Erik Bosgraaf is an established Brilliant Classics artist whose recordings span the centuries. His previous release was of Pierre
Boulez, a recording of Dialogue de l’ombre double (BC94842) that won warm critical opinions such as this from Gramophone:
‘Balance between recorders and electronics is ideally judged, giving this music an immediacy yet also intimacy beyond that of
any other recorded option.’
In his latest recording, he brings these same qualities (minus the electronics) to the music of Telemann, who as a player of the
instrument lavished particularly rich treasures upon it, even considering a total output of over 3000 separate works. Bosgraaf has made a personal selection of sonatas from various chamber music collections which Telemann made throughout his career such as the Musique de table, Essercizii musicali and Der getreue
Music‐meister, especially during the latter stages of his career when he was still producing music with a phenomenal industry not least due to the need to recoup his wife’s enormous gambling debts. The result is something of a love‐letter to the recorder, celebrating its qualities of agility and songfulness, full of syncopated quick movements, Italianate arias and taking in both arcane technical devices such as canons as well as simple folk tunes from Poland. Bosgraaf plays a wide selection of recorders to match the breadth of Telemann’s invention. The harpsichord used is a Mietke model by Bruce Kennedy. This release should join an acclaimed version of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons (BC94637) as one of the most popular items in the ever‐growing discography of this exciting young recorder virtuoso.

Accepted onto the early admissions programme of the University of Chicago, Philip Glass graduated aged just nineteen with a degree in Mathematics and Philosophy, practising the piano in his spare time. Subsequently studying at the Juilliard School, Glass’s name has since become synonymous with the minimalist style. His film compositions have earned him a Golden Globe as well as three Academy Award nominations.
This selection of pieces showcases Glass’s music for solo piano, with each of the works baring the hallmarks of minimalism. Among the pieces featured in the collection is Metamorphosis, a set of five variations that evolve over the course of the entire work to create a stirring final movement. Also present are extracts from the soundtrack of Stephen Daldry’s film The Hours, as well as ‘Truman Sleeps’ from The Truman Show (which earned Glass a Golden Globe award for ‘Best Original Score’). The collection ends with the ‘Trilogy’ Sonata, containing piano transcriptions of Glass’s three ‘portrait’ operas: Einstein on the Beach, Satyagraha and Akhnaten.
Dutch pianist and composer Jeroen Van Veen studied at the Utrecht Conservatory and has played with many orchestras throughout Europe and the USA, under renowned conductors such as Howard Williams, Peter Eötvös and Robert Craft. An accomplished recitalist, van Veen has also appeared at festivals including the Reder Piano Festival and the Festival der Kunsten (Bad Gleichenberg). His compositional style is closely related to minimalism, and contains elements of jazz, blues and pop music.
Other information:
- Recorded 23–28 October 2006, Barbara Church, Culemborg, The Netherlands.
- A new compilation of the music for piano solo by Philip Glass, icon of minimalism. In his piano music, Glass presents structures of repeated patterns which slowly and gradually, seemingly unconsciously, change in rhythm, speed or form, creating a fascinating sound landscape of slowly shifting colours and patterns.
- Dutch pianist Jeroen van Veen is a champion of the minimalist piano school. His earlier set of minimalist piano works (BC 9171) has won rave reviews in the international press: “The leading exponent of minimalism (Fanfare)”, “10/10” performance/recording, Classicstoday.

These performances of Vivaldi’s violins concertos Op. 6 are a far cry from the elegant and charming performances of past generations: played on period instruments Vivaldi sounds powerful, vibrant, full of passion and drama. The “one player per part” formation is based on recent research by English scholar Richard Maunder, and provide a close, immediate sound, as it might have been heard in a Venetian Palace.
Vivaldi’s op.6 concertos first appeared in print in Amsterdam in 1719. However, this edition was unreliable in the extreme. Scoring was incorrect, the number of works indistinct, random movements separated from their correct work, and a host of other errors.
What is clear though is that these concertos are a decisive step forward from the works found in opp. 3 and 4. For example, all follow the fast-slow-fast pattern of the threemovement concerto. The solo violin has prominence, so we are moving away from the concerto-grosso style.
These recordings are the world premiere of the new critical edition by Alessandro Borin, Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi, Fondazione Giorgio Cini,Venice.

