A recording of the complete Cello Sonatas by Vivaldi on period instruments! Antonio Vivaldi was one of the first composers to feature the cello, then a relatively “new” instrument (after the viola da gamba), as a mature solo instrument. This full recording contains the complete 6 sonatas for cello and basso continuo.

Vivaldi displays an astonishing variety and inventiveness in these sonatas, using the instrument’s possibilities to the utmost; these sonatas still offer a serious challenge, both technical and musical, for any professional cellist nowadays. Apart from that they are vintage Vivaldi, featuring an enormous range of emotional extremes, from deep heartfelt sadness to infectious joy.

A ‘scherzo’ may be a joke, but Chopin’s Scherzi are not to be laughed at: indeed, they are highly virtuosic and require
performers with the utmost skill. Within their complexity, though, is hidden some of the most sensitive and tender music Chopin ever composed. On hearing his Scherzo in B flat minor Op.31, Robert Schumann felt compelled to compare it to the romantic poems of Byron, as it seemed to overflow with passion and feeling. The Scherzo in B minor Op.20, marked ‘Presto con fuoco’, starts at tremendous speed, and climaxes in astonishingly virtuosic arpeggios that span almost the entire length of the keyboard, ending in a minor plagal cadence that seems to sum up the dark despair the piece encapsulates. More light‐ hearted but equally complex are Chopin’s Études and Mazurkas, which he performed himself to great acclaim. It was
Schumann, again, who praised Chopin’s skilful playing, marvelling at his capacity to bring out the inner voices just as clearly as
the melody. At a time when other composers were turning towards large‐scale orchestral works, Chopin knew his strengths
lay with his solo compositions for piano: his Waltzes, Scherzi, Mazurkas and Études still rank among the most performed and
beloved solo piano works today. This release illustrates why Chopin deserves his reputation as supreme composer for the
piano, featuring as it does his most dramatic works for the instrument. Czech pianist Ivan Moravec, whose recording career spans almost half a century, entered the classical music scene in America with aplomb thanks to his performances of Chopin’s Scherzi in 1962. This recording was made in 1989 at the world famous Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in New York State, which boasts one of the finest acoustics in the US. Playing on a Steinway Model D that had to be brought through the window especially for the performance, Moravec sparkles on this recording, as he illustrates why his reputation as a world class pianist is truly deserved.

This release presents one of the best recordings of the 4 Scherzi by Chopin, as played by Ivan Moravec.
Moravec recorded this Chopin recital in 1989 in the USA. Moravec is a “pianist’s pianist”, someone who combines deep intellectual musicality, passion and a superb command of keyboard. He is counted among today’s greatest living pianists, respected and admired by audiences all over the world. Featuring the 4 Scherzi, and a selection of Mazurkas and Etudes.

Composer & Artists:
Composer: Carl Friedrich Abel
Artists: Georgia Browne (flute), Nordic Affect ensemble

About this Album:
Although Carl Friedrich Abel (1723–87) is known as one of the last and greatest virtuosos of the viola da gamba, his instrument declined in popularity towards the end of the 18th century, leading him to compose for other instruments; some of his most successful results can be heard in the music recorded on this disc.

Abel’s ability to compose particularly fine music for the flute can be traced back his time working at the Dresden court, which possessed one of the greatest orchestras of the era. Among the musicians working there were the flautists Buffardin and Quantz – the latter a prolific composer of flute concertos and sonatas for Frederick the Great, a notable patron of the arts. It is likely that Abel himself was a skilled flautist, and the instrument’s popularity at the time created a great demand for new compositions.

The works featured on this disc are less well known than Abel’s music for viola da gamba, and are performed less often. However, they provide an insight into 18th century music’s transition from Baroque complexity to the melody-driven Classical style, and are illuminated through performances by flute soloist Georgia Browne and the ensemble Nordic Affect, specialists in historical performance.

