Alfred Brendel’s first recorded cycle of the complete works for piano of Beethoven appeared in the 1960s on the Vox label. They established his reputation as a leading interpreter of the composer, and although he returned to the studio subsequently to re-record the sonatas and concertos for Philips, these early recordings have retained their freshness and originality. For many record collectors, the budget price Turnabout label provided a happy hunting ground for those who sought out unusual repertoire. The parent company Vox also had the vision to ask the relatively unknown Brendel to undertake the huge project of recording all the Beethoven Sonatas, Variations and Piano Concertos. These recordings document the artist as a young man at the outset of his extraordinary journey, and in repertoire that will always be closely associated with him. They also stand comparison with his later interpretations of Beethoven.

Composer & Artist:
Composer: Michel Corrette
Artists: La Fantasia ensemble, Rien Voskuilen (organ and concert master)

About this Album:
Michel Corrette (1709–1795) was born in Rouen, where his father Gaspard was an organist. Sadly, little is known about his early life, but we know he held positions as organist in several churches in Paris. For many years his reputation rested on his teaching methods and educational works, and he can claim to have written and published more teaching methods than any other composer. These include works on the mandolin, guitar, violin, cello, viola da gamba, organ, harpsichord, double bass and harp. Today, these books are of interest as they throw light upon the ‘Italian’ style that was all the rage in France in the early 18th century. The proceeds of all these successful books meant that Corrette became relatively well off, which aroused feelings of envy among his contemporaries, who often made sure that his music received lukewarm reviews.

On this release of Les Six Symphonies de Noël, we hear Corrette writing in a style firmly rooted in the Baroque, but the inclusion of ‘foreign’ material such as the tune from Poland and from North America show the innovative and truly creative side of the composer. Noëls were extremely popular in France, and many were intended for organ alone, though Corrette stipulates that his can be performed within an orchestral setting. He probably meant by this that the organ and a small string ensemble would be the ideal forces.

This release presents works of Chopin written in his Vienna period, and here they are played on exactly such an instrument, as is still preserved in the Italian Palazzo Contucci in Montepulciano.
The young Chopin, a child prodigy if ever there was one, soon found his surroundings in his native Warsaw too narrow, and visited the cultural capital Vienna during the years 1829-1831. Here he met the local piano manufacturer Conrad Graf and was seduced by his instruments, with their light action and delicate, pliant sound.

His triumphal concerts in Vienna were played on Graf’s pianos, and the young Fryderick was presented one as a gift by Graf himself.

Other information:
- The extensive booklet supplies historical background, pictures, illustrations and photos.
- Costantino Mastroprimiano has already recorded extensively for Brilliant Classics: the complete keyboard music of Clementi highly praised by international critics.

For a collection of small nations at the northern fringe of Europe, Scandinavia produced in a relatively short space of time a remarkable quantity of great musicians – including from the late classical and early periods Berwald, Pacius and Crusell, to Gade, Svendsen ,Sinding and Grieg in the mid 19th, and of course Sibelius, Nielsen, Laangaard and Stenhammer at the end of the 19th who became major international composers in the first three decades of the 20th century.

Edvard Grieg (1843 - 1907) of course will always be remembered as the composer of the highly effective A minor piano concerto, and his incidental music to Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt. However, it is as a miniaturist that Greig’s true genius lies. Grieg was a very capable pianist, and had in fact made his early career as a concert pianist, and his songs and solo piano music form the heart of his output. The early piano sonata although interesting shows clearly why the less restricting forms of the miniatures for solo piano suited his genius. The Lyric Pieces and Peasant Dances display his keen ear for traditional folk music, matched probably only by Bartok and Kodaly.

The 66 works that comprise the 10 books of Lyric Pieces date from 1867 to 1901, and are extraordinary, exquisitely crafted works that can stand comparison to any of the great sonatas of his contemporaries. This set includes the complete Lyric Pieces, the Sonata, The Holberg Suite and the lesser-known piano works of this great composer who captured the very essence of his native Norway in music.

To relax. To disconnect from the tentacles of 24/7 technology. To truly unplug. It’s become more than a goal. It’s become a necessity. And, it’s become more difficult than ever to do, especially when we sleep. Essential to one’s complete physical, emotion and mental health, the deeper and more tranquil sleep, the better. The answer to those better nights lies with music.

Think of the baby and the lullaby; how the gentle sounds, almost instinctively, hypnotically induce a calming, soothing state ideal for sleeping. Slower rhythms with soft sonic edges, played at a consistent volume, encourage deep relaxation, blocking out distractions, and helping the body to quickly find and maintain its natural sleep rhythm. Music is the medicine.

