Is a flame really a plasma? Well it depends on your definition of plasma, but there are certainly ions in a flame, formed as molecules collide with each other at high speed, sometimes knocking electrons off of their atoms.
Special thanks to the Palais de la Decouverte for helping me perform this experiment. Using tens of thousands of volts on two metal plates, we created a strong electric field around the plasma. This pulled positive ions in one direction and negative ions in the other direction elongating the flame horizontally and causing it to flicker like a "papillon" (butterfly). Then we showed that much longer sparks can be made through the flame than through air since the ions increase the conductivity.
Is punishment or reward more effective as feedback? Do new medical treatments really work? What about streaks in sport? Without considering regression to the mean, we are prone to making significant errors.

Is punishment or reward more effective for helping people learn. A lot of people would say different incentives motivate different people, or in different circumstances, but in psychology there is a sizable body of evidence that in order to learn skills, positive feedback is more effective. This fining has been verified not just with humans, but also with other species.
It was strange then that after Daniel Kahneman discussed this research with Israeli fighter pilot instructors that he was met with resistance. They found the opposite was true: when they reprimanded a cadet for performing poorly, he invariably improved, but if they praised a cadet for an excellent performance, the next attempt was not as good. In order to solve this apparent contradiction we first need to understand regression to the mean.

Afortunadamente el 10 de abril de 2019 tuvimos la oportunidad de ver la primera foto de un agujero negro supermasivo en la galaxia M87 con una masa de 6.5 mil millones de veces la de nuestro sol. Esto fue posible gracias al increíble trabajo del equipo del proyecto colaborativo del Telescopio Event Horizon.

Por otro lado el 22 de noviembre del 2014 se detectó una explosión de rayos X a través del sistema ASASSN. Lo que presenciamos fue cómo un agujero negro devoró a una estrella.
Un agujero negro pulsante en el centro de una galaxia distante esclarece un poco más nuestro conocimiento sobre los agujeros negros y la formación de galaxias.

Estuvimos dando vueltas por Pripyat, la ciudad que se encuentra al norte Ucrania en la región de Kiev. Esta se convirtió en una ciudad fantasma luego de sufrir los efectos de uno de lo peores accidentes nucleares de la historia, cuando explotó el reactor número 4 en la central nuclear de Chernobyl el 26 de abril 1986.

He querido hacer un video sobre el estornudo del sol durante mucho tiempo. Es algo que he experimentado toda mi vida. Cuando salgo de una habitación oscura al interior de la luz del sol, invariablemente estornudo. Pensé que todos lo hacían. Así que mi pregunta original era ¿por qué la gente estornuda cuando ve una luz brillante? Eso me llevó a considerar qué posibles ventajas evolutivas podría haber al estornudar a la luz del sol. La ventaja obvia para mí es que la luz solar mata los agentes patógenos de los cuales puede haber muchos en tus mocos. Así que estornudar al sol es una idea mucho mejor que estornudar dentro de una cueva oscura y húmeda donde podrías estar viviendo.

¿Será este el último video que hago sobre las unidades del Sistema Internacional?
Muy posiblemente. Hay algo acerca de ser tan precisos y definir los sistemas dentro de los cuales funciona la ciencia, que me atrae mucho. Cuando podemos medir de forma más precisa y rutinaria un kilogramo, un mol, un kelvin y un ampere, entonces podemos hacer mejores observaciones, podemos detectar mejor las anomalías y mejorar nuestras teorías. Por eso es tan importante para mí. Así que aquí les presentamos la nueva definición del kilogramo.
