About this Album:
In 1868 Rossini died, and the leading composers of the day grouped together to contribute to a jointly composed Requiem for the great man who had dominated Italian opera for half a century. Much to Verdi’s frustration, the work was never performed. In 1871, the director of the Milan Conservatoire asked him if he’d ever thought of composing a Requiem of his own – after all, he’d written the Libera me, the final part of the multicomposer work. Verdi dismissed the idea, saying that there were enough Requiems already.

In 1873, Verdi’s friend, and favourite author Alessandro Manzoni died aged 88. Verdi had first read his novels when he was 16 years old. He was devastated at the news of Manzoni’s death, so much so he was unable to attend his funeral. This provided the catalyst for what is the grandest of all Requiems. Premiered in 1874 with the composer conducting, it was an immediate success, and Verdi toured the work to Paris, London, Cologne and Vienna – in fact he conducted it more often than any of his operas. Overtly operatic in nature, it has been called ‘Verdi’s greatest opera’, but it is a deeply spiritual work, adhering to the traditional Mass for the dead. It ranks among the very greatest of religious works alongside Bach’s Mass in B minor, Mozart’s Requiem and Beethoven’s Missa solemnis.

The complete sonatas for Viola da Gamba of Johann Sebastian Bach.

In this new recording of the magnificent (and still undervalued) sonatas for viola da gamba by Bach. The keyboard is an organ, a german school Rückpositiv. The use of the organ instead of the harpsichord has changed the interpretation of the musician to a large extent: the sustained sound of the organ tones (contrary to the quickly decaying sound of the harpsichord) heightens the tension of the harmonics, especially the dissonances. The length of the notes is therefore often shortened, taking into account the reverberant acoustics of the church, which also affected the tempo choices. In short, this interpretation is completely different from the harpsichord version, shedding a new light on these masterpieces by Bach, who himself was never averse to using different instruments for his works.

Valentina Levko was another in the glorious line of Russian 20th-century contraltos who in some ways defined the sound of Russian opera for ears, both Eastern and Western, which were often discovering the rich tradition of Russian opera for the first time through recordings. Levko's name, however, unlike compatriots such as Elena Obratzova, never travelled as far or as well. Committed to her contract at the Bolshoi, she spurned several opportunities to make a name for herself in the West, with the lucrative recording contracts that would surely have followed. And yet hers was, as this important set reveals, a voice and dramatic presence firmly in the mould of greats of the past such as Zara Dolukhanova.

Erik Satie (1866-1925) was without doubt one of great ‘one offs’in musical history. Impossible to categorise, he composed around 100 works, which include film scores, ballets, melodies and above all piano works. A friend of Debussy, Ravel, Cocteau,Picasso and Diaghalev, he was at the core of the avant garde in Paris, and yet he remained an outsider – deliberately so.

Happy playing piano in jazz bars – where he and Debussy met each other, Satie was the antithesis of the late 19th century and early 20th musical world as dominated by Wagner and his adherents. The master of Bayreuth had proclaimed himself the prophet of ‘music of the future’and his vast opulently scored music dramas cast their spell over the Second Viennese school, and also Debussy, whose opera Pelléas et Melisande has a good deal of Parsifal and Tristan in its score. With Satie, it was the music of the past that was important, and he even returned to the tones of the ancient Greeks. Gymnopédies evokes the dance of children from ancient Sparta, who danced in honour of Apollo. Similarly, Gnossiennes is from the labyrinth at Knossos (Gnossos). It wasn’t all ancient Greek influences though that guided Satie’s inspiration – jazz and the music hall were potent influences

Perhaps the most idiosyncratic work he composed is Vexations. He composed it in 1893, but refused to show the score to anyone, and the premiere took place in 1963 at the instigation of John Cage. The score occupies a single page, headed ‘Page Mystique. To play this motif 840 times in succession, it will be necessary to prepare oneself in advance, in total silence, by remaining absolutely motionless.’ A complete performance thus takes 18–30 hours. Cristina Ariagno plays an excerpt.

This is part 3 of the first and only Complete Locatelli Edition ever!
Locatelli, like many of his contemporaries, moved abroad and settled in Amsterdam/The Netherlands, concertising as a violinist (and a “devil” he was as a performer!), and founding a flourishing publishing house.