Composer: Georg Philipp Telemann
Artists: Collegium Instrumentale Brugense, Patrick Peire (conductor)
Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767) was one of the most prolific composers of the 18th century; although the largest part of his compositional activities were devoted to vocal music, he wrote a substantial number of overtures, which this splendid 8-disc collection is dedicated to.
Although Telemann chose the title of ‘Overtures’, this was somewhat interchangeable with the genre of the Suite in his era. Each work opens with a three-part French overture, and this is followed by a series of varied, shorter pieces – encompassing everything from dances (drawn from the French tradition and beyond), fugues, chaconnes, passacailles, musical portraits, folk dances and evocations of scenes and characters.
In these eight discs, Collegium Instrumentale Brugense and Patrick Peire’s three separate volumes of Telemann Overtures have been collected together for the first time, creating a box set that is set apart by its breadth. Its overview of 33 Overtures illuminates Telemann’s hugely inventive approach to instrumentation, while revealing the wealth of subjects that he sought inspiration in. The ‘Alster Overtüre’, for example, named after the Alster river in Germany, features a ‘Concert of Frogs and Crows’, while another Overture is inspired by Cervantes’ Don Quixote.
A generous selection of 33 Overtures (or Orchestral Suites) by Georg Philipp Telemann, formerly issued separately, now collected in one 8-CD set. This collection contains the Last 2 out of 8 discs.

Federico Guglielmo and his ensemble L’Arte dell’Arco have already made a number of acclaimed recordings of Vivaldi’s music for Brilliant Classics. This boxset brings together CDs previously published along with never-before-heard recordings, spanning Vivaldi’s Concertos and Sonatas Opp. 1–12 plus a bonus CD of Cello Sonatas. The comprehensive collection showcases the perennial music of ‘Il prete rosso’, with Italian musicians playing on authentic instruments, giving the closest version possible to the sounds that would have resonated in Venice 300 years ago.
This release is proud to feature some of Guglielmo’s long-time collaborators, including Mario Folena on the flute, Pier Luigi Fabretti on the oboe and Francesco Galligioni on the cello, all experienced performers with a sound that blends perfectly with L’Arte dell’Arco. The ensemble itself also differs from piece to piece, with Guglielmo carefully selecting the number of performers and instrumentation for each individual work, thereby creating the most authentic performance possible.
Guglielmo and his players bring a fresh interpretation to these beloved concertos as well as providing the listener with an opportunity to delve into Vivaldi’s lesser-known earlier works. With just one player per part, L’Arte dell’Arco strip back the layers, bringing a revitalising transparency to Vivaldi’s complex writing. The release includes world premieres of performances based on new critical editions of Vivaldi’s music authorised by the Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi, based at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice.

Federico Guglielmo and his superb ensemble L’Arte dell’Arco return with more Vivaldi delights, this time treating us to La cetra, a collection of 12 concertos. Most are for violin solo but one includes a second solo violin. Additionally, there is the fascinating inclusion of two concertos ‘con violin scordato’ – literally, a violin wrongly tuned; not an uncommon practice at the time.
The collection, dedicated to Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor, is called ‘la cetra’ after a cittern, or lyre. Not only does this indicate something of the sparkling string playing in the solo parts but it was also associated with the Hapsburg coat of arms, a nod to the dedicatee of the collection.

About this Album: It isn’t often that one finds a complete recording of Telemann’s Tafelmusik, and what a performance this is! The best “early music” musicians of The Netherlands came together and had obviously a good time: Flautists Wilbert Hazelzet and Kate Clark, violinist Rémy Baudet (concertmaster Orchestra of the 18th Century, lead by Frans Brüggen), cellists Richte van der Meer and Jaap ter Linden, under the inspiring direction of harpsichordist Pieter-Jan Belder.
Tafelmusik consists of three “Productions” in various ensembles, from solo to orchestral. It was written for performance during ceremonious dinners, explaining the “diverting” character of the music, which is by no means shallow or lightweight, but full of catching melodies and brilliant instrumental virtuosity, a proof of Telemann’s genius. Enjoy your meal, with this appetizing piece of music!

The 18th-century Italian Carlo Tessarini has only emerged relatively recently as the brilliant musician and composer that he was (thanks, in part, to an in-depth study published in 2012). He travelled widely, taking on diverse forms of work, and remaining musically active until a ripe old age – remembered by one of his contemporaries as a ‘lively 70-year-old who still regularly played the violin’.
We are treated here to an album consisting almost entirely of world premiere recordings. Within Tessarini’s exclusively instrumental oeuvre, he was in particular a prolific solo sonata writer. His works oscillated between virtuosity and accessibility – reflecting in part the commercial considerations attached to the publication of his work – though there is more than enough of the former here to excite the listener’s ear. Equally manifest are his subtle compositional innovations, such as the fluid approach to melodic counterpoint discernible in the Sonata in C major Op.2. The result is an album sure to convince listeners of the deeper attention that this skilful composer merits.
The sonatas are played by Valerio Losito, an esteemed violinist and viola d’amore player as well as a musicologist, whose first recording for Brilliant Classics was a Scarlatti album in 2011. The basso continuo is played by harpsichordist, professor and radio broadcaster Federico del Sordo.
Other information:
- Rarely recorded repertoire.
- Carlo Tessarini received his musical tuition in Venice, probably with Vivaldi and Corelli (whose musical heir he clearly is). He became a famous virtuoso on the violin, travelling Europe like a modern day pop star. He died in Amsterdam, leaving a substantial oeuvre mainly written for his own instrument.
- His violin sonatas are firmly rooted in the baroque tradition, but already pointing towards the “galante style” of the late 18th century, with an emphasis on belcanto melodies and cler and transparent structures.