About this Album:
Brahms had already declared to his long-suffering publisher Simrock that he was done with the business of composition before producing these, his final pieces of chamber music. He was inspired by the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld, a player in the court orchestra of Meiningen, where Hans von Bülow conducted the composer’s music including all the symphonies. Mühlfeld’s breath control and superb melodic sensitivity evidently reawakened in the composer the long-breathed melodies which mark out his chamber music throughout his career, but Brahms soon declared that the sonatas could just as well be played on the viola, perhaps with one eye on his royalties from Simrock, but violists have been glad to seize on their ‘own’ Brahms ever since.
Melancholy is perhaps inevitably the major key of both sonatas – Brahms had been drawn to express autumnal loneliness even 40 years before – but they are not gloomy works, and are built with undimmed ingenuity as masterfully organic structures in which the usual contrast of first and second themes is forsaken for the kind of continuous variation which Arnold Schoenberg could justly and admiringly describe as ‘musical prose’.

Composer: Friedrich Kuhlau
Artist: Giorgio Leonida Tosi baroque (violin), Paolo Porto (piano), Ileana Frontini (piano)

Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832) was born in Hannover, but as a student he went to Denmark, where he stayed the rest of his life, becoming an important national composer.
Kuhlau was a near contemporary of Beethoven, and his style shares elements of that genius (alas not the genius…): rooted in the 17th century classicism it foreshadows the Romantic movement in a true expression of affect, daring dissonances and sudden harmonic changes, and a general expression of romantic moods as favoured in the fashionable salons.
Kuhlau is nowadays best known for his Sonatinas for amateur pianists, serving as a welcome alternative to the more classical sonatinas by Clementi.
This new recording present Kuhlau’s Violin Sonatas Op. 79, music of considerable drama, brilliance and virtuosity, but also of gentle lyricism and charm.
As interludes to these sonatas the piano duo Porto-Frontini plays two works for piano 4-hands, an Allegro Pathétique and an Adagio & Rondo.

Most of his chamber music features the flute, a commercially astute selection given the popularity of the instrument among amateur musicians at the time, even though Kuhlau was no flautist himself. There are, however, three piano quartets, a late string quartet closely modelled on Beethoven’s Op.132, and four violin sonatas. This Op.79 set was composed as a trio in Copenhagen in 1826, the year after he got drunk on champagne one evening with Beethoven, who wrote a canon at the time and sent it along later with a mock-apology: ‘In this case, I haven’t the slightest memory of what I wrote yesterday… Think of me now and again, your devoted Beethoven.’

All three sonatas are melodically fresh, dramatically imposing works that should not stand too shyly in the shadow of Beethoven’s contributions to the genre: the first and third are largely extrovert, whereas the second is thoughtful and intimate in character. The sonatas are juxtaposed here with late and brilliant works for piano four-hands which may reveal the influence of Schubert, so unconventional is their form, so bold the evocation of Romantic sonorities on the keyboard: on this album of historically informed performances by young Italian musicians, the instrument used is a Stein piano of Viennese manufacture, dating from 1830.

Played by Giorgio Leonida Tosi on a baroque violin, pianist Paolo Porto plays an 1830 Viennese Stein piano.

About this Album:
The sonatas presented in this recording, labelled as Sonate à Violino e Viola in the autograph score at the Biblioteca Musicale Greggiati in Ostiglia and as Sonate Per Violin solo con accompagnamento di Viola in the parts at the Salzburg Museum, are likely to date back to the very beginning of Gatti’s stay in Salzburg. The autograph is written on paper whose watermarks suggest a date of about 1783. If so, the works were probably commissioned by archbishop Colloredo, for whom a similar cycle of six sonatas was composed in the same year by Michael Haydn, MH 335–38, and W. A. Mozart, K 423–24. (Another set of six by Joseph Hafeneder in the Toggenburg Collection of Bolzano, minus the first sonata, may share the same origin). In which case, the violin part was probably intended for Colloredo himself, a “good performer on the violin” according to Charles Burney. The archbishop was also said to “enjoy performing on the violin, which he played very well” and to be in the habit of “mingling with the court musicians and playing the violin with them” before dinner.

