In 1791, just after he completed The Magic Flute, Mozart received a call from a mysterious man commissioning him to compose a Requiem. The visitor gave Mozart an unsigned letter, which asked if he’d be prepared to undertake the composition, how much he’d charge for doing so and how long he would take to complete the work. The visitor returned a few days later, and paid the money Mozart had asked for, and was told that the work would be ready in four weeks. He who identified neither himself nor the name of his employer, and said that a person close to his master had died, and that his master wished to have a new Requiem performed in their memory.Mozart set about composition immediately, in spite of the fact that he also had to complete La clemenza di Tito for the coronation of Emperor Leopold in Prague.

By this time Mozart’s health was in a steep decline. He suffered frequent blackouts, and took to his bed, still insisting on working on the Requiem. His pupil Süssmayr helped him score the work, but Mozart died on 5th December 1791, leaving it unfinished. Süssmayr (who may have been romantically involved with Constanze at the time) was persuaded to complete the work.

Like the C minor Mass, the Requiem is a work of high drama, and written on a large scale. It set the pattern for the great Requiems of Berlioz and Verdi, especially in the Dies irae, where the writing is truly electrifying and the terror of the Day of Wrath palpable.

The year was 1778. Mozart (22 Years old) was in Paris, trying to break into musical society and get a well-payed placement.

It was first the first trip he had made without his father Leopold. But the places he visited weren't impressed by his skills now, even though they'd been whipped into a wild frenzy by Mozart when he was a 6 year old performing prodigy.

His entire Paris trip was catastrophic, personally and professionally. Aside from his mother dying during his stay there (she had accompanied him), French musicians and listeners were snobby and rude to Mozart. He deeply resented them for the rest of his life.

Worse still, his job search was futile. Nobody wanted to hire him!

But a fantastic opportunity presented itself at one point. Mozart was asked to write a symphony to open Paris's most famous concert series, with a fantastically large orchestra at his disposal.

Perfect - a chance to make a huge splash, and get himself noticed by Paris's elite!

He finished the piece, his 31st symphony, in June 1778. The premiere was at a private concert at an ambassador's house, and the public premiere followed a few days later.

Mozart had tried hard to fit his symphony into the mold of French tastes. The audiences in Paris at that time loved raw excitement and flashy colors in their music. Mozart delivered in spades, using his large orchestra to dazzle and delight.

The audience were very pleased with the symphony, even applauding in the middle of it at certain points!

Among the most revered virtuosos of all time, Nicolò Paganini was a true musical legend of his era, inspiring musicians such as Roberto Schumann to forge his own career as a pianist. Franz Schubert was also a regular audience member at Paganini’s concerts, despite the outlandish ticket prices.
Paganini often remarked that, despite his legendary status as a violinist, he found it rather difficult to compose for the instrument. This release brings together the Italian maestro’s two violin concertos: No.1, his first large work, was written around 1817 but published posthumously in 1851, and the second dates from 1826. Audiences were wowed at the premiere of No.1, thanks to its many extended passages of double-stopping and harmonics. Concerto No.2 in B minor is nicknamed ‘La campanella’, famous for its third-movement Rondo that employs a small bell at each reinstatement of the theme.

Kristóf Baráti is the soloist, performing the works on his much-loved ‘Lady Harmsworth’ Stradivarius violin. The release is a welcome addition to his ever-growing Brilliant Classics discography, of which Beethoven’s Complete Violin Sonatas (94310) garnered such reviews as ‘today’s reference recording’ (Frankfurte Allgemeine). Here he is joined by esteemed conductor Eiji Oue and the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover.

Accepted onto the early admissions programme of the University of Chicago, Philip Glass graduated aged just nineteen with a degree in Mathematics and Philosophy, practising the piano in his spare time. Subsequently studying at the Juilliard School, Glass’s name has since become synonymous with the minimalist style. His film compositions have earned him a Golden Globe as well as three Academy Award nominations.
This selection of pieces showcases Glass’s music for solo piano, with each of the works baring the hallmarks of minimalism. Among the pieces featured in the collection is Metamorphosis, a set of five variations that evolve over the course of the entire work to create a stirring final movement. Also present are extracts from the soundtrack of Stephen Daldry’s film The Hours, as well as ‘Truman Sleeps’ from The Truman Show (which earned Glass a Golden Globe award for ‘Best Original Score’). The collection ends with the ‘Trilogy’ Sonata, containing piano transcriptions of Glass’s three ‘portrait’ operas: Einstein on the Beach, Satyagraha and Akhnaten.
Dutch pianist and composer Jeroen Van Veen studied at the Utrecht Conservatory and has played with many orchestras throughout Europe and the USA, under renowned conductors such as Howard Williams, Peter Eötvös and Robert Craft. An accomplished recitalist, van Veen has also appeared at festivals including the Reder Piano Festival and the Festival der Kunsten (Bad Gleichenberg). His compositional style is closely related to minimalism, and contains elements of jazz, blues and pop music.

Arvo Pärt: Variationen zur Gesundung von Arinuschka.

Jeroen Van Veen has released a series of acclaimed recordings on Brilliant Classics of music by the masters of Minimalism, that 1960s-derived aesthetic in which it is not so much the case that more can be said with less as that less seems to be necessary in an increasingly noisy and chaotic world. The Estonian composer Arvo Pärt has never counted himself as among the minimalist number, nor indeed was he schooled in their new traditions, but emerged in the 1960s as an angry and dissonant voice whose musically expressed anger against Communist oppression of his native country could barely be contained within the tumultuous textures of works such as the Third Symphony, but a combination of personal circumstances and aesthetic decisions led him to pare back his style to the world of eerie calm and yet underlying melancholy that has made works such as the Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten such an enduring favourite even among audiences who would not otherwise count themselves as aficionados of the European contemporary music scene. But then Pärt has never fitted into any one stylistic box, and alongside the quiet rapture of Für Alina we may find the student-era tinkling of the intriguing early Dance Pieces, as well as arrangements of classics such as Fratres and Spiegel im Spiegel – here interpreted by Dutch cellist Douw Fonda – that seem to preserve their special mood no matter what the instrumental forces; a quality they share with works of Pärt's compositional idol, J.S. Bach.
