In this 45-minute presentation Alex Himmel, Wilson Fellow at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, explains how neutrinos might provide the answers to many questions that scientists have about the universe. The neutrino is a type of subatomic particle. They are produced in copious quantities by celestial objects -- trillions of neutrinos from the sun will pass through your body while you read this sentence -- but they interact so rarely with other particles that only a handful will strike an atom in your body during your entire life. Yet these benign little particles can tell us about some of the most energetic processes in the universe. In order to detect these elusive particles, scientists build enormous particle detectors deep underground, using tanks full of liquid argon in an old gold mine as well as a cubic kilometer of Antarctic ice. In this talk Himmel works his way from the sun to galactic supernovae to the possible extragalactic sources of the highest-energy neutrinos ever observed. Himmel also answers audience questions from members of the Naperville Astronomical Association.
Why I Love Neutrinos is a series spotlighting those mysterious, abundant, ghostly particles that are all around us. This installment features Professor Josh Klein of the University of Pennsylvania. For more information on neutrinos, visit the Fermilab website at http://www.fnal.gov.

Scientists, engineers and technicians are preparing for the assembly of a 15,000-ton neutrino detector in Ash River, Minnesota.
They gather at Fermilab to test a very large, critical piece of equipment that will be used in the assembly of this detector
This clip shows the "Miss Katie" pushing the muon g-2 ring upstream on the Illinois River, and passing through the Peoria Lock and Dam as it travels toward Lemont, where it will be unloaded onto the special Emmert transporter and driven to Fermilab.
Scientist Craig Moore talks about a small fix in an accelerator that paid big dividends for the Tevatron program in the 1990s.
Fermilab's fourth annual Physics Slam, held on Nov. 20, 2015, featured five physicists vying to explain their area of study in the most entertaining way possible. Contestants included 9:28 Brian Ingram, 20:10 Brad Benson, 32:52 Cindy Joe, 43:50 Steve Nahn and 54:39 Chris Marshall, and the event was hosted by Chris Miller of the College of DuPage. Marge Bardeen, educator and former head of the Fermilab Education Office, tells the story of how a number of people dedicated to science education started the lab's first education initiatives.
U.S. scientists at Fermilab celebrate the official start of LHC Run II and discuss what they hope to find at a higher energy and increased intensity.

On Thursday, May 9, 2013, Fermilab invited elected officials and leaders from local communities to hear Director Pier Oddone lay out his vision of the laboratory's future. The presentation was held in Wilson Hall, and included both short-term (NOvA, Muon g-2) and long-term (LBNE, Project X) experiments, as well as an overall look at the direction of the laboratory's impact on Chicagoland. For further information on these projects see www.fnal.gov, http://www-nova.fnal.gov, http://muon-g2.fnal.gov, darkenergysurvey.org, http://lbne.fnal.gov, http://projectx.fnal.gov
The discovery of the Higgs boson was an international endeavor, involving thousands of physicists from across the world. While the accelerator at which the experimental work was done is located on Europe, the US supplied more physicists than any other single country. America had a very large role in the discovery of the Higgs particle and continues to have a leading role in the ongoing studies of the boson's properties. This video describes some of the contributions of U.S. universities and laboratories.
Fermilab recently hosted more than 300 middle school students from 13 schools for a special showing of Hidden Figures and a panel discussion with four Fermilab scientists, including Maurice Ball. This video was played as part of the panel introductions.
Less than 15 percent of bachelor’s degrees in engineering, math, physics and astronomy are awarded each year to underrepresented minorities, according to the American Physical Society. Students who are underrepresented minorities or are economically disadvantaged may lack exposure to science and guidance from mentors to encourage them to nurture their interest in STEM. The event was aimed at showing students scientists and engineers at Fermilab similar to them, and removing the mystery surrounding their nearby particle physics lab. The goal of the program was to show fifth- to eighth-grade students that entering a STEM field was possible for them – no matter their background. You can read more about the event here: http://news.fnal.gov/2018/02/f....ermilab-organizes-hi
As a minority student, Maurice Ball faced challenges in his college engineering courses and, overcoming them, found himself taking on different, surprising and exciting challenges as an engineer at Fermilab. Learn what he'd tell his younger high school and college self if he could.
LBNF/DUNE is an international mega-science project hosted by the Department of Energy’s Fermilab. http://www.fnal.gov/dune It will send a beam of tiny particles called neutrinos 1,300 kilometers straight through the earth from Fermilab to the Sanford Underground Research Facility. It will help solve some of the deepest mysteries of the universe and boost innovation while training young people around the world in science, engineering and computing. Scientists and engineers at universities and laboratories are working hand-in-hand with companies to design electronics, build hardware and develop computer programs for the project. LBNF and DUNE will create jobs as well as demand for materials, products and services. Students in dozens of countries around the world will start their careers in science and engineering with this project, and then transfer their knowledge into industry, medicine, computer science and many other fields.

CLOSING 12 TIPS:
One: When it comes to someone talking, sound is more important than visuals.
Two: Don't use the camera mic unless absolutely necessary.
Three: You spent a crap ton of money of camera gear, time to spend some money on sound.
Four: Get a good audio recorder.
Five: Get a good mic that meets your needs.
Six: Get that mic as close to the person's mouth as possible.
Seven: Garbage audio recording sucks, get great audio up front.
Eight: Set your sound levels, record something, check it, adjust as needed.
Nine: Put on a pair of headphones and listen for bad stuff like AC or refrigerators running.
Ten: Slate, clap, or snap your fingers everytime you hit record.
Eleven: Play with an audio editor and see if you can sweeten up your audio.
Twelve: Don't be lazy, use an audio recorder, bring your audio into your editor, and take the extra 30 seconds to sync up your sound.
