Jeroen van Veen’s recordings of Minimalist piano music have received critical acclaim while also reaching a wide and receptive audience. Previous albums of Satie (BC94768), Einaudi (BC9452), Glass (BC9519), Riley (BC95217) and much more are now joined by the music of Michael Nyman, who may not have invented the genre as Satie did, but was the first to bring Glass, Reich and their contemporaries to wider attention and coin the term Minimalism to describe the way that they rebelled against European modernism and returned to a stripped-back tonality in ways that meshed with popular music of the time.

Michael Nyman (born 1944) is one of the most famous and successful film music composers of our time. His music, although inextricably connected with the visual action of a film, has the quality to stand on its own, to evoke and express the visual emotions in sounds only.

Nyman’s most famous film score is of the film “The Piano” , becoming an instant hit. Its openness and its deceptively simple musical lines appealed to a mass audience.
The music featured on this recording is either originally written for piano or arranged by the composer himself.
Minimal Music champion Jeroen van Veen has been fascinated by Nyman’s music his whole life, and the recording of it was a logical step. He is the ideal interpreter of this seductive, mind opening music.

Georg Philipp Telemann was a contemporary of J.S. Bach. In Telemann’s music, however, one can detect a sense of humour far more often than in Bach’s work. At the time Tafelmusik immediately was a great success, and today it is still really appreciated. On release a selection played by Musica Amphion under Pieter-Jan Belder.

The two opus-numbered quartets of Max Bruch were first recorded only in 1993 by an Italian ensemble, and the recognised expertise of the Diogenes Quartet in music of this style and era makes their new recording the obvious first choice, but their album is further enhanced by the inclusion of a C minor quartet which was rediscovered as recently as 2013, in a box in the archives of the Mozart-Stiftung in Frankfurt. Further research revealed that this was an unpublished work by Bruch, composed in 1852 at the age of 14, in application for a scholarship from the foundation. Louis Spohr, in approving the application, was fulsome in his praise: ‘I am very interested to learn more about him, as I prophesy a brilliant career for him.’
This youthful effort is clearly influenced by the estimable models of Beethoven and Schubert, but its composer’s melodic gift is already revealed by the slow movement, an enchanting Notturno of great expressive strength. This is a subtle, finely balanced movement, woven with precocious sophistication by the teenage Bruch into an intricate fabric of voices, which cushions the sensitive melody, as it were, on a bed of roses. Four years later – and still only 18 – he referred back to elements of the quartet in his first acknowledged work in the genre, designated Op.9
This CD contains a World Premiere! The C minor Quartet by Max Bruch.
In 2013 an unknown quartet was discovered in the archives of the Mozart-Stiftung in Frankfurt, further research made it clear it was by the 14-year old Max Bruch! This fresh and spontaneous youth work clearly has its roots in the romantic tradition going back to Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Schumann.
The well known String Quartets Op.9 and Op.10 are vintage Bruch: although not revolutionary in any sense, they abound in catchy romantic melodies, the warm sonorities and harmonies adding to the feel-good atmosphere.
Excellent performances by the German Diogenes Quartet, who already recorded successfully for Brilliant Classics works by Gernsheim and a complete Schubert cycle.
Scholarly liner notes in both English and German are included in the booklet.

These days Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is mainly associated with his later works. Born in 1935 he wrote ‘avant-garde’ works at first. In the nineteen seventies he increasingly found his inspiration in medieval religious music, both western and eastern European. This first transpired in his Für Alina for piano. It already has the telling low tempo and (two) layers. Pärt further extended his so-called tintinnabuli (i.e. bells) style in small-scale pieces like the different versions of Spiegel im Spiegel and Variationen zur Gesundung von Arinuschka. Although this last piece has ‘classical’ features as well.

This release shows an aspect of Arvo Pärt which is seldomly heard: his small-scale chamber music works. As such this recording is a valuable addition to the material already available on the market.

Described by the composer himself as ‘the king of instruments’, the organ and its music form a small but not insignificant part of Mozart’s vast œuvre. This new release, performed by acclaimed Italian organist Ivan Ronda, comprises all of his major works for the instrument, including the extended Adagio and Rondo in C minor and the small-scale works from the London Sketchbook. Also included is the charming Adagio in C for the glass harmonica: just 28 bars in length, the work was originally conceived for this curious instrument, which consists of glass bowls that rotate in water, but is equally effective on the organ. Mozart’s output of Church Sonatas – notable for their single movement form – are represented here by the Sonata in C K336, the only one to have a proper solo part for the organ, and was specially transcribed by André Isoir for this recording.

The disc is rounded off with the imposing Fantasia in F minor. Described in Mozart’s own catalogue of work as ‘an organ piece for a clock’, it was commissioned by Count Joseph Deym for a musical automaton that contained a small pipe organ. When transferred to an organ on the scale of that at the Church of Maria Vergine Immacolata in Gallo Cavour, Italy, where this recording was made, it takes on a certain grandeur, and exploits the various echo and dialogue effects of the instrument.

