We're kicking off our exploration of muscles with a look at the complex and important relationship between actin and myosin. Your smooth, cardiac, and skeletal muscles create movement by contracting and releasing in a process called the sliding filament model. Your skeletal muscles are constructed like a rope made of bundles of protein fibers, and that the smallest strands are your actin and myosin myofilaments. Its their use of calcium and ATP that causes the binding and unbinding that makes sarcomeres contract and relax.

Is it possible to reconstruct sound from high-speed video images?
Part of this video was sponsored by LastPass: http://bit.ly/2SmRQkk
Special thanks to Dr. Abe Davis for revisiting his research with me: http://abedavis.com
This video was based on research by Dr. Abe Davis and colleagues. I found out about this work years ago and was fascinated by the way he was able to capture vibration information in image-only video. I always imagined the motions of objects would be visible as when recording a tuning fork in slow motion - so deriving sound from high speed images seemed a feasible task. But the reality is much more difficult.
Sound vibrations only cause objects to wiggle by about a micrometer. This is much smaller than a pixel, so the algorithm must understand the characteristics of the image. A move in one direction should cause some pixels to lighten slightly, while others darken - and this behavior is correlated along the edges of the image. So noise can be reduced because it's random over the image and there are enough places to sample that you can get it to cancel out.
Something I'm wondering now is - would it be possible to capture sound in a single image? I'm thinking it would have to be an image of a large object or space because the wavelengths of typical sounds are quite long. Maybe a high frequency sound could be imaged in a suitable medium...

Sugata Mitra is internationally famous when TED, an organization that promotes technology, education, and design, chose his conference as the most inspiring and with the most potential change of the year 2013. His story is the story of a young and brilliant physicist who almost 20 years ago placed a computer with an Internet connection on the wall of a suburb of New Delhi, near his office, and asked himself, would they get those uneducated children learn for themselves? The recordings of the camera hidden in that place discovered to the professor Mitra that the children played with the computer, they learned to use it and in addition, they taught to others without the intervention of any adult. His story was called "Hole in the Wall" and inspired part of the plot of the Oscar-winning film, 'Slumdog Millionaire'. Mitra advanced his research of what he termed as minimally invasive education and reproduced the test elsewhere in India and the world. The results? The self-learning capacity of children with the use of the Internet and new technologies is surprising. Today, its educational proposal is known as SOLE (acronym of Self Organized Learning Environments).