Composer & Artist:
Composers: Antonín Dvorák, Bedrich Smetana, Bohuslav Martinu, Leoš Janácek
Artists: Stamitz Quartet, Bohuslav Matoušek (first violin), Josef Kekula (second violin), Jan Peruška (viola), Vladimír Leixner (cello)

About this Album:
Those by Dvořák chart the evolution of his style, from his interest in Wagnerian music in the years prior to 1870 – String Quartet in D major – to the folk-infused works of his later life, such as the String Quartet in G major Op.106, and show the influence of his time in the United States, with the String Quartet in F Op.96 ‘American’. The quartets of Smetana have a distinctive neo-classical flavour while those of Janáček show strong links to his operatic works. Prolific composer Bohuslav Martinů composed six quartets, of which two were mislaid during the war. One of these, his fifth string quartet, is widely considered to be one of the most pivotal works in the composer’s oeuvre, written in 1938, a year of much upheaval in Martinů’s life. Many of the quartets in the collection hold an emotional dimension, all of which are exquisitely brought to life by the Stamitz Quartet.

Established in 1985, the Stamitz Quartet quickly became known as leading interpreters of Czech repertory. Winners of the 1986 National Broadcasting Union Competition in Salzburg, the Quartet’s rise to fame was meteoric; they have since participated in tours throughout Europe and America and undertaken a variety of recording projects, of which this collection is one.

The Veracini who wrote these playful and virtuosic trio sonatas is not Francesco Maria but his uncle, Antonio. The nephew’s work is relatively well-known, including an Op.1 set of twelve sonatas which has already received a recording on Brilliant Classics (BC93809) by Enrico Casazza and La Magnifica Comunita. Antonio was also born and raised a Florentine, taught by his father and in time director of the school of music which Veracini pere had founded. This duty was the likely obstacle to his forging an international career, despite promising and well-received visits to Rome and Vienna.

Composer: Egidio Romualdo Duni
Artist: Accademia d'Arcadia, Roberto Balconi director, Agnieszka Budzińska-Bennet soprano, Maciej Straburzyński baritone, Łukasz Wilda tenor

Les deux chasseurs et la laitière (The two hunters and the milkmaid) is an opéra-comique first performed at the Théâtre Italien in July 1763, and repeated many times there as well as attracting stagings across Europe for the following half-century, when the fashion for such light entertainment was supplanted by younger and better-known contemporaries from Mozart to Rossini.

The composer in this case is Egidio Romualdo Duni (1708-1775), originally educated within the Neapolitan school of composers. As a court composer in Parma he produced several Italian operas such as Olimpiade and La buona figliola, still awaiting modern revival. His move to Paris in 1757 proved decisive, and four years later he became music director of the Théâtre Italien, where he produced many light operas such as this example, which is as unfailingly charming and humorous as it is now little known.

Composer & Artist:
Composer: Henri Sauguet
Artists: Alfonso Baschiera (guitar), Federica Lotti (flute), Nicola Boscaro (cello)

About this Album:
Henri Sauguet composed for many solo instruments, but writing for the guitar was where his passion lay, describing the instrument as ‘very noble’ and ‘one of the great instruments that belong to all ages’. An eclectic, prolific and original composer, Sauguet’s great gift lay in his ability to construct with just a few notes sound sketches that transcend genres, taking inspiration from a wide pool of trends. Sauguet began composing music for the guitar in 1958 with Soliloque, a vibrant, emotionally charged piece in which tonality and modality intermingle with chromaticism, and continued with the elegant harmonic solutions of Trois Préludes in 1970 and the subtle and expressive neo-modality of Musiques pour Claudel in 1973. These two suites, written to celebrate the French writer Paul Claudel, were followed by Six Pièces faciles in 1975, which was more frivolous in nature but nevertheless evocative, with memorable melodic themes. The crowning note in his guitar music writing career came with Révérence à Johann Sebastian Bach, written in 1985 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the great German composer’s birth, and Cadence, his final piece for the solo guitar written at the age of 84 and published posthumously in 1990, containing two distinct sections that intertwine, the first part mechanical and regular, the second contemplative and lyrical.

Bartok’s assessment of Zoltán Kodály’s music as “the most perfect embodiment of the Hungarian spirit” will strike a chord with those familiar with the suite from his opera Háry János, the Dances of Galanta or indeed the works for cello which moved the instrument on from the Romantic idiom of Brahms, and at the same time looked backwards to the dancing elegance of Bach’s solo Suites.

He had taught himself to play the cello to a reasonable standard (also the violin and viola) and while, as he freely admitted, not a natural virtuoso, he had a feeling for the instrument which is obvious in his writing. The Adagio was his first published work, dating from 1905 and originally written for violin and piano: still broadly Romantic in idiom, and unaffected as yet by his work in collecting folk songs from the countries of south-eastern Europe which would decisively influence his mature idiom.

Composer: Arthur Foote
Artist: Artem Belogurov piano

A unique collection of American romantic piano music, written largely in the last third of the 19th century, by Foote, Whiting, Paine, Chadwick and Nevin. In a period where in Europe piano music was in the hands of towering virtuosos like Liszt, Anton Rubinstein and later Rachmaninoff, the American scene was notably less tormented, focusing on tone painting idyllic landscapes, rural scenes and charming dance forms.
These genre pieces share the same delightful characteristics as their European pendants by Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Grieg, Gade, Sinding and others.

Composer & Artist:
Composer: Christoph Nichelmann
Artist: Michele Benuzzi

About this Album:
When calling to mind harpsichord music of the Baroque period, the 24 Preludes and Fugues of J.S. Bach or the Pièces de clavecin by Couperin are perhaps the most immediately obvious choices. However, the music of Christoph Nichelmann (who is said to have studied with Bach) is equally inspired, and this release is the first step towards a more substantial recording of his oeuvre – indeed, it is the first recording solely dedicated to his output. One of a large number of composers whose music faded into obscurity after their death, Nichelmann is at last attracting the scholarly attention he deserves, largely thanks to today's vogue for discovering and promoting lesser-known repertoire.

This recording brings together the two sets of six sonatas from the middle of Nichelmann’s life, printed in 1745, and which represent the only two surviving collections of his music. The style of his compositions is intriguing and eclectic: on the one hand we can still hear the heritage of Baroque music, and on the other the development of a more sensitive and expressive language – although not quite the bridge to the Classicism which we hear in the music of Bach’s son, Carl Philipp Emanuel.

Composer: Benjamin Britten
Artists: Rundfunkchor Leipzig, Dresdner Philharmonie , Herbert Kegel (conductor), Kari Lövaas (soprano), Anthony Roden (tenor), Theo Adam (bass-baritone)

About this Album:
The common theme of the three works presented on these 2 CD is Death, the transience of earthly existence. Britten’s famous and substantial War Requiem was written in commemoration of the 2nd World War victims, dedicated to the people of the destroyed city of Coventry, Penderecki’s Threnody is dedicated to the victims of Hiroshima, and Alban Berg’s moving Violin Concerto is written “to the memory of an angel”, the death of the 19 year old daughter of Alma Mahler.
Performances conducted by the great East-German conductor Herbert Kegel, a specialist in 20th century masterworks. He conducts the Dresdner Philharmonie and the Leipzig Radio-Sinfonieorchester, soloists include the great Kari Lövaas and Theo Adam.
A reissue from the rich archives of Berlin Classics, treasures from the DDR.

This young guitarist’s debut album is the perfect introduction to his artistry, showcasing as it does four leading 20th-century composers of guitar music – Antonio José Palacios, Alberto Ginastera, Antonio Lauro and Julio Gentil Montaña – composers who in turn represent four different countries and four styles of music that differ widely both aesthetically and in terms of the traditions from which they spring.

Composer: Alberto Ginastera, Julio Gentil Montana
Artist: Deion Cho guitar

Among the most promising Spanish composers of his generation, Antonio José was acclaimed by Ravel and counted Lorca and Dali among his associates, but like Lorca, he was executed by a Falangist firing squad during the Spanish Civil War. Only 34 years of age, he had accumulated a catalogue of music impressive not only for its depth but its sophistication, exemplified by the substantial Guitar Sonata which is his best-known work. The Sonata by the Argentine Alberto Ginastera is no less imposing in structure, and harmonically much more adventurous than José’s bluesy neo-classicism. The four Venezuelan waltzes by Antonio Lauro are brief and charming early works, the first three dedicated to his daughter and two nieces, the last named Yacambú after an orchid-rich national park in the northern Andes. The first movement of the fourth Colombian Suite by Julio Gentil Montaña (1942-2011) is likewise named after that country’s capital, Bogotà, and it is followed by three interpretations of national dances, concluding with a snappy Porro.

The 23-year-old Deion Cho is of South Korean origin, currently studying and working in Spain. He has given the album his signature with an arrangement of a popular Korean folksong, ‘About 500 Years’, clearly inflected by his years of work in Hispanic and Iberian music.