Composer: Baldassare Galuppi
Artist: Ensemble StilModerno

No score survives for the seven ‘Concerti a quattro’ recorded here: they are preserved only in a set of manuscript parts in Modena’s BibliotecaEstense. They may not have belonged together as a set, given their diversity of style, but together they present a most attractive compilation of a personal voice at a turning point in musical history around the beginning of the 18th century.

Galuppi took the best of both worlds: the solid counterpoint of his teachers (Lotti and Marcello) and the vivid innovations of the younger generation such as Vincenzo Manfredini, presently made famous by Cecilia Bartoli’s Barock adventures into hitherto unknown vocal repertoire, but also long famous as one of the founding fathers of the string quartet. Nonetheless, we can be sure that Galuppi did not intend to write for string quartet: the basso part is still a continuo part, because a few numbers are still present in figured bass; here and there are also written notes such as ‘violoncello solo’.

In some of them the style is simple, with the typical structure of the opera symphony (a French-style overture followed by a dance movement). Elsewhere, Galuppi conceives larger forms: both the C minor and G minor works open with highly affecting, chromatically inflected slow introductions full of aching suspensions. In this recording, the continuo part is provided by a chamber organ.

Founded in 2005 and this year celebrating its tenth anniversary, Ensemble StilModerno’s discography includes the Sinfonie Op.5 by Giovanni Battista Bassani (BC94259), a disc of which MusicWeb International’s reviewer remarked: "Ensemble StilModerno is thoroughly at home in the idiom. The instrumental interplay is perfectly judged though their performance is clearly thoroughly informed by a knowledge of baroque practice. They choose to play on modern instruments. Only those who care more about authenticity than about music will be troubled by their choice. Anyone who loves the instrumental music of this period is urged to hear this."

Composers: Aram Ilyich Khachaturian
Artists: Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra, Evgeny Svetlanov (conductor)

Along with Shostakovich and Prokofiev, Khachaturian was one of the most famous and celebrated composers of the Soviet Union. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, his earliest musical influences were the folk music of Georgia and of his ancestral homeland, Armenia. His ballet Gayaneh, composed in 1942, tapped into this passion for his Armenian heritage; set on a collective farm, its story is concerned with the triumph of love and loyalty to the Motherland over treason – themes that would keep Stalin happy. Khachaturian’s later ballet Spartacus, written in 1956, took the famous story of the Greek slave turned gladiator and his defeat of the Roman general Crassus as its basis. Composed in the dying years of Stalin’s rule, Khachaturian and his audiences were drawn to the story’s theme of resistance against tyranny.

Several movements from these ballets have taken on a life outside the original ballet suites – for example, the Sabre Dance from Gayaneh and the famous Adagio from Spartacus – ensuring that these wonderful and colourfully scored ballet suites have become firm favourites in the concert hall.

‘The Bolshoi orchestra are obviously completely at home in this repertoire, and Svetlanov’s ear for orchestral detail is as sure as ever. How beautifully he handles the tapering down at the end of the ‘Dance of the Nymphs’ (from Spartacas), while the opening of the ‘Dance of the Young Girls of Gadès’ brings a slow, subtle crescendo… The famous ‘Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia’ has never sounded more touchingly refined on record and the climax does not disappoint. In Gayaneh there is a beguilingly sinuous sophistication in ‘Ayesha’s dance’, and the ‘Lullaby’ and ‘Gayeneh’s Adagio’ are beautifully played, creating much delicacy of texture.’ Gramophone.

Having traversed the spectacular and princely court-music of Barock Salzburg, the trumpeter Otto Sauter turns to Vienna with another two-disc survey of rare trumpet concertos and festive serenatas. Fux and Schmelzer will be familiar names to lovers of the music of Bach’s forebears, but who has heard the bright and charming compositions of Georg Reutter (father and son), or of Franz Querfurth? These composers tended to look more towards Italy for inspiration than the Bohemian influence to be heard in Salzburg-based composers of the time, and their works are accordingly no less virtuosic and perhaps even more extrovert.

Whilst playing and teaching the trumpet the world over, Otto Sauter is also a horse-breeder of distinction: his form in this musical genre can lead listeners to expect performances of rare pedigree.

Here perhaps is the very heart of Bach; a very palpable demonstration of his heritage and impact. Bach revered his forebears, while at the same time wishing to renew their legacy – both that of his own, already notable Bach family and of their musical contemporaries – and leave a mark on posterity. His endless inventiveness in taking the old hymn tunes devised in the generations before him, and clothing them in rich and strange harmonies, each one tailored to the specific text and mood of its content, creates a box of small wonders.

This new CD presents the complete String Sinfonias by Alessandro Stradella, a First Recording!
The music by Alessandro Stradella (1639‐1682) is gaining rapidly in recognition and popularity. The composer’s extremely adventurous life (he was an aristocratic lady-killer, who himself was murdered in the end by a revengeful rival) and his equally adventurous music presents a forceful image of a fascinating and important figure of the Italian Baroque.
Stradella’s String Sinfonias are dramatic works, frequently used by the composer as an overture for his operas and cantatas. The sudden and extreme mood shifts and the expression of deep human emotions show a composer of dramatic genius.
Francesco Cera is one of Italy’s foremost Early Music musicians. As a cembalist and conductor he built an impressive discography, for Brilliant Classics he recorded works by Trabaci, d’Anglebert, Scarlatti and Bach.

