With their probing paws and destructive behavior, the raccoon has gained a reputation as a garbage bandit, capable of finding a meal in any urban landscape. Yet despite their proximity to our homes and their evident resourcefulness, very few researchers have truly tested the problem-solving abilities of the “trash panda.” As part of a multi-year study exploring the cognition of raccoons, researchers at the University of Wyoming’s Animal Cognition Lab are pushing the limits of the species’ learning by providing both captivity and street-dwelling specimens with a variety of tests.

For humans to travel to the Moon and Mars, they'll need a companion - a lowly weed. Just as Matt Damon survives on Mars in The Martian because he cultivates plants in the red planet's hostile conditions, astronauts will need to understand how to grow plants in extreme climates. Dr. Anna-Lisa Paul and Dr. Robert J. Ferl at the University of Florida, Gainesville Space Plants Lab, put weeds in unique situations - like sending them to the International Space Station - to study their behavior on a molecular level. Their research could pave the way for growing plants in extreme climates on Earth, the Moon, long-term space travel, and even Mars.
Deep in an abandoned gold mine in rural South Dakota, a team of physicists are hunting for astrophysical treasure. Their rare and elusive quarry is dark matter, a theoretical particle which has never been seen or directly detected. Yet its gravitational effect on distant galaxies hints at its existence and provides ample evidence to fuel the experiments and aspirations of scientists at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Insulated by 4,850 feet of rock, the researchers have constructed the world's most sensitive particle detector, known as the Large Underground Xenon Experiment, or "LUX." Their goal is to use this complex device to capture an epiphanous event: the interaction between dark matter and atoms inside a chilled tank of liquid xenon. If they're successful, the researchers may not only solve some of the biggest mysteries in astrophysics but affirm their faith in the nature of dark matter.

As the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute's first employee, Tarter has accumulated E.T.-themed office ornaments for the last thirty years -- including a bottle of wine only to be opened "only upon detection of Extraterrestrial signal."

Some say that beauty's only skin-deep. But one veterinary surgeon and his team look beneath the surface...literally. Scott Echols says that we don't actually know very much about the anatomy of animals because haven't had a way to properly visualize it. But now, with the help of a new imaging technology called BriteVu, researchers have access to a trove of data on animal anatomy.
After an animal has been euthanized, researchers inject a compound into its blood vessels that allows them to take a CT scan and create multiple 3-D images, which allow researchers to analyze the intricate anatomy that lies below the skin. They can see every blood vessel in the body, from capillaries to the arteries, and everything in between.

"La bella durmiente" es un cuento de hadas nacido de la tradición oral. En la actualidad, las versiones más populares suelen ser relatos basados en el cuento de Charles Perrault e influidos por elementos de los Hermanos Grimm.
Tras una larga esterilidad un rey y su reina tienen una hija. Invitan a un festejo en honor de la niña a varias hadas o damas que mediante encantamientos le otorgan dones positivos. Pero entonces irrumpe una dama o hada que olvidaron invitar y, ofendida, sentencia que el día que la niña cumpla quince -o dieciséis- años se pinchará el dedo con un huso y morirá. Pero una de las hadas o damas invitadas que todavía no había otorgado su don a la princesa mitiga esa maldición: la princesa se pinchará el dedo con un huso, pero en vez de morir dormirá un siglo.
En vano el rey prohíbe todos los husos en su reino y los manda quemar todos: al cumplir la edad indicada la princesa, curioseando en una torre del castillo, encuentra una viejecita que hila con un huso, la muchacha lo toma, se pincha el dedo y....
...qué ocurre con la bella princesa entonces? Pon mucha atención si quieres conocer el final de este maravilloso cuento de hadas.

El País de las Maravillas que se describe en la historia es creado básicamente a través de juegos con la lógica, de una forma tan especial que la obra ha llegado a tener popularidad en los más variados ambientes, desde niños o matemáticos hasta psiconautas.

La historia relatada en el libro tuvo tres fases. La primera y más importante comenzó durante un paseo en barco por el río Támesis el 4 de julio de 1862. En el barco viajaban el matemático Charles L. Dodgson, el reverendo Robinson Duckworth, y las tres hermanas Liddell: Lorina Charlotte, Alice y Edith, de trece, diez y ocho años, respectivamente. El viaje por el río había comenzado en el Puente Folly, cerca de Oxford, Inglaterra, y recorrería ocho kilómetros, hasta Godstow, antes de volver a Christ Church, en Oxford.
