The NOvA neutrino experiment is searching for the answers to some of the most fundamental questions of the universe. This video documents how collaboration between government research institutions like Fermilab, academia and industry can create one of the largest neutrino detectors in the world.
Particle physics is an interesting field of science that is accessible to all audiences from 8 to 80. In this video, Fermilab’s Dr. Don Lincoln works with teenager Russell Farnsworth to craft a message that is aimed specifically at teens. Be sure to watch the outtake at the end!
Fermilab's muon-g-2 ring started its road journey, leaving Lemont, Illinois on a special transporter designed by Emmert International for this purpose. This video documents the first of three nights of the route.
Astronomy collaborations like the Dark Energy Survey, which Fermilab leads, can track down the visible sources of gravitational waves caused by binary neutron stars. This animation takes you through the collision of two neutron stars, and shows you the explosion of light and energy seen by the Dark Energy Camera on August 17, 2017.
Local proprietors Steve and Deb Wieber discuss the impact of the NOvA experiment on their community.
Brian Ingram of Argonne National Laboratories makes a presentation on his battery research at the 2015 Fermilab Physics Slam.
Her Excellency the Right Honorable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, visited the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory on April 26, 2018. The Governor General toured the lab’s extensive research complex and celebrated the start of a new partnership between Fermilab and York University in Toronto in support of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment.
The Muon g-2 ring successfully completed its second night of road journey on July 24 and 25, 2013. This time lapse was shot at an interval of one frame every two seconds. To learn more about Fermilab, the ring and its experiment visit http://www.fnal.gov.
Five physicists duke it out with 12 minutes each to explain a complex particle physics concept in front of a large audience of the general public. Then an applause meter determines the ultimate slammer. See below for links to presenters.

Scientists and dignitaries broke ground for an international mega-science project in South Dakota on July 21, 2017. The Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility will host the international Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, a project involving about 1,000 scientists from more than 160 institutions in 30 countries. Representatives from U.S. Congress, the Executive Office of the President, the state of South Dakota and global partners in the project participated in the groundbreaking. LBNF will send an intense neutrino beam through 1,300 kilometers of rock from the Department of Energy’s Fermilab to the DUNE particle detectors to be located in 1.5-kilometer-deep caverns at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. More info at http://dunescience.org
From the Fermilab archives: The 2016 Physics Slam!
The 2016 Physics Slam was held at Fermilab and included talks:
7:39 Robin Bjorkquist on the muon g-2 experiment,
17:13 Dan Hooper on Dark Energy,
29:00 Shane Larson on LIGO and gravity waves,
39:45 Dave Pushka on the NOvA detector and
49:35 Erick Prebys on the Mu2e experiment.
Fermilab hopes to send an intense beam of neutrinos from its site in Illinois to an underground laboratory in Lead, South Dakota. Since they were already called to a different assignment in South Dakota, Reidar Hahn and Jim Shultz of Fermilab's Visual Media Services took the opportunity to drive along the route the neutrinos would take, visiting with some interesting people and sites along the way.
Bradford Benson makes his presentation on his South Pole Cosmic Ray research at the 2015 Fermilab Physics Slam
With February 11 marking the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, female physicists, engineers and computer scientists from CERN and Fermilab share their experiences of building careers in science.
Krista Majewski came to Fermilab nine years ago as a software developer and now works in an operations role. She is a computing services specialist and part of the grid and cloud operations group, which manages computing clusters for the CMS experiment and other intensity frontier experiments at the lab.
"My typical day would be maintaining the services that our group is responsible for and the machines that they run on. So if there are problems with a computing cluster where a user can't run their jobs, or they're trying to run on resources on the grid and they're unable to, then our group would be responsible for helping debug some of those issues," Krista says.
Her path to programming at Fermilab has been winding. After receiving a degree in biomedical engineering, she went to work doing web development and programming for a large consulting firm, then moved to the financial industry. But programming called her back, and she earned a master's degree in computer science to start her new career. For Krista, programming is similar to something she enjoyed as child: solving puzzles. "I think it's a skill that you use in a lot of different ways," she says.
