On Jan. 23, 2012, Fermilab broke ground for a one-of-its-kind research facility to develop and operate particle detectors that use liquid-argon technology to explore the mysteries of energy, matter, space and time. The new generation of liquid-argon detectors will allow scientists to observe neutrino interactions with greater precision and resolution than ever before. The MicroBooNE experiment (URL: http://www.fnal.gov/pub/today/....archive_2011/today11 ), which comprises a 170-ton neutrino detector, will be the first to move into the new facility. Reposted 12/30.

Physicist Federico Izraelevitch normally works on projects at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, but for the next year he will be on a different mission: leading hardware and instrumentation workshops throughout Latin America. The Escaramujo Project will take kits to build cosmic ray detectors to various institutions to encourage physicists to learn more about the components used in massive physics projects and join international collaborations seeking the secrets of the universe. The project is made possible by many partners. Learn more at www.escaramujoproject.org. Spanish subtitles are enabled for this video.

Fermilab is upgrading its accelerator complex under the upcoming Proton Improvement Plan II, or PIP-II. The heart of the project is a superconducting linear accelerator, which will help generate intense proton beams for the lab's experiments. Follow the PIP-II beam as it accelerates to higher energies.

Five contestants, 10 minutes each. Tell a general public audience about your research. Better make it interesting because the audience votes on the winner! This year five students from the Illinois Math and Science Academy, coached by five scientists from Fermilab, present their topics of interest.

With 11 February marking the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, female physicists, engineers and computer scientists from CERN and from Fermilab share their experiences of building a career in science.

Jeny Teheran is a security analyst and cybersecurity researcher at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. That means keeping up with and taking care of hardware and software vulnerabilities so that the experiments can carry out their science in a secure manner. It's a fast-paced job where you have to come with the best solution you can put in place, right in the moment.

"I would recommend this job because it challenges you. It pushes you to be on top of your game. You have to improve your analytical skills; you have to react fast; you have to communicate better." - Jeny says.

Jeny came to Fermilab from the Caribbean coast of Colombia. She grew up in a house with few toys but lots of books, and says she has always felt close to science. With a degree in systems and computing engineering, she arrived at Fermilab four years ago as an intern to work on the offline production team for neutrino experiments. A year later, she was hired as a security analyst. "And I'm loving it," she says.

Today we’re looking at how society becomes stratified along gender lines. We’ll discuss Raewyn Connell’s concept of hegemonic masculinities and emphasized femininities. We’ll explore gender socialization in the home, media, and schools. Finally, we’ll explain how gender stratification results in different outcomes by gender in education, occupations, earnings, and criminal activity.