Chronic sleep problems can be physically draining, and turn what should be hours of blissful escape into anxiety-ridden nightly recurrences. Set aside the daily grind and unwind with music designed specifically to promote soothing dream states, and provide more rejuvenation in the morning. Not to mention the proven benefits of lower heart rate and lower blood pressure, reduced insomnia, and increased energy the next day.

It’s time to fall asleep faster, wake-up less, and feel more rested in the morning. It’s time for Music For Sleep.

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is one of the world’s most popular and widely recorded collections of music, a set that instantly became an international hit after it was first published at part of the composer’s Op.8 in 1725. No doubt it was its imitative directness – extra musical occurrences/phenomena evoked in an extremely suggestive manner and even written into the score, such as ‘the barking dog’ or ‘the drunkards’ sleep’ etc. – that caused such as sensation in its time, effortlessly bridging the gap between the salons of the highborn and the alehouses of the lowly. Today nothing has changed: the concertos are performed both by great violin virtuosos and famous hard rockers; they are works that are constantly being presented in new guises through the re-imagining and re-working of the musical score.

Such is the standpoint adopted on this recording by Erik Bosgraaf, who has chosen here to adapt the violin part for recorder, explaining how ‘the violin part can be played on the recorder with surprising ease, without many changes. In some ways it works even better than concertos Vivaldi wrote specifically for the recorder!’ Years ago Bosgraaf performed The Four Seasons with a symphony orchestra; for the present album, however, he wanted to approach his ideal as closely as possible using Cordevento, a small baroque ensemble he founded himself, knowing all the musicians through and through. Bosgraaf’s aim is to make the four legendary concertos sound as if they had been written for the recorder in the first place – and the results are laudable, with the contrasts between the wind instrument and the accompanying strings revealing previously unheard stratifications and details. As the soloist himself puts it, ‘Listen to Vivaldi with fresh ears and enjoy!’

Erik Bosgraaf is considered one of the most innovative and versatile recorder players of his generation. His concerts are happenings, and offer fascinating combinations of classical and experimental music. His importance for the emancipation of the recorder (still often considered a stuffy and even childish instrument) is enormous. Bosgraaf’s version of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons (of course originally for violin and orchestra) is not a mere transcription for another instrument, but a recreation of a work of startling originality and power: listen to the furioso rendering of the Summer Storm!

About this Album:
Izhar Elias has produced several successful and imaginative albums for Brilliant Classics. None of them have confirmed to a ‘Spanish guitar’ stereotype but all have engaged in various original ways with the developing heritage of the instrument during the 19th century, from ‘Paisiello in Vienna’ (BC95301) to ‘Beethoven and the Guitar’ (BC94631) to Giuliani’s astonishing transcription of Rossini’s grand tragedy Semiramide (BC93902).

His latest recording brings the classical guitar up to date with works by composers from four different countries; within them may be heard influences from classical music, avant-garde, Caribbean music, Spanish folklore, flamenco, Arabic music, blues, Argentinean tango and even trip-hop and heavy metal: provocative testament to the world’s most versatile instrument. The Guernica Suite by Pujol (b.1959) focuses on different aspects of Picasso’s painting in six movements, with a tentatively positive conclusion.

The Triptych of Roberto Sierra (b.1953) evokes some nocturnal sounds from his native Puerto Rico, including the tropical tree frog as well as a night on the tiles. The three Danzas Concertantes pulse and glide with the rhythms of Leo Brouwer’s native Cuba, offset by some astringent harmonies that place the guitar’s usual role as purveyor of folkloristic colour under threat. Finally there is the Schattenspiel Suite by Florian Magnus Maier (b.1973), who also plays electric Moog guitar on this recording. Maier pursues a diverse career as a composer, guitarist and vocalist with bands including Alkaloid, Dark Fortress and Noneuclid; this tripartite suite inspired by shadows is his best-known work in the classical tradition, and for this recording he has made a new arrangement for two guitars and string quartet. There is something for everyone on this album: it’s essential listening for guitar-music enthusiasts who want to broaden their horizons.

For this exciting new recording Dutch guitarist Izhar Elias selected 4 works for guitar and strings to show the versatility of his instrument. In these works by Brouwer, Pujol , Sierra and Maier influences can be traced from classical music, Avant-Garde, Caribbean music, Spanish folklore, Flamenco, Arabic music, tango, blues and even trip-hop and heavy metal: fascinating!
Izhar Elias secured the collaboration of world-class musicians (composer Florian Magnus Maier plays the Moog electric guitar), each bringing a different musical background and an open mind.
In the booklet text each composer comments on his own work, a better introduction is hardly possible.

Bartok’s assessment of Zoltán Kodály’s music as “the most perfect embodiment of the Hungarian spirit” will strike a chord with those familiar with the suite from his opera Háry János, the Dances of Galanta or indeed the works for cello which moved the instrument on from the Romantic idiom of Brahms, and at the same time looked backwards to the dancing elegance of Bach’s solo Suites.