In May 2014 the Hungarian cellist István Várdai performed three Bach Suites at an unusual venue in New York: not the storied glamour of Carnegie Hall or the hip 92st St Y, but the Board of Officers Room in the recently renovated Armory on Park Avenue, a room no less redolent of distinguished history: to which he made his own distinguished contribution according to the New York Times, with a recital which concluded with a ‘superb’ performance of the Sixth Suite.
Bach’s iconic solo suites form the pinnacle of the entire cello repertoire, the ultimate challenge and a Mount Everest every young and aspiring cellist has to climb, no matter how often that has already been done.
Young Hungarian cellist István Várdai is winner of the Geneva Competition, 3rd prize Tchaikovsky Competition 2007 and first prize winner of the prestigious ARD competition in 2014. He embarked on a successful international career, having played with Mikhael Pletnev, Adám Fischer, Zoltán Kocsis, and chamber music partner of Gidon Kremer, Mischa Maisky, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Andras Schiff, Klára Würtz and many others.

John Field, inventor of the Nocturne. That is all most people know about this remarkable and influential Irish composer. Born in 1782 in Dublin, he became one of the most celebrated pianist-composers of the early-Romantic age. Admired by his contemporaries Hummel, Moscheles and Kalkbrenner, he also drew praise from Chopin (upon whose music he exerted a huge influence) and Schumann.

Composers: Cornelis Schuyt, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck
Artist: Matthias Havinga

This attractive collection brings together organ music from the Dutch Golden Age; a period of great prosperity and power for the Republic of the Netherlands. During this era culture blossomed, with art, particularly painting and music, reaching a hitherto unknown level of refinement as exemplified in the works of Rembrandt and Sweelinck, among others.

Cities of the Republic were centers of power, and the position of city organist was one of great prestige, as he was essentially responsible for coordinating local musical culture. His musical adaptability led him to compose in all manner of forms, as can be heard on this release – which effectively offers a postcard from the Dutch Golden Age through its variety of compositions: psalm arrangements, fantasias, dances and secular songs. As arguably the greatest Dutch composer of all time, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck’s music is a particularly prominent feature of the disc. Of his contrasting variation sets, many were based on secular songs (whose subjects range widely): More Palatino is a bawdy drinking song and Mein junges Leben hat ein End a melancholic melody in the ‘vanitas’ style, linking closely to popular themes in paintings of the time. Of the musical psalm settings for the organ, which were used to accompany the singing of a massed congregation and also performed during public “concerts” while people wandered through the church in great numbers, Anthoni van Noordt’s setting of Psalm 24 is particularly notable, beginning soberly, featuring an adventurous, expressive second variation, and ending grandly with the melody in the pedal. The Faber/Blank organ of the Jacobuskerk,

Zeerijp, is well suited to the repertoire; dating from 1651, it was reconstructed to its original condition in 1979. In the hands of Matthias Havinga, who has won prizes at various international organ competitions and performed extensively in many European countries and in the USA, it is essential in recreating the sound world of the music as closely as possible.

This beautiful programme, recorded in 2014, brings us back to the Golden Age of the Netherlands, the 16th and 17th century, in which cultural life blossomed thanks to the economical prosperity brought by the overseas trade. Wealthy merchants commissioned works by artists like Rembrandt, Vermeer, Ruischdael and others. Also musical life flourished, and musicians from all over Europe came to hear and study with Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. Organist Matthias Havinga selected a beautiful bouquet of works by Dutch composers: Sweelinck, Van Noordt, Schuyt, Havingha (an ancient ancestor of the artist..?) and others.

Composer: Moritz Moszkowski
Artists: Domenico Monaco/Michele Solimando (piano 4 hands)

This collection of duets by Moritz Moszkowski, a German pianist and composer of Polish descent, astonishes in its range and variety. From the spirited Polish Folk Dances, via the elegant Deutsche Reigen or the virtuoso Tarantelle from the Klavierstücke, to the distinctive and exotic sound of the Spanish Dances for which Moszkowski was best known, every disc in the set reveals a new aspect of the composer’s craft. The influences are varied too, as the composer tips his hat to musical traditions from a range of countries including Hungary, Russia, Spain, his native Germany, and the Poland of his ancestors. This interest in styles characteristic of different countries is most clearly showcased in his Aus aller Herren Ländern (From Foreign Parts), a set that is both engaging and – of course – full of variety.

Italian pianists Domenico Monaco and Michele Solimando appear here for the first time on Brilliant Classics. Both have received many prestigious awards, including prizes in international competitions such as ‘P. Badura Skoda’ at Villa Seca (Spain), and enjoy busy performing careers alongside their regular teaching.
