Composer & Artist:
Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Artists: Herman Jeurissen (horn),Netherlands (Chamber Orchestra),Roy Goodman (conductor)
About this Album:
Mozart excelled in all areas of composition, and his horn concertos – despite making up a very modest part of his total output – still reside among the finest achievements in the horn literature. The composer became acquainted with the mellow sonorities of the instrument from an early age, courtesy of his friend Joseph Leutgeb, who had been employed by the Hofkapelle in Salzburg. It was not until the remaining 10 years of his life, however, that Mozart finally set to work on his six concertos for horn.
Apart from K370b/371, which represents the composer’s first attempt at writing a horn concerto and whose musical content differs markedly from that of the later ones – there are no ‘hunting effects’ in the rondo and the first movement is more declamatory in style than lyrical – it seems that all of the works were composed for Leutgeb, who was often a target of Mozart’s mockery and teasing. Though the numerous points of harmonic, melodic and structural correspondence between the pieces suggest that Mozart did not take this genre especially seriously, the works still delight the listener for their gaiety, lightness of touch and warmth of orchestration. It is therefore a shame that only three of the six pieces remain complete, a resulting combination of more pressing work, lost manuscripts and the composer’s untimely death. Jeurissen, the soloist on this recording and principal horn player of the Residentie Orchestra in The Hague, has taken it upon himself, based on analyses of similar passages in other works by Mozart, to work up all of these fragments into playable, practical versions. The results are laudable, and Jeurissen’s passion for the works is evident from his highly accomplished, charismatic playing. Hungary.

Himekami, aka Himekami Sensation ((姫神せんせいしょん) was the musical project of late electronic composer and musician Yoshiaki Hoshi. The j-card and contents of this tape highlight the context of the new age music craze, with a catalog of other Higher Octave releases and a postcard to send to the label for more info.
Moonwater was an album that saw an audience wider than that of his native Japan, seeing distribution in the US via Higher Octave Music.
This album exemplifies the new age electronic style he was best known for, new age meets traditional music with unabashed synth timbres and instrumentation. It was a departure from his synthpop and electro-pop albums earlier in his career, which sounded more like YMO than say, his new age peer Kitaro.
Himekami was quite prolific, releasing dozens of albums and and having work appear in various film, TV and VG soundtracks. Although a solo moniker he worked with his wife Etsuko and performed with a band live, a band that continued to perform and record after his death in 2004 under the direction of his son Yoshiki.
From the album Colours of the Mind (by Sojha).

There’s a price we pay when we illuminate our cities. The light interferes with our sleep cycles and can have real and serious health consequences. There are a few remote places, though, where you can still find true darkness. This release presents works of Chopin written in his Vienna period, and here they are played on exactly such an instrument, as is still preserved in the Italian Palazzo Contucci in Montepulciano.
The young Chopin, a child prodigy if ever there was one, soon found his surroundings in his native Warsaw too narrow, and visited the cultural capital Vienna during the years 1829-1831. Here he met the local piano manufacturer Conrad Graf and was seduced by his instruments, with their light action and delicate, pliant sound.
His triumphal concerts in Vienna were played on Graf’s pianos, and the young Fryderick was presented one as a gift by Graf himself.
Other information:
- The extensive booklet supplies historical background, pictures, illustrations and photos.
- Costantino Mastroprimiano has already recorded extensively for Brilliant Classics: the complete keyboard music of Clementi highly praised by international critics.

Artists: Erik Bosgraaf
About this Album:
Stravinsky famously quipped that Vivaldi didn’t write 400 concertos, rather he wrote one concerto 400 times. Rather unfair, though witty. For many people though, Vivaldi is the composer of The Four Seasons (the first four of the twelve concertos Op.8), and maybe the famous Gloria. He is a composer who repays closer attention. There are some superb concertos in his large output, and some of them were sufficiently striking enough to attract the attention of J.S. Bach and Johann Quantz. His concertos are remarkable not only for the wealth of invention and the outstanding quality of the music, but also for the amazing range of instruments he wrote for.
This release is devoted to concertos for sopranino and alto recorders. Two of his greatest concertos ‘Tempesta di mare’ (Storm at Sea) and ‘La notte’ (Night) feature on the programme.
