Music by Two Steps From Hell
After Rome we caught our flight to Venice. A bit unromantic arriving in Venice on a plane and a train, but who's looking for romance... Not us! We received plenty of "are-you-two-together" insinuations to last us for a while. Also, I caught some bug and it was messing up my voice big-time. the cold weather of Venice made it only worse...

Letra:
regresó a tierra fría
a comprarse zapatos
en la zapatería.
Pero ay que pereza
y que amarga sorpresa
como no tiene patas
nada pudo comprar.
Ahí va la serpiente de tierra caliente
que cuando se ríe se le ven los dientes
porque está demente critica la gente
porque come plátanos con aguardiente

Letra:
Cierren la puerta del gallinero
Que se escapan las gallinas
Seis por uno, seis
Seis gallinas blancolinas
Seis por dos son doce
Doce gallinas que van a la esquina
Seis por tres dieciocho
Van apuradas a comprar harina
Seis por cuatro son veinticuatro
Vuelven con la margarina
Kokoroko
Kokoroko
Kokoroko
Kokoroko
Seis por cinco, treinta
Treinta gallinas van a la cocina
Seis por seis son treinta y seis
Hacen galletas muy finas
Seis por siete cuarenta y dos
Y traen la gasolina
Seis por ocho, cuarenta y ocho
La mezclan con naftalina
Kokoroko (enciendan el horno chicas)
Kokoroko
¡Te va a encantar!

The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, is one of the world’s best-known choral groups. Founded in the 15th century, it ranks among the oldest of its kind, and, while originally created for singing the daily services in the college chapel, now enjoys an international tour schedule that has seen it perform all over Europe and beyond. Every Christmas Eve, millions of people tune in to watch the choir’s A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from King’s – a service which has been continuously broadcast since 1928.
Recorded in 1994, this reissue joins the group’s already extensive discography of Christmas music – recordings that have enhanced its worldwide fame and reputation. The compilation mixes some of the best-loved traditionals, including Once in royal David’s city and O Come all ye faithful, with more recent repertoire – such as Rutter’s rousing What Sweeter Music and Judith Weir’s striking Illuminare, Jerusalem (specially commissioned by the choir for its 1985 annual service). Also featured are traditional German, French, Dutch and Polish carols (including two settings of Dulce Jubilo) – works which, together with Pärt’s enchanting Bogoróditse Dyévo, contribute to a wonderfully eclectic disc that provides over an hour of festive cheer.

Erik Satie (1866-1925) was without doubt one of great ‘one offs’in musical history. Impossible to categorise, he composed around 100 works, which include film scores, ballets, melodies and above all piano works. A friend of Debussy, Ravel, Cocteau,Picasso and Diaghalev, he was at the core of the avant garde in Paris, and yet he remained an outsider – deliberately so.
Happy playing piano in jazz bars – where he and Debussy met each other, Satie was the antithesis of the late 19th century and early 20th musical world as dominated by Wagner and his adherents. The master of Bayreuth had proclaimed himself the prophet of ‘music of the future’and his vast opulently scored music dramas cast their spell over the Second Viennese school, and also Debussy, whose opera Pelléas et Melisande has a good deal of Parsifal and Tristan in its score. With Satie, it was the music of the past that was important, and he even returned to the tones of the ancient Greeks. Gymnopédies evokes the dance of children from ancient Sparta, who danced in honour of Apollo. Similarly, Gnossiennes is from the labyrinth at Knossos (Gnossos). It wasn’t all ancient Greek influences though that guided Satie’s inspiration – jazz and the music hall were potent influences
Perhaps the most idiosyncratic work he composed is Vexations. He composed it in 1893, but refused to show the score to anyone, and the premiere took place in 1963 at the instigation of John Cage. The score occupies a single page, headed ‘Page Mystique. To play this motif 840 times in succession, it will be necessary to prepare oneself in advance, in total silence, by remaining absolutely motionless.’ A complete performance thus takes 18–30 hours. Cristina Ariagno plays an excerpt.

About this Album:
Stravinsky famously quipped that Vivaldi didn’t write 400 concertos, rather he wrote one concerto 400 times. Rather unfair, though witty. For many people though, Vivaldi is the composer of The Four Seasons (the first four of the twelve concertos Op.8), and maybe the famous Gloria. He is a composer who repays closer attention. There are some superb concertos in his large output, and some of them were sufficiently striking enough to attract the attention of J.S. Bach and Johann Quantz. His concertos are remarkable not only for the wealth of invention and the outstanding quality of the music, but also for the amazing range of instruments he wrote for.
This release is devoted to concertos for sopranino and alto recorders. Two of his greatest concertos ‘Tempesta di mare’ (Storm at Sea) and ‘La notte’ (Night) feature on the programme.
