The “Kojiki and The Universe” film merges Kitaro’s Grammy nominated music from his album “Kojiki" with space-age photographic scenes of the Universe. It was created by Kitaro in collaboration with Astronomy Professor Kazunari Shibata. The film features time-lapse images, expertly intertwined with real-time footage provided by and in cooperation with NASA and Kyoto University.

In Japanese mythology, Kojiki is a story closely related to the evolution of the universe, describing the origin of Heaven, Earth and the creation of the Gods.

The “Kojiki and The Universe” film is a chronicle of astronomical research as well as a beautiful introduction to modern astronomy for everyone.

Gaia Onbashira is a musical exploration of respect and how it relates to ancient traditions. Gaia loosely translates to Goddess of the Earth or Mother Earth and Onbashira is a festival that occurs every seven years in Japan. During the Onbashira festival, eight individuals are chosen for spiritually cleansing. The participants ascend a mountain and attempt to spiritually connect with the heavens through the trees. These trees are then allowed to fall down the mountain and eventually become posts and the foundation of a ceremonial shrine. Through these events, these individuals learn to become more in touch with their spirits.

Volume four of the Celestial Scenery compilation, Eternal Trip, is fresh on iTunes with a bit more aplomb than prior albums, also with smidge of chorus line and a does of flute. If people really can astral travel, this is probably what the soundtrack would be like if they could plug their brains into a speaker system. You can hear Eternal Trip move around from its familiar, comfortable New Age sound to exploring more drumbeat rhythms. The 442nd Infantry Regiment was a segregated unit formed by the United States Military.  This U.S. Army regiment, composed mainly of Japanese American soldiers, became one of the most decorated units for its size and length of service in the history of the United States Military. Due to their exceptional combat records and the high number of casualties, they were nicknamed the "Purple Heart Battalion."  442, Extreme Patriots of WWII is a film about the 100th Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team who were first seen as the problem, but later proved to be the problem-solvers.  It's a story of the 442 veterans, their struggle and their victories as American soldiers and civilians.

I have been working with Catalyst on ABC1 to bring some Veritasium to Australian TV. In this segment I ask why astronauts in the space station are weightless. The most common answer is because there is no gravity in space. But of course there is gravity in space, especially where the space station is located (only about 400km from Earth's surface). So astronauts still experience a gravitational pull - it's just that they and the space station are in free fall so they are accelerating together towards the Earth. The space station doesn't crash into the Earth because of its orbital velocity - it's going 28,000 km/h so as it falls, the Earth curves away from it.

What happens when single photons of light pass through a double slit and are detected by a photomultiplier tube? In 1801 Thomas Young seemed to settle a long-running debate about the nature of light with his double slit experiment. He demonstrated that light passing through two slits creates patterns like water waves, with the implication that it must be a wave phenomenon.

However, experimental results in the early 1900s found that light energy is not smoothly distributed as in a classical wave, rather it comes in discrete packets, called quanta and later photons. These are indivisible particles of light. So what would happen if individual photons passed through a double slit? Would they make a pattern like waves or like particles?

Are you heaviest at night before you go to bed and lightest in the morning? I tried to tease out the factors to figure out what really causes weight gain and loss during the day, and what causes daily weight fluctuations.

In 2018 the kg will be defined by Planck's constant, not a hunk of metal.

I have been obsessed with measurement for a long time and I'm not sure quite how it happened. The world's roundest object played a role in this. I guess I'm just fascinated by how difficult it is to pin down a quantity like a kilogram. A physical object seemed like a good idea until the mass of the international prototype kilogram wasn't as constant as expected. In this video I attempt to lift a 19kg (42 lbs) wheel over my head one-handed while it's spinning at a few thousand RPM. This replicates an earlier experiment by Professor Eric Laithwaite. He claimed the wheel was 'light as a feather' and could not be explained by Newton's Laws. I wanted to find out for myself what I really felt like.

I'm filming a documentary for TV about how Uranium and radioactivity have shaped the modern world. It will be broadcast in mid-2015, details to come. The filming took me to the most radioactive places on Earth (and some places, which surprisingly aren't as radioactive as you'd think). Chernobyl and Fukushima were incredible to see as they present post-apocalyptic landscapes. I also visited nuclear power plants, research reactors, Marie Curie's institute, Einstein's apartment, nuclear medicine areas of hospitals, uranium mines, nuclear bomb sites, and interviewed numerous experts.

Notes about measuring radiation:
Sieverts are a measure of 'effective dose' - that means they measure the biological impact of the energy transferred to tissues from radiation.

Obviously I owe a debt to the fantastic chart made by xkcd, which inspired my visual approach to this video.

The level of radiation varies widely around the world depending mainly on altitude and geology (excluding nuclear accidents).

Estimates of particular doses also vary. All numbers reported in this video should be taken as order of magnitude only.

The most contentious claim may be that smokers receive the highest dose of ionizing radiation. This is not a whole body dose, but a dose to the lungs as specified in the video. References are here:
