, I felt like a kid again bathing in that water. Of course, it could just have been the cold temperature.

And as you would expect, with so much water running through and out of these hills, the hills are perforated with caves and chasms, all of which remain largely unexplored. But that's a different story.

So, if you come here, it will have to be on your own as you will be hard-pressed to find tours available. There are very few hotels in the area, and tourism is scarce. There is a good hotel right next to the river, but other than that, there is very little concerning accommodations. Also make sure to come during the week, as on the weekends it gets very full here with local tourists. It would seem the area is an italian secret, as you will find a lot of italian tourists here, but only the adventurous kind. There is no large scale tourism infrastructure in place and for now Duck River with its ducks and natural spring water is an off-the-beaten-track secret.

And let's keep it that way.

Composer & Artist:
Composer: Johann Wilhelm Hässler
Artists: Michele Benuzzi (harpsichord)

About this Album:
Johann Wilhelm Hässler’s keyboard works occupy a fascinating position in the history of music. Although the composer was a harpsichord virtuoso in the late 18th century, just as his instrument was beginning to fall out of favour with composers and performers as the piano increased in popularity, Hässler’s music was not hopelessly old-fashioned. He was a successful pianist and organist, and a great admirer of C.P.E. Bach who he had met several times. He undertook many concert tours throughout Europe, and was able to publish a large quantity of music during his lifetime. The works heard in this collection can, in fact, be understood as a bridge between the Baroque composers who preceded him and the Classical and early-Romantic era that followed, drawing on a range of contrasting styles to create music of great drama, complexity and even theatricality.

The music heard on this new recording is particularly rare; it is found only in anonymous manuscripts and has previously been misattributed to W.F. Bach. As such, Michele Benuzzi’s thoroughly researched performances are an excellent opportunity to hear repertoire that will be unfamiliar to many listeners.

The late 17th century was a golden age for the proliferation of organ music in Northern Germany. While J.S. Bach – alongside Buxtehude – may be the first name to come to mind when we consider composers of this period, more provincial towns were also surprisingly rich centres of music-making. The Husumer Orgelbuch of 1758 comprises a collection of works for organ from Husum, a coastal town situated at the tip of Germany. Organist Bendix Friedrich Zinck, whose life spanned the second half of the 18th century, chose 17 compositions for the organ to include in the collection, mostly made up of parts of old compositions. We have one example of an Adagio by Nicolaus Bruhns, also known to be active in Husum, though many years before Bendix. A more substantial body has survived of music by Druckenmüller, an almost exact contemporary of J.S. Bach. His compositions for organ are some of the first examples of the ‘Italian concerto’ style in northern Germany, a concerto with three movements (fast-slow-fast) resembling the Italian concerto grosso. Another remarkable feature of this manuscript is the fact that a vast majority of the works are original compositions rather than transcriptions – a novelty for organ music at this time, which more often involved arrangements of orchestral works, such as Bach’s transcriptions of Vivaldi or Walther’s of Torelli.

Italian organist Manuel Tomadin is an enthusiastic advocate of music of this period, having recently released a CD of the complete organ works of Druckenmüller alongside Daniel Erich and Georg Wilhelm Dietrich Saxer on Brilliant Classics. As always, he has carefully selected his performing instruments, choosing a Baroque organ by Arp Schnitger – the most important organ builder of this period, who worked closely with Druckenmüller – and an organ by Albertus Hinsz in Leens, one of the closest to the tradition of Schnitger. For lovers of Baroque organ music looking to explore outside the established canon of Bach, Buxtehude and Walther, this release represents an exciting opportunity to discover some of the wealth of music-making in Northern Germany during this period.

Erik Satie (1866-1925) was without doubt one of great ‘one offs’in musical history. Impossible to categorise, he composed around 100 works, which include film scores, ballets, melodies and above all piano works. A friend of Debussy, Ravel, Cocteau,Picasso and Diaghalev, he was at the core of the avant garde in Paris, and yet he remained an outsider – deliberately so.

Happy playing piano in jazz bars – where he and Debussy met each other, Satie was the antithesis of the late 19th century and early 20th musical world as dominated by Wagner and his adherents. The master of Bayreuth had proclaimed himself the prophet of ‘music of the future’and his vast opulently scored music dramas cast their spell over the Second Viennese school, and also Debussy, whose opera Pelléas et Melisande has a good deal of Parsifal and Tristan in its score. With Satie, it was the music of the past that was important, and he even returned to the tones of the ancient Greeks. Gymnopédies evokes the dance of children from ancient Sparta, who danced in honour of Apollo. Similarly, Gnossiennes is from the labyrinth at Knossos (Gnossos). It wasn’t all ancient Greek influences though that guided Satie’s inspiration – jazz and the music hall were potent influences

Perhaps the most idiosyncratic work he composed is Vexations. He composed it in 1893, but refused to show the score to anyone, and the premiere took place in 1963 at the instigation of John Cage. The score occupies a single page, headed ‘Page Mystique. To play this motif 840 times in succession, it will be necessary to prepare oneself in advance, in total silence, by remaining absolutely motionless.’ A complete performance thus takes 18–30 hours. Cristina Ariagno plays an excerpt.

Alfred Brendel’s first recorded cycle of the complete works for piano of Beethoven appeared in the 1960s on the Vox label. They established his reputation as a leading interpreter of the composer, and although he returned to the studio subsequently to re-record the sonatas and concertos for Philips, these early recordings have retained their freshness and originality. For many record collectors, the budget price Turnabout label provided a happy hunting ground for those who sought out unusual repertoire. The parent company Vox also had the vision to ask the relatively unknown Brendel to undertake the huge project of recording all the Beethoven Sonatas, Variations and Piano Concertos. These recordings document the artist as a young man at the outset of his extraordinary journey, and in repertoire that will always be closely associated with him. They also stand comparison with his later interpretations of Beethoven.

For his 2018 Physics Slam presentation at Fermilab, Northwestern University scientist André de Gouvêa took on one of the most fascinating particles in physics: the neutrino. In 10 minutes, he explained—with the help of a few props—what neutrinos are and how physicists discovered that these particles can transform into one other, a phenomenon known as neutrino oscillation. At the end of the evening, the audience declared him to be the winner of the 2018 Physics Slam.