Locatelli composed in the tradition of the Italian Baroque, in the well known forms of the Concerto Grosso, Solo Concerto and Trio Sonata. His style is inventive, flamboyant, and extremely virtuoso. His violin sonatas and concertos still present a daunting challenge even to today’s violinists.

Pietro Antonio Locatelli was one of the most important composers of the Baroque period, being a particularly celebrated composer of violin repertoire. His collection L’arte del violino contains 12 violin concertos with 24 caprices in the first and last movement of each, allowing for astonishing displays of virtuosity.

These are not modern arrangements of two classic violin sonatas but classic examples of the art of transcriptions, made by two superb French cellists in the last half of the 19th century. They cater less for the demand of amateur musicians for repertoire for domestic music-making – even in their originals, the sonatas lie somewhere beyond the technical level of all but the most accomplished performers – but for the growing number of professional cellists who sought more than showpieces for their recitals yet were understandably frustrated by the lack of substantial contributions to the cello repertoire by composers of their time.

The greatest Parisian cellist of his day, August Franchomme, arranged the ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata in 1867. It is among Beethoven’s most ambitious pieces of chamber music, symphonic in scale. Reportedly, the first transcription for the cello was made by Carl Czerny, at the request of Beethoven himself. However, Czerny considerably simplified the most important virtuoso passages that had made this sonata a piece for seasoned musicians. Franchomme also made certain adaptations, inevitable when transcribing a piece of this complexity for a lower instrument, but he retained its sense of thrill and danger.

This exciting German pianist continues his well-received traversal of the epitome of German Romantic music with a generously filled recital of some of Schumann’s most testing and poetic works. The Symphonic Studies fulfil their title in exploring advanced composition, bravura piano technique, unspecified scene painting and ‘character’ depiction, making a thrilling journey from ‘pathétique’ to ‘symphonic’ towards the unstoppable momentum of the extended finale.

Composer & Artist:
Composer: Alfred Schnittke
Artists: Bolshoi Theatre (Orchestra), Andrei Chistjakov (conductor)

About this Album:
In 1978 Alfred Schnittke (1934-98) wrote the incidental music for a production of The Inspector’s Tale, an adaptation for stage of Gogol’s Dead Souls. It was to have been directed by Yuri Lyubimov, but the Soviet government banned the production. A suite was assembled from the score by Gennadi Rozhdenstvensky, and two leading colleagues of Schnittke – Gubaidulina and Denisov contributed a jointly composed march, which opens this CD. In 1985 the music was choreographed, the ballet, called Esquisses was performed at the Bolshoi. Schnittke composed a number of new pieces for this production. The characters in the action are all from Gogol, but in addition to The Dead Souls, we meet Tchitchikov, Major Kovalyov’s Nose, and Ferdinand VIII from Notes of a Madman. A passage from the book is recited in his piece, and is read by the conductor on this CD.

Composer & Artist:
Composer: Béla Bartók, Nino Rota, Paul Hindemith
Artists: Il Solisti Aquilani, Flavio Emilio Scogna (conductor)

About this Album:
A rare collection of recordings featuring some of the finest examples of the neo-Classical school, this release brings together a collective of high-calibre string players and some exciting young soloists under the guidance of globally renowned conductor Flavio Emilio Scogna. Together they interpret some of the most emotionally complex and technically demanding works written for string orchestra in the 20th century.

The two Italians represented here are equally sophisticated in their treatment of the ensemble: the mysterious, macabre Allegro moderato e spiritoso gives way to the spritely, dynamic interplay of soloist and ensemble of the Rondo: Vivace con brio in Ghedini’s Concerto for violin and strings. Rota, whilst better known for his film scores, displays all the provocative simplicity and stylistic versatility of his orchestral and chamber works in his Concerto for strings; the Scherzo and Finale teem with references to European folk music. The three movements from Bartók’s Divertimento similarly contain clear allusions to Romanian folk music, but come from his more tonally grounded period, the utterly danceable Allegro non troppo and Allegro assai contrasting with the dark and moody Molto adagio. Like Bartók, Hindemith wrote his Trauermusik under the looming threat of global conflict and the composer’s music from this period demonstrates appropriately melancholic attributes. Written in only six hours after the death of King George V, the beautiful solemnity and understatement of this work is a fitting tribute both to the King and Hindemith’s style of the time.
