Album: Impressions Of The West Lake
Impressions Of The West Lake is a modern day opera conceived and directed by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Zhang Yimou (Hero, Curse of the Golden Flower), the visionary artist behind the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
The production is highlighted by music composed by the Grammy and Golden Globe Award winning artist Kitaro. This pairing of East-meets-West is a rare combination of two artists at the peak of their creative talents.
The opera also marks a reunion for Kitaro and music arranger Randy Miller, the pair's first effort together since the Golden Globe-winning soundtrack to Oliver Stone's 1993 film Heaven and Earth. This opera is another impressive credit for Miller, whose lengthy career as a composer, orchestrator, and conductor for films includes such highlights as Without Limits, First Snow, and The Soong Sisters (Best Original Score, Hong Kong Film Award).
The show's soundtrack also features rising Chinese pop star Jane Zhang, a gifted young performer who provides stunning vocals to the production on the title track, "Impressions Of The Westlake".
Through the course of his career, Kitaro has sold millions of albums, CD's and DVD's worldwide. Kitaro's various sound collaborations and resonant, multi-textured compositions, with their crescendos of passion and oases of serenity, truly defy the constraints of any genre. His pioneering fusion of cultures, techniques and spheres of consciousness is truly his own. With Impressions Of The West Lake, Kitaro continues to explore new, uncharted terrain with his magnificently expansive vision and ever-questing spirit.

Composer Kitaro, with a Golden Globe Award, Grammy nomination, and two dozen albums to his credit, is revered most for his ability to embody the human spirit in his music. Today, Kitaro's music is increasingly progressive, full of innovative touches. Resonant with exotic Japanese instruments as well as the more familiar guitar, flute, and drums, it shimmers one minute and rumbles the next, by turns soothing and stirring, atonal and rhythmic, orchestrally full and dramatic, yet surprisingly intimate, with the ability to transport the listener on a far-reaching musical journey that draws refrains of East and West together. Includes 5.1 audio created from original 2 track stereo.

Kitaro - Celestial Scenery: Silent Praying, Volume 2
iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/alb....um/celestial-scenery
MP3: http://www.payloadz.com/go?id=1489649
Kitaro s second album in the Celestial Scenery compilation, Silent Prayer, is only nine tracks long but clocks in just under an hour of music. Naming a recording "Silent" anything is the same sort of Zen reserved for questions like "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" Kitaro & Yu-Xiao Guang are in the right frame of thought here, and produced a soothing piece of work that helps the listener to focus on achieving an ideal state for mediation. Their New Age sound is peppered by electronic pings and pongs, harp, Japanese flute, rainstick work, and uplifting compositions from a full symphony orchestra. The pieces on Silent Prayer are not unlike to the finales on wuxia film soundtracks; it s easy to picture a lone victorious swordsman in the center a verdant forest, surrounded majestic mountains, and a pristine lake bathed in the late afternoon sun.

A few notes on the puzzle:
1. A half-full container of honey does pretty well in reproducing the behaviour of the mystery cylinder. I wonder if the motion is a little smoother or more periodic with the ping-pong balls because they move as organized objects - also the delays between motion seemed to be longer with them than without ping pong balls.
2. For the average speed track problem, every time I said velocity I meant speed. Sorry to the pedants out there who are perhaps looking for some trick answer due to displacement being zero when you run around a track.
3. Although a lot of people identified it was something about a train's wheels that move backwards, fewer identified that specifically it was the part of the flange below the rail. Some simply said the bottom half of the wheel.
4. The bicycle question is perhaps the most complex of these riddles. If you tried it with a bike you likely found that it went backwards. But what happens if you sit on the bike and only push backwards on the bottom pedal. The answer might surprise you so give it a shot!

Onbashira Festival
http://www.onbashira.jp/
- Kitaro dedication for Goshinki -
Gaia Onbashira is a musical exploration of respect and how it relates to ancient traditions. Gaia loosely translates to Goddess of the Earth or Mother Earth and Onbashira is a festival that occurs every seven years in Japan. During the Onbashira festival, eight individuals are chosen for spiritually cleansing. The participants ascend a mountain and attempt to spiritually connect with the heavens through the trees. These trees are then allowed to fall down the mountain and eventually become posts and the foundation of a ceremonial shrine. Through these events, these individuals learn to become more in touch with their spirits.

I have been working with Catalyst on ABC1 to bring some Veritasium to Australian TV. In this segment I ask why astronauts in the space station are weightless. The most common answer is because there is no gravity in space. But of course there is gravity in space, especially where the space station is located (only about 400km from Earth's surface). So astronauts still experience a gravitational pull - it's just that they and the space station are in free fall so they are accelerating together towards the Earth. The space station doesn't crash into the Earth because of its orbital velocity - it's going 28,000 km/h so as it falls, the Earth curves away from it.
What happens when single photons of light pass through a double slit and are detected by a photomultiplier tube? In 1801 Thomas Young seemed to settle a long-running debate about the nature of light with his double slit experiment. He demonstrated that light passing through two slits creates patterns like water waves, with the implication that it must be a wave phenomenon.
However, experimental results in the early 1900s found that light energy is not smoothly distributed as in a classical wave, rather it comes in discrete packets, called quanta and later photons. These are indivisible particles of light. So what would happen if individual photons passed through a double slit? Would they make a pattern like waves or like particles?
On a stream of water you can levitate light balls of all sizes and even disks and cylinders. The mechanism is not the Bernoulli effect...
Want to make this at home? https://youtu.be/BppcHF2EdAY
My friend Blake from InnoVinci emailed me with a cool idea for a video and footage of levitating balls in water streams. Initially it was tough to explain the physics of what was going on. The standard Bernoulli effect relies on the object being completely immersed in the upward-flowing fluid. But in this case the water seems to form a single stream around the object and it's deflected away and down from the stream. By Newton's third law, the force on the water by the ball is equal and opposite to the force of the water back on the ball, pushing it up into the stream. There is a stable equilibrium position because if the ball moves into the stream, it "cuts off" the water going over the ball so it drifts out. If it drifts out too far, then lots of water passes over the ball, pushing it back into the stream.

In Divine Spirits, the eighth album in the Celestial Scenery compilation, Kitaro draws his inspiration from the invisible deities and forces of nature. The Taiko is here, as well as its companion thunder. The keyboard is here as well, complementing the sound of water. The synthesizer ties it up into a nice little aural package. There's even a live version of Mandala nestled in as the third track. Over-all, it's a calming album with excellent texture that's sure to please any long-standing Kitaro fan.

Psychological literature shows that we are more sensitive to small losses and than small gains, with most people valuing a loss around 1.5-2.5 times as much as a gain. This means that we often turn down reasonable opportunities for fear of the loss. However over the course of our lives we will be exposed to many risks and opportunities and this invariably means that taking every small reasonable bet will leave us better off than saying no to all of them.
NOTE: The video is not saying to accept every bet, only those with reasonable odds (preferably in your favour), and those which if you lose would not cause significant financial or other damage. In those cases it is wise to be loss averse!
