From the mandibles of a creepy crawly to your body comes a revolution in biomedical engineering. It's worm spit, from the silk worm moth caterpillar, although you may know it by its more common name, silk. Dr. David Kaplan explains how bioengineers at Tufts University are crafting this versatile protein into a myriad of medical materials.
For humans to travel to the Moon and Mars, they'll need a companion - a lowly weed. Just as Matt Damon survives on Mars in The Martian because he cultivates plants in the red planet's hostile conditions, astronauts will need to understand how to grow plants in extreme climates. Dr. Anna-Lisa Paul and Dr. Robert J. Ferl at the University of Florida, Gainesville Space Plants Lab, put weeds in unique situations - like sending them to the International Space Station - to study their behavior on a molecular level. Their research could pave the way for growing plants in extreme climates on Earth, the Moon, long-term space travel, and even Mars.
Deep in an abandoned gold mine in rural South Dakota, a team of physicists are hunting for astrophysical treasure. Their rare and elusive quarry is dark matter, a theoretical particle which has never been seen or directly detected. Yet its gravitational effect on distant galaxies hints at its existence and provides ample evidence to fuel the experiments and aspirations of scientists at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Insulated by 4,850 feet of rock, the researchers have constructed the world's most sensitive particle detector, known as the Large Underground Xenon Experiment, or "LUX." Their goal is to use this complex device to capture an epiphanous event: the interaction between dark matter and atoms inside a chilled tank of liquid xenon. If they're successful, the researchers may not only solve some of the biggest mysteries in astrophysics but affirm their faith in the nature of dark matter.
"4850 Feet Below" was produced with generous support from the John Templeton Foundation.
"Someone described my office as an eight-year-old's daydream," says Jill Tarter, astronomer and the inspiration for the character in Carl Sagan's "Contact." As the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute's first employee, Tarter has accumulated E.T.-themed office ornaments for the last thirty years -- including a bottle of wine only to be opened "only upon detection of Extraterrestrial signal."
July Fourth: A day for picnics, parades and chemistry. Bassam Shakhashiri, chemistry professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, explains some of the science of fireworks.

In which Mike delves into the theater of ancient Rome. It wasn't all gladiators and Christian-killing, you know. There was theater, too. Roman drama drew heavily on Greek drama. So heavily, in fact, that many of the stories and characters were lifted directly from Greek plays. This time around, you'll learn about Plautus, Terence, and Seneca, and just what they owe to Menander.

Today, we're going to discuss how numbers, like statistics, and visual representations like charts and infographics can be used to help us better understand the world or profoundly deceive. Data is a really powerful form of evidence because it can be absorbed quickly and easily, but neither data, nor interpretations of it, are neutral, so today we're going to discuss how to think critically about the statistics we encounter in everyday life.

Engineers are problem solvers, and our own health is full of problems to be engineered. In this episode we discuss drug discovery and drug delivery. We’ll explore everything from classical and reverse pharmacology to the new field of synthetic biology. We’ll also look at how important good disease detection is and why we need more targeted drug delivery systems.

The Genie Bananas - The Bananas are excited when they find a lamp that a genie could inhabit. Maybe they can get three wishes!
The Dragon - Everyone in Cuddlestown is getting ready to celebrate Chinese New Year. But when Amy goes down to the lake to hang up some lanterns for their parade, she is alarmed to see a dragon appear through the mist. She quickly runs back to town to warn everyone but is upset to find that no one believes her. The Bananas feel sorry for Amy. They don’t really believe in dragons either but they don't like to see their friend upset. They decide there’s only one thing to do. They'll try to find out just what sort of dragon Amy really saw.
Rat's Wishing Well - Then they spy Rat secretly taking the honeycakes out of the well and realise they've been tricked.
Rat's Fun World - Rat has a lot of tennis balls that he can't sell, so he offers anybody who buys one the chance to win a trip to an amusement park called 'Fun World'. The winners are the Bananas, but B1 and B2 are in for a big disappointment. Fun World is just a few ricketty old rides in Rat's backyard. Rat has tricked them again, but perhaps there's a way to trick him back.

The Cuddlestown Band - The Cuddlestown Band sounds great except for one small thing - none of the musicians can play in time together!
The Sneaky Shadows - The Bananas are excited because the Teddies are coming round to read them a story about fairies. But what are those strange sounds in the house, and why are the pictures moving, the lights flickering and the windows slamming shut? When Rat and the Teddies arrive, Rat claims to know the cause of all these strange goings-on. It must be fairies!
Pedro's Cousin - Before Rat can do anything about his rival, Pancho tries to play a clever trick but outsmarts himself and ends up getting lost in the bush. Can the Bananas find him, and will Pancho stop playing his tricks on everyone?
The Big Trick - It's April Fools Day and tricky Rat sets out to prove he's the trickiest trickster of all. Rat plays a trick on the Bananas and Teddies. He thinks they'll now try to play a trick back on him and plans to outsmart them.