Pietro Antonio Locatelli might not exactly be a household name, but in his day he was an international phenomenon – a prodigiously talented violinist who entertained royalty and who had studied with Corelli’s contemporaries from the age of 15. Renowned for exploring the very top register of his instrument, Locatelli is today considered the founding father of the modern virtuoso style. Spanning 5CDs, this compilation celebrates the genius of a man whose violin sonatas occupy an significant position in the history of the string repertoire.

Here’s another name from the Italian Baroque to conjure with, rescued from dusty obscurity by stylish Italian musicians and Brilliant Classics, who have an unrivalled back-catalogue of such discoveries. Giorgio Gentili (1669-1737) was a Venetian musician who made his name as a violinist, playing in the ducal chapel of St Mark’s. Appointed at the age of 20, he remained
in post as a principal soloist in the ensemble for over 40 years, as well as taking on a music-director post at the Ospedale dei Mendicanti. Though now almost forgotten, he was clearly well-respected within the competitive musical scene of early 18th-century Venice, being among the highest-paid musicians in the city.

About this Album:
It might be unusual to find classical music that manages to imbibe the spirit of Irish folk music; it must be even more unusual for that ‘Irish’ music to actually be by an Italian. But Michele Esposito was an unusual composer. Born in southern Italy, financial circumstances led him to settle abroad, and, after a brief spell in Paris, he arrived in Dublin in 1882, making Ireland his homeland for the next 46 years. His time there coincided with the Irish cultural revival that was taking place during the latter half of the 19th century, leading Esposito to find a place at the heart of several prominent cultural institutions.
One of these institutions was the Feis Ceoil, the Irish competitive music festival, at which Esposito won first prize for his Irish Rhapsody No.2 Op.54 in 1902. Folk music also inspired his Irish symphonies, for which he is well known, as well as the simple yet highly effective airs and melodies featured on this release. The three violin sonatas all stem from very different periods of the composer’s life; the first contains elements of Schumannesque piano writing in the third movement, as well as clear echoes of Saint-Saëns, whereas the second – more technically advanced – is more akin to the music of Brahms. Esposito’s last violin sonata, composed in 1913, is tonally much more experimental, and structured in a highly unconventional manner, with the Scherzo movement a slow and solemn minuet, concluding in an unusual sonata form.

Rutter: Gloria - Bernstein: Chichester Psalms - Poulenc: Quatre petites prières
Rutter & Bernstein & Poulenc: Choral Works
Here are dynamic modern performances of some of the most popular of all sacred vocal works written in the second half of the last century, expertly done by chamber choirs soaked in the tradition which the works themselves draw upon.
The Gloria is perhaps the best-known of the extended compositions by John Rutter, composer of such choral evergreens as A Gaelic Blessing and Shepherds’ Pipe Carol. Rutter’s setting fully captures the exuberance of the text, with sparkling orchestral colours and fullbodied choral parts.
Like the Gloria, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms (socalled because of the nature of their original commission, made in 1964 by the Dean of Chichester Cathedral, Walter Hussey) may be musically sophisticated in technical terms, but never at the expense of creating an instant impression or of serving the texts. The poignant treble solo in the second movement is still, along with ‘Maria’, one of Bernstein’s most imperishable melodies.
Poulenc, too, had melodies pouring out of him, though his settings of ancient liturgical texts (and rustic peasant prayers) in Litanies à la Vierge Noire, Quatre Petites Prières de Saint François d’Assise, Exsultate Deo and Salve Regina are in the more austere tradition of French sacred works.
00:00:00 Gloria: Gloria in Excelsis deo (Allegro vivace)
00:05:16 Gloria: Domine deus, Rex Coelestis (Andante)
00:12:31 Gloria: Quoniam Tu Solus Sanctus (vivace e ritmico)Bernstein by Choir of Clare College Cambridge, Timothy Brown & The Wallace Collection:

00:22:04 Chichester Psalms: Psalm 2, vv. 1-4; Psalm 23 vv. 1-6 (Andante Con moto, ma tranquillo)
00:27:05 Chichester Psalms: Psalm 131; Psalm 133, v.1 (Prelude - Peacefully flowingmFrancis Poulenc by Corydon Singers, Matthew Best & Richard Pearce:
