About this Album:
ranz Tunder (1614-1667) was born in the German city of Lübeck, where he stayed his whole life as organist and treasurer of the St. Marienkirche.
Tunder is one of the cornerstones of the North German organ school. His style is the “Stylus Phantasticus”, in which the emotional content of the text is the basis of the musical expression, using sudden harmonic changes, dissonances and tone painting.
Tunder left an oeuvre consisting of Chorale Preludes on Lutheran hymns, as well as several separate organ preludes.
Emanuele Cardi is one of the foremost Italian organists, specialized in early organs and the restoration of Baroque instruments. On this recording he plays a magnificent Ghilardi organ built in 1996, inspired by the 17th century German Arp Schnitger instruments.
Excellent liner notes written by a musicologist, as well as the complete disposition and photo of the organ are included in the booklet. Another fine issue in the Brilliant Classics series of Pre-Bachian organ masters

About this Album:
Henri Sauguet composed for many solo instruments, but writing for the guitar was where his passion lay, describing the instrument as ‘very noble’ and ‘one of the great instruments that belong to all ages’. An eclectic, prolific and original composer, Sauguet’s great gift lay in his ability to construct with just a few notes sound sketches that transcend genres, taking inspiration from a wide pool of trends. Sauguet began composing music for the guitar in 1958 with Soliloque, a vibrant, emotionally charged piece in which tonality and modality intermingle with chromaticism, and continued with the elegant harmonic solutions of Trois Préludes in 1970 and the subtle and expressive neo-modality of Musiques pour Claudel in 1973. These two suites, written to celebrate the French writer Paul Claudel, were followed by Six Pièces faciles in 1975, which was more frivolous in nature but nevertheless evocative, with memorable melodic themes. The crowning note in his guitar music writing career came with Révérence à Johann Sebastian Bach, written in 1985 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the great German composer’s birth, and Cadence, his final piece for the solo guitar written at the age of 84 and published posthumously in 1990, containing two distinct sections that intertwine, the first part mechanical and regular, the second contemplative and lyrical.

Locatelli, like many of his contemporaries, moved abroad and settled in Amsterdam/The Netherlands, concertising as a violinist (and a “devil” he was as a performer!), and founding a flourishing publishing house.

Locatelli composed in the tradition of the Italian Baroque, in the well known forms of the Concerto Grosso, Solo Concerto and Trio Sonata. His style is inventive, flamboyant, and extremely virtuoso. His violin sonatas and concertos still present a daunting challenge even to today’s violinists.

Pietro Antonio Locatelli was one of the most important composers of the Baroque period, being a particularly celebrated composer of violin repertoire. His collection L’arte del violino contains 12 violin concertos with 24 caprices in the first and last movement of each, allowing for astonishing displays of virtuosity.

In a period where in Europe piano music was in the hands of towering virtuosos like Liszt, Anton Rubinstein and later Rachmaninoff, the American scene was notably less tormented, focusing on tone painting idyllic landscapes, rural scenes and charming dance forms.
These genre pieces share the same delightful characteristics as their European pendants by Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Grieg, Gade, Sinding and others.

About this Album:
The composition dates of the two violin concertos by Hungarian composer, pianist and ethnomusicologist Béla Bartók are separated by thirty years and provide a snapshot of his creative process at vastly different points in his life.

The first concerto (1907–8) had a rare emotional relevance: it was dedicated to the violinist Stefi Geyer, the object of Bartók’s affections, and showcases different aspects of her personality. This two-movement work is reminiscent of the works of Strauss and Liszt. The lamenting theme of the first movement represents Bartók’s unrequited love for Stefi, whose theme is repeated with tonal variation. This is followed by a lively second movement, with brilliant sections of arpeggios and scales, as well as whimsical leaps.

The second concerto (1937) is from a time in the composer’s life when folk music had become a firm characteristic of his works, and explores more adventurous harmonies than the first. One of the great Classical and Romantic works, the neo-Classical concerto also contains elements of Baroque and Renaissance music, giving it an historical dimension. Highlights are the beautiful canon of the second-movement theme and the reappearance in the third movement of the theme from the first, this time in a rousing triple-time dance.

Internationally acclaimed violinist Thomas Zehetmair has enjoyed a remarkable career, performing and recording all over the world. He has also become equally sought-after as a conductor and is currently Musical Director of the Northern Sinfonia.

Valentina Levko was another in the glorious line of Russian 20th-century contraltos who in some ways defined the sound of Russian opera for ears, both Eastern and Western, which were often discovering the rich tradition of Russian opera for the first time through recordings. Levko's name, however, unlike compatriots such as Elena Obratzova, never travelled as far or as well. Committed to her contract at the Bolshoi, she spurned several opportunities to make a name for herself in the West, with the lucrative recording contracts that would surely have followed. And yet hers was, as this important set reveals, a voice and dramatic presence firmly in the mould of greats of the past such as Zara Dolukhanova.

About this Album:
Luigi Boccherini (1743–1805) is one of the major figures in 18th century music, and was close to both Haydn and Mozart. The young Austrian admired Boccherini’s music, and his string quintets in particular. Throughout his long career, Boccherini’s style was influenced by composers such as Nardini, Sammartini in his native Italy, Wagenseil and Monn from the Mannheim school, and forward looking composers from France such as Gossec. However, Boccherini was to base himself in Spain at the royal court, and found himself rather cut off from mainstream European musical trends. This caused him to develop his individual style – a mix of Spanish dance influences, and a smooth ‘Latin’ charm that led some commentators to remark that his music was effeminate, and in the words of one violinist Giuseppe Puppo, that he was ‘Haydn’s wife’. This is to miss the point of Boccherini’s style. Although less dramatic than either Haydn or Mozart, his music does have moments of explosive drama that appear all the more effective when bursting fortissimo from an otherwise calm movement. The harmonic shifts are also surprising and used to great effect. His music is sensuous, passionate and dramatic. The Op.39 Quintets date from 1787 when he was at the court of Friederich Wilhelm II in Berlin. These are important works that rank alongside the chamber music of his great Austrian contemporaries, and Boccherini deserves to be in their company.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778–1837) was a pupil of Mozart, a protégé of Haydn, a friendly rival of Beethoven, and renowned throughout Europe as one of the greatest pianists of his day, a sought-after teacher who instructed some of the most distinguished 19th-century virtuosi, the author of an influential treatise on the art of pianism, and himself the composer of over three hundred works covering all musical genres (apart from the symphony).

This 20CD Edition provides a cross-section of Hummel’s excellent, prolific and unjustly neglected output, with a large section of solo piano music including the complete sonatas and etudes and a rich selection of chamber music featuring violin, viola, cello, flute, and guitar with piano, as well as larger ensembles from piano trios to septets.

Half a bar of Carl Nielsen and you know it’s him; a characteristic of great composers down the ages, to be sure, but one peculiarly concentrated around nationalist composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nationalist, not necessarily through any political affiliation but because they sought to renew both the standard musical forms and genres, and their own country’s culture, with bold and fresh attempts to marry the two. So successful was Nielsen at this (like Sibelius in Finland), indeed, that for decades afterwards he seemed to cast a shadow over those who came after.

The symphonies lie at the centre of Nielsen’s achievement. They develop as he did, from exuberant Romanticism (No.1), through rangy melodies and ‘visionary’ slow movements (Nos. 2 and 3), to an unquenchable embrace of the heroic struggle that places Man at the centre of his world (Nos. 4 and 5), finally to rest in a quizzical re-examination of all that we hold worthwhile in mind and music (No.6, the ‘Sinfonia semplice’: never was a symphony more ironically named.)

Each symphony sets off on its own exciting journey, and the demands Nielsen makes on his participants are extreme; he was a fine violinist himself, and he used his extensive knowledge to turn string players inside out with ferocious fugues and precipitous runs. Many great orchestras have tackled this music, and some have ended up making it into little more than concertos for orchestra in all but name. Not however, this apparently less glittering ensemble. David Hurwitz, famously hard to please, is unequivocal in his Classics Today review: ‘Theodore Kuchar leads what is without question the most exciting complete Nielsen symphony cycle available, making this the set to get for Nielsen newcomers.

Bach on a saxophone? What next? Of course J.S. Bach’s music is indestructible. But some arrangements turn out far better than others and manage to do justice to the original. The transition of music for a string instrument to wind does not seem obvious, especially when a saxophone is part of the equation, but Henk van Twillert pulls it off. The baritone saxophone proves itself to be an ideal replacement of the cello. It is not only a similarity in timbre but when played by this most skilful and imaginative Dutch saxophonist the instrument becomes totally adaptable to baroque music.

So should Bach be played on a saxophone? Listen to this release and you will know the answer. It may vary from ‘why not’ to ‘definitely’!

About this Album:
It might be unusual to find classical music that manages to imbibe the spirit of Irish folk music; it must be even more unusual for that ‘Irish’ music to actually be by an Italian. But Michele Esposito was an unusual composer. Born in southern Italy, financial circumstances led him to settle abroad, and, after a brief spell in Paris, he arrived in Dublin in 1882, making Ireland his homeland for the next 46 years. His time there coincided with the Irish cultural revival that was taking place during the latter half of the 19th century, leading Esposito to find a place at the heart of several prominent cultural institutions.

One of these institutions was the Feis Ceoil, the Irish competitive music festival, at which Esposito won first prize for his Irish Rhapsody No.2 Op.54 in 1902. Folk music also inspired his Irish symphonies, for which he is well known, as well as the simple yet highly effective airs and melodies featured on this release. The three violin sonatas all stem from very different periods of the composer’s life; the first contains elements of Schumannesque piano writing in the third movement, as well as clear echoes of Saint-Saëns, whereas the second – more technically advanced – is more akin to the music of Brahms. Esposito’s last violin sonata, composed in 1913, is tonally much more experimental, and structured in a highly unconventional manner, with the Scherzo movement a slow and solemn minuet, concluding in an unusual sonata form.

Mily Balakirev (1837-1910) was the founder of the group of Russian composers called ‘The Mighty Handful’. Together with Borodin, Rimsky Korsakov, Cui and Mussorgsky he helped create a distinctive Russian school of music that was not reliant on the influence of the Austro German school.
Studying at the St Petersburg Conservatoire, he won the praise of Glinka, and had an influence on the young Tchaikovsky. He wrote two symphonies, two piano concertos, several symphonic poems and many piano works.
On these 6CDs his entire output for piano can be found. A superb pianist, he produced one of the most taxing works ever written for the instrument, his Oriental Fantasy Islamey. His piano sonata is no less impressive, and the Seven Mazurkas are wonderfully melodic works. There is much to discover on these discs.

Sadly, Balakirev suffered a complete nervous breakdown in 1871, and he withdrew from life, eventually emerging to take up a minor management role on the railways. In 1876 he began to compose again, and in 1883 was appointed as director of the Imperial Chapel. He retired in 1895, and continued composing, but by now considered old fashioned and was forgotten even by his old friends. However, one young composer, Igor Stravinsky had a soft spot for him, and pitied him as he suffered from bouts of depression.

Charles Koechlin, music theorist as well as composer, was a significant figure in the vibrant early 20th century whirl of Parisian culture. After studying under as Jules Massenet and Gabriel Fauré, the latter being an enormous influence on his music, Koechlin co-founded the Société musicale indépendante in 1909 and many years later became president of the Féderation Musicale Populaire. Starstruck by Hollywood, Koechlin often found inspiration in its legendary figures and dedicated many pieces to actresses such as Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow and Lilian Harvey.

