The discovery of the Higgs boson was an international endeavor, involving thousands of physicists from across the world. While the accelerator at which the experimental work was done is located on Europe, the US supplied more physicists than any other single country. America had a very large role in the discovery of the Higgs particle and continues to have a leading role in the ongoing studies of the boson's properties. This video describes some of the contributions of U.S. universities and laboratories.

Fermilab recently hosted more than 300 middle school students from 13 schools for a special showing of Hidden Figures and a panel discussion with four Fermilab scientists, including Maurice Ball. This video was played as part of the panel introductions.

Less than 15 percent of bachelor’s degrees in engineering, math, physics and astronomy are awarded each year to underrepresented minorities, according to the American Physical Society. Students who are underrepresented minorities or are economically disadvantaged may lack exposure to science and guidance from mentors to encourage them to nurture their interest in STEM. The event was aimed at showing students scientists and engineers at Fermilab similar to them, and removing the mystery surrounding their nearby particle physics lab. The goal of the program was to show fifth- to eighth-grade students that entering a STEM field was possible for them – no matter their background. You can read more about the event here: http://news.fnal.gov/2018/02/f....ermilab-organizes-hi

As a minority student, Maurice Ball faced challenges in his college engineering courses and, overcoming them, found himself taking on different, surprising and exciting challenges as an engineer at Fermilab. Learn what he'd tell his younger high school and college self if he could.

LBNF/DUNE is an international mega-science project hosted by the Department of Energy’s Fermilab. http://www.fnal.gov/dune It will send a beam of tiny particles called neutrinos 1,300 kilometers straight through the earth from Fermilab to the Sanford Underground Research Facility. It will help solve some of the deepest mysteries of the universe and boost innovation while training young people around the world in science, engineering and computing. Scientists and engineers at universities and laboratories are working hand-in-hand with companies to design electronics, build hardware and develop computer programs for the project. LBNF and DUNE will create jobs as well as demand for materials, products and services. Students in dozens of countries around the world will start their careers in science and engineering with this project, and then transfer their knowledge into industry, medicine, computer science and many other fields.

I've been looking for a way to get rid of all the light and mic stands and get back some floor space. I bought these light brackets and they work great! I'll be doing the same for a ceiling mounted microphone (my 4th one on order), and maybe even use one to mount my camera. More in the description. ▼

CLOSING 12 TIPS:

One: When it comes to someone talking, sound is more important than visuals.

Two: Don't use the camera mic unless absolutely necessary.

Three: You spent a crap ton of money of camera gear, time to spend some money on sound.

Four: Get a good audio recorder.

Five: Get a good mic that meets your needs.

Six: Get that mic as close to the person's mouth as possible.

Seven: Garbage audio recording sucks, get great audio up front.

Eight: Set your sound levels, record something, check it, adjust as needed.

Nine: Put on a pair of headphones and listen for bad stuff like AC or refrigerators running.

Ten: Slate, clap, or snap your fingers everytime you hit record.

Eleven: Play with an audio editor and see if you can sweeten up your audio.

Twelve: Don't be lazy, use an audio recorder, bring your audio into your editor, and take the extra 30 seconds to sync up your sound.

UPDATE: It uses less than 300W, that's 1700W less than the equivalent light at the same output.
