After releasing the highly successful sets of Shostakovich symphonies (the award-winning cycle of Rudolf Barshai) and the string quartets ( highly acclaimed performances of the Rubio Quartet), this set presents the Jazz Suites, Ballet Suites and Film Music.

Shostakovich lived a live full of tension and controverses in the Stalin era. As a modernist he was reprimanded and threatened to be banned. As a sign of good behaviour, he wrote music for mass audiences, in a popular style. But Shostakovich being Shostakovich, he managed to suggest under the surface of the sometimes nearly vulgar music his unique sense of bitter irony and revolt.

The Jazz suites enjoy a huge popularity. The 'Second Waltz' from the first Suite gained world reputation through the arrangement of Andre Rieu. The film music for the Gadfly is famous for its Romance, which was used in a popular television series.

Excellent, idiomatic performances by the Ukrainian Orchestra under Theodore Kuchar.

El director del Grupo ACI, Alejandro Bermúdez, nos ofrece a diario reflexiones en audio y vídeo sobre temas de actualidad en los que los católicos necesitamos tener una posición clara e informada. Compártelo con tus amigos, tu comunidad o en tu medio de comunicación católico.

Las monjas cistercienses de la Abadía de Boulaur en Francia lanzaron un ambicioso proyecto. Con el nombre de “Granja 21” buscan renovar su histórico monasterio del siglo XII. El proyecto que cuenta con 45 hectáreas incluye un establo de animales para Navidad, así como un taller para hacer quesos, mermeladas, patés y harina.
Una de las metas es generar puestos de trabajo y alentar el comercio en la región, generando un espacio que sea más atractivo para la cultura y el turismo. Las 27 religiosas de la abadía tienen una edad promedio de 45 años. El proyecto requiere una fuerte inversión que permita alentar el desarrollo local. En este vídeo, el científico e investigador JM Mulet aclara uno de los mitos más extendidos sobre nutrición infantil y azúcar. ¿Es necesario un aumento en el consumo de glucosa para estudiar? No. Porque el metabolismo sirve para mantener el equilibrio y cerebro extrae la glucosa que necesita de una alimentación saludable y equilibrada. Tampoco es cierto que los sustitutos del azúcar aparentemente más saludables -como la miel o panela- ayuden a controlar el sobrepeso.

“No debemos demonizar el azúcar, pero su consumo ha aumentado en los últimos años. Y el problema no está en quitar una cucharita de azúcar que tomamos con el café, sino en la cantidad excesiva de azúcar que contienen los productos hiperprocesados o refrescos”, señala el científico.

Barbara Oakley is a Professor of Engineering at Oakland University in Rochester, the Ramón y Cajal Distinguished Scholar of Global Digital Learning at McMaster University; and Coursera’s inaugural “Innovation Instructor”. Together with Terrence Sejnowski, she co-directs Coursera’s “Learning How to Learn”, the world’s most popular massive open online course, at UC San Diego.

In the following video, Oakley gives us the keys to consciously discover our hidden potential through learning. "Learning involves concentration but also rest or doing something else". Dr. Oakley insists that to expand our minds we must help our children expand theirs and encourage them to do things that are not their strengths.