He had taught himself to play the cello to a reasonable standard (also the violin and viola) and while, as he freely admitted, not a natural virtuoso, he had a feeling for the instrument which is obvious in his writing. The Adagio was his first published work, dating from 1905 and originally written for violin and piano: still broadly Romantic in idiom, and unaffected as yet by his work in collecting folk songs from the countries of south-eastern Europe which would decisively influence his mature idiom.

- Los Patos River -

About half an hour out of Barahona you will find Paradise. It's a small township hugging a mountainous coastline that truly lives up to its name. And just a few minutes beyond that, you will find the locality of Los Patos -- The Ducks.

The reason there is a township at all is the river Los Patos, or Duck River. I came here to find out why it was called Duck River and what is so special about it.

There is several things about this river that stand out. First of all, the name. While ducks do exist on the island, they are not exactly the most common fowl. You will find the odd domesticated duck, but truly wild ducks are rare. About a hundred years ago, that was different. You could find ducks all over the place and particularly in this river. However, ducks have one big problem: they are delicious.

By the 1980s the ducks were virtually extinct in the Duck River. Only the name remained. When I visited the river in the mid-2000s on my motorcycle tour of the island... Oh yeah, I'm now shamelessly plugging my old motorcycle show Rubberside Down... There were no ducks at all in the river. Thus for many the name made no sense. A duck river without ducks? That's just crazy.

But on my recent trip... They were back! Since the river has become a local tourist attraction, the local tourism board decided to bring in a few ducks, so the river could live up to its name. They’re now kept, fed and nobody is allowed to hunt them.

And because they are now completely tame, they will take advantage of you.

Another thing that makes this river unique is its length. With just 61 meters -- depending on the tide -- it is the shortest river on the island and among the shortest rivers in the world.

Finally there is its temperature, something all of the rivers and creeks in this area seem to have in common. It is unexpectedly freezing cold. With the uncomfortable heat in the area the icy cold river is a welcome change, but it's still a shock... A welcome shock. Bathing in water that had just come out of the ground a few seconds ago is an amazing experience. I can't prove it, but i suspect the water, being natural spring water, has mineral qualities. But who knows. Still, I felt like a kid again bathing in that water. Of course, it could just have been the cold temperature.

And as you would expect, with so much water running through and out of these hills, the hills are perforated with caves and chasms, all of which remain largely unexplored. But that's a different story.

So, if you come here, it will have to be on your own as you will be hard-pressed to find tours available. There are very few hotels in the area, and tourism is scarce. There is a good hotel right next to the river, but other than that, there is very little concerning accommodations. Also make sure to come during the week, as on the weekends it gets very full here with local tourists. It would seem the area is an italian secret, as you will find a lot of italian tourists here, but only the adventurous kind. There is no large scale tourism infrastructure in place and for now Duck River with its ducks and natural spring water is an off-the-beaten-track secret.

And let's keep it that way.

About this Album:
On this varied and atmospheric album, accomplished guitarist Flávio Apro selects pieces from nine different composers, all representative of the evolution of classical Brazilian guitar music over the course of the late-19th and 20th centuries. What connects many of these luminaries is their ability to bring European dance forms into their musical world and then to mould them into something different by injecting elements of Brazilian musical tradition. Particularly striking examples of this are João Pernambuco, whose Sons de Carrilhões incorporates elements of European polka, yet embellished with rhythmic and harmonic repetitions that conjure up numerous surprises for the listener; and Egberto Gismonti, whose work fuses traditional Brazilian genres with elements of jazz, classical, world and contemporary music.

Meanwhile, other composers from this collection push the envelope of guitar composition in different ways. Leo Brouwer’s challenging, four-part Sonata del Caminante travels through waves of landscape-evoking intensity, via extremes of tempo, dynamics and scope; while Rafael Altro’s Homenagem is a true test of the performer’s dexterity and skill.

Sound waves in a tube of gas create flames of different heights that dance to the music. A metal tube with holes in it is filled with gas. The gas is lit to create a row of tiny flames. A speaker at one end plays sound into the tube, which creates a standing wave of sound: areas where air molecules are vibrating rapidly separated by areas where the air is fairly still. This produces the different heights of flames and allows the wavelength of the sound wave to be estimated.

To celebrate the announcement of the discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs Boson at the LHC, I took to the streets with Vi Hart to give out free Higgs. Now giving out a subatomic particle, especially the Higgs, would have been incredibly difficult so instead we gave out hand-drawn cards of the Standard Model, our current best theory of all matter particles in the universe and their iteractions (now with Higgs!). We also offered a hug with an integer spin, usually 1 or 2 (and in rare cases 0). This is a way of showing others that you care about the Higgs Boson.
