I was looking at the Saramonic website and saw this SmartRig thing. It's $22, and says you can connect your XLR mic to a phone. I thought that was crazy, so I checked it out. I also have a tip at the end when you can't find the holes on your phone.

READ THIS: I'm trying to figure out how to get anyone interested on the creation of a single video, and I need your ideas on how to do this. If we can make this work, I think it would be awesome, everyone would learn a lot, and the result would be a lot of fun. The biggest hurdle will be the participation, the follow through, getting agreement on what to do (and not bailing just because you wanted something else), and how to manage all those so everyone has input. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.

Update: The message from foreign speaking people is this doesn't work well, and they prefer English as it helps them learn the language. Who knew?
Maybe you already provide subtitles, but how about translated video titles and descriptions? In this video I show step-by-step instructions. This helps foreign language viewers find your videos, and opens up a wider audience - even to people from other planets - no joke (see the end of the video).

This is the part one video, where I look at the Saramonic SR VRM1 XLR on mic audio recorder. I saw this unit when I was interviewing Jade from Saramonic at NAB. With this unit, and the other one mentioned in the video (which will be part two), this gives video creators an all-around solution to shooting video without having to worry about recorders and cables. I found the unit of great build quality, simple to use, convenient, and a great way to record everything like dialogue scenes, sound effects, instructional videos and more, without having to deal with cable runs and electricity. If this would work for your videos, I highly recommend it.

I have some cost comparable Rode mics sitting around and got curious...which of these sounds the best? Here's what I compared (I didn't compare the NTG-3 as it's almost THREE times the price and not a fair comparison):

You want to buy a good mic, but how do you compare what a good mic vs a bad mic is so you get the best one for your money? That's answered by the basics of microphones. In this video, you'll learn how they work, what the different types of mics are, and we'll demystify the industry lingo. You'll also gain an ability to read polar patterns, frequency charts, understand impedance, and finally be able to compare microphones in your price range and know what you are spending your money on.
