One of the most counterintuitive facts of our universe is that you can’t go faster than the speed of light. From this single observation arise all of the mind-bending behaviors of special relativity. But why is this so? In this in-depth video, Fermilab’s Dr. Don Lincoln explains the real reason that you can’t go faster than the speed of light. It will blow your mind.
Fermilab scientist Don Lincoln describes antimatter and its properties. He also explains why antimatter, though a reality, doesn't pose any current threat to our existence!
Einstein's equation E = mc2 is often said to mean that energy can be converted into matter. More accurately, energy can be converted to matter and antimatter.
During the first moments of the Big Bang, the universe was smaller, hotter and energy was everywhere. As the universe expanded and cooled, the energy converted into matter and antimatter. According to our best understanding, these two substances should have been created in equal quantities. However when we look out into the cosmos we see only matter and no antimatter.
The absence of antimatter is one of the Big Mysteries of modern physics. In this video, Fermilab's Dr. Don Lincoln explains the problem, although doesn't answer it. The answer, as in all Big Mysteries, is still unknown and one of the leading research topics of contemporary science.

Radioactive decay is the transmutation of one subatomic particle into another. In most instances, what happens is that existing particles move to new configurations. However in radioactive decays using the weak force, a particular kind of particle disappears and is replaced by a completely different particle. In this video, Fermilab’s Dr. Don Lincoln talks about how it all works and even describes a type of decay that has never been observed and, if it were observed, it would require the textbooks be rewritten.

The subatomic world is governed by three known forces, each with vastly different energy. In this video, Fermilab’s Dr. Don Lincoln takes on the weak nuclear force and shows why it is so much weaker than the other known forces.

Albert Einstein said that what he wanted to know was “God’s thoughts,” which is a metaphor for the ultimate and most basic rules of the universe. Once known, all other phenomena would then be a consequence of these simple rules. While modern science is far from that goal, we have some thoughts on how this inquiry might unfold. In this video, Fermilab’s Dr. Don Lincoln tells what we know about GUTs (grand unified theories) and TOEs (theories of everything).
Does size really matter? For lenses it does! Also I show creepy eyeballs and try and stab a cheap lens to death.

This is my last NAB 2018 video. I thought it would be nice to piece together a sort of NAB reel (shot on my phone) for anyone who wasn't able to make it. You'll see tons of gear, a few cameos from Dave Dugdale at learningvideo.com, Curtis and Cary Judd from learnlightandsound.com, Dave Andrade from Post Color Blog, Caleb Pike from dslrvideoshooter.com, Philip Bloom from everywhere, Ted Sim from Aputure, and many others. I hope you enjoy it. I'll return to my regularly scheduled programming this week, and thanks for being a Basic Filmmaker subscriber and viewer.

By popular request, I compare a high-end ($300) lapel mic against a low-end ($18) lapel mic and of course, the $300 one is way better! Or is it?
By the way, you'll be better able to tell the difference if you watch this in HD.

Video uploaded a YEAR ago and not published. Tests using mic, foam, and blimp. Thing learned (see very end of the video and description) is a cable electrical short can be REALLY subtle.
How do I "forget" to publish a video? I didn't want someone thinking they would use the configuration I am showing for doing audio, as between the Rode NTG-3, the blimp and the Zoom H6 you're looking at over $1000, and you wouldn't really use a blimp like this.
Regardless, I thought this might assist someone with mysterious audio problems. I had very subtle audio changes in my setup. I thought when a cable went bad it would, well, go bad. Not so. This XLR cable went bad and simply cut the input signal by about 3-6dB.
After playing around with a lot of other things trying to isolate what was happening, I stumbled upon the cable shorting out, as you'll see at the very end of the video.

The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, is one of the world’s best-known choral groups. Founded in the 15th century, it ranks among the oldest of its kind, and, while originally created for singing the daily services in the college chapel, now enjoys an international tour schedule that has seen it perform all over Europe and beyond. Every Christmas Eve, millions of people tune in to watch the choir’s A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from King’s – a service which has been continuously broadcast since 1928.
Recorded in 1994, this reissue joins the group’s already extensive discography of Christmas music – recordings that have enhanced its worldwide fame and reputation. The compilation mixes some of the best-loved traditionals, including Once in royal David’s city and O Come all ye faithful, with more recent repertoire – such as Rutter’s rousing What Sweeter Music and Judith Weir’s striking Illuminare, Jerusalem (specially commissioned by the choir for its 1985 annual service). Also featured are traditional German, French, Dutch and Polish carols (including two settings of Dulce Jubilo) – works which, together with Pärt’s enchanting Bogoróditse Dyévo, contribute to a wonderfully eclectic disc that provides over an hour of festive cheer.

About this album:
In today’s hectic world, it is increasingly important to relax and take time out for yourself. This special collection of beautiful and serene adagios will help you do just that. The set features over two hours of soothing music, including many slow movements that are at the emotional core of timeless and best‐loved masterpieces.
You’ll be captivated by the variety of wonderful and instantly recognizable melodies heard here: the wistful spiritual from Dvořák’s ‘New World’ Symphony, the exquisite interweaving lines of Bach’s ‘Air on a G String’, and some of Mozart’s most impressive showcases for how to really make an instrument sing in the Clarinet Concerto and ‘Elvira Madigan’ Piano Concerto. And evocative and atmospheric adagios – such as Grieg’s ‘Morning’ and the slow movement from Beethoven’s ‘Pastoral’ Symphony with its distinctive birdsong calls in the flute, oboe and clarinet – will transport you to another world, far away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Other highlights include some of the most enchanting slow movements in the piano repertoire – such as the poignant Adagio cantabile from Beethoven’s ‘Pathétique’ Sonata and stunning concerto movements by Chopin, Ravel and Rachmaninoff – Fauré’s intense Élégie for cello, and Mahler’s tender and heartbreakingly romantic Adagietto. The emotional power of these adagios is brought to the fore by first‐rate orchestras such as the Staatskapelle Dresden, Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic, under the baton of eminent conductors such as Theodore Kuchar, Herbert Blomstedt and Rudolf Barshai.
A moment to relax, to withdraw from an increasingly hectic life, overfed with stimuli from work, society obligations and social networks: this music will calm down your jittery nerves, and will take you on slow waves of soothing melodies to a world of pure sound and tranquillity. A generous selection of the most famous slow movements: Air (Bach), Adagio (Marcello), Adagio (Rachmaninoff 2nd piano concerto), Scene at the Brook (Beethoven’s Pastorale), The Adagietto from the movie ‘Death in Venice’ (Mahler) and many more.
Excellent performances by Staatskapelle Dresden, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra and soloists Klára Würtz and Misha Goldstein.

This set is, despite its misleading early opus number, very much the work of the mature Vivaldi, now 40 years of age and a leading light of the vibrant Venetian musical scene, producing at an astonishing rate not only concertos for the adroit pupils of the Ospedale della Pietà where he was a much-loved music master, but also entertainments of varying scale for more public events and audiences. These sonatas are but for two or three performers, or even four: a moot point for musicologists. L’Arte dell’Arco follow modern scholarly practice in assigning the ‘accompaniment’ to the virtuoso solo instrument to a continuo group of cello, keyboard and plucked instruments, though they take care to offer instrumental colours as variegated as possible by alternating between harpsichord and chamber organ, and theorbo and Baroque guitar, as the character of the musintal craftsmanship, continually appears to demand or request it. The sonatas were written with publication in mind, not in Venice but Amsterdam, then the home of instrumental music publishing, and they take their place within his carefully constructed 12 opus collections as a sophisticated set of sonatas displaying all the different characters of the Italian Baroque school of instrumental craftsmanship, continually enlivened by Vivaldi’s unique brand of melodic genius.