Koechlin’s compositional style contains elements of impressionism, and his developing interest in the saxophone can be closely linked to his enthusiasm for 1930s cinema. Twenty years later, the publication of his Traité de l’orchestration, in which he praised the saxophone for its sonority and agility, coincided with that of a set of 15 studies for the instrument. These studies, of varying length and character, feature in this collection, alongside works such as the Deux Sonatinas, Septuor pour instruments à Vent, and the celebrated Epitaphe pour Jean Harlow.

Formed in 2001 by David Brutti and Filippo Farinelli, the Duo Disecheis explores 20th-century and contemporary chamber music. Having performed at many prestigious festivals and venues throughout Europe, the duo has achieved enormous success in international competitions and has collaborated with composers such as Paolo Baioni, Stefano Trevisi and Dimitri Nicolau. Joining the duo on this recording is the Atem Saxophone Quartet, which has received critical acclaim for its performances at numerous chamber music and jazz festivals.

One of the giants of the historically informed performance world needs little introduction; nor indeed his sympathy to Mozart’s oeuvre as already demonstrated in recordings of the three da Ponte operas that have met with wide acclaim and many awards for their closely observed intimacy, their sense of fun and drama and their well-chosen casts, at one with Kuijken’s vision of these jewels of human and music drama.

His recording of Mozart’s magical last opera, however, has not received wide availability until now, in its appearance as part of Brilliant Classics’s comprehensive Opera Collection. The recording was made live at the Notre-Dame Church in Beaune, in France, in 2004. The cast is highly recognisable from many other fine productions of Baroque and early music, including Suzie LeBlanc (Pamina); Cornelius Hauptmann (Tamino); Stephan Genz (Papageno) and Isolde Siebert (Queen of Night).

Of course the orchestral contribution to this recording is no less distinguished: La Petite Bande features the cream of Continental period-instrument musicians, and is led by Kuijken himself, a violinist as much at home in Mozart’s world as he is in Bach’s.

The most famous scion of a musical family which stretched across at least ten generations, Johann Sebastian Bach had a very strong sense of history, tradition, and his evolving place in it, and was instrumental in curating and adding to the library of the music of the Bachs, which was known as the Altbachisches Archiv. This archive mostly comprises vocal music; now the Italian organist has created a fascinating instrumental counterpart, with short organ works by ten members of the family ranging from Heinrich Bach (1615–1692) to Wilhelm Friedemann Ernst Bach (1779–1845). About this Album:
Sacred music occupied an important role in 16th-century Spain, but there is much evidence that secular vocal polyphony held a place in society too. Such music is to be found in the little-known Juan Vázquez’s Recopilación which dates from around 1560; as well as canciones and soneto-madrigals, the collection includes various villancicos – the main focus of this recording – then a popular style of song and which Vázquez clearly overhauled through replacing endless repetition with melodic and rhythmic variety. That Vázquez’s contribution to the genre was both popular and significant (he wrote over 90 in total, most of which were set to texts by leading Spanish poets of the day) is demonstrated by the many later arrangements of his villancicos for vocal soloists with vihuela accompaniment.

Performing these highly engaging, deftly written works are the Dutch vocal group Quink, founded in 1978 and ranking among the world’s best a cappella ensembles. The recording, which can only serve to increase our appreciation for this largely-forgotten composer, underlines the group’s astonishing variety of tonal colour – of their Benjamin Britten CD, the New York Times drew attention to Quink’s ‘elegant phrasing, impeccable intonation and a purity of tone reminiscent of Renaissance madrigals.’

Little is known about the life of Spanish composer Juan Vasquez (fl. 16th century). A skilled and successful composer in the service of the King of Spain. His compositions are mainly secular, in the form of polyphonic madrigals and ‘Villancicos’, popular songs set for a vocal ensemble of 4 or 5 voices. The madrigals are on poetic texts by well known poets like Boscan and Garcilaso. The Villancicos are based on folk music and traditional texts, music brimming with joy, happiness and Spanish vitality!
