In 2004, pediatric audiologist Allyson Sisler-Dinwiddie plunged into a world of silence after a car accident damaged her hearing. Under the care of hearing researcher Rene Gifford, she became one of the first test subjects of a new technique to improve cochlear implants, devices that use electrodes to stimulate cells in the inner ear. Since then, Sisler-Dinwiddie and Gifford have worked together to restore other patients' hearing. Watch the pair and their team at Vanderbilt University as they develop a resounding remedy to help people hear again.

Step Inside A Mad Scientist's Lab

The movie prop shop Jadis, in Santa Monica, California, is packed with ancient, long-forgotten technology: an Edison dictaphone, a typewriter-like counting machine and quack medical devices like the 'Hemodimagnometer.' But you might recognize some of these oddities--they've appeared in movies like The Mystery Men, The X-Files, and The Prestige.


Parke Meek, an industrial designer who worked with the likes of Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles and Ray Eames, opened Jadis as an antiques shop in 1976, with his partner Susan Lieberman. Later, Meek began to design props for the movie industry, like huge control panels dotted with switches and illuminated dials, sourcing his materials at swap meets and government auctions. "He'd say, 'Got anything heavy, expensive and useless for me today?'" Lieberman says.

Meek passed away in 2010 at the age of 86. But Lieberman still keeps the shop open for passersby on weekends--admission costs one dollar. She and Parke's nephew Thomas Meek gave Science Friday a tour of this cabinet of curiosities, recalling Parke's life and describing the perfect ingredients for a Hollywood mad scientist's lab.

In the second episode of Science Friday and HHMI's series "Breakthrough: Portraits of Women in Science," three scientists share stories about India's first interplanetary mission—a mission to Mars. With limited time and budget to design and launch the satellite—called MOM (for Mars Orbiter Mission)—Seetha Somasundaram, Nandini Harinath, and Minal Rohit spent long hours in the clean room, followed by tense and exciting moments tracking the satellite as it entered Mars's orbit. Their efforts helped India become the first nation to successfully reach the Red Planet on its first attempt.

These aren't your ordinary garden snails. Tiny cone snails may boast delicate and gorgeous shells, but they pack a powerful—and lethal—punch. The snails' venom can be fatal to various fish and even humans.


But it could also offer a potential cure.

Mandë Holford, a biochemist at Hunter College and the American Museum of Natural History, works with a team to investigate the snails' venom and look for compounds that could be used to treat pain and cancer. Ancient cultures have traditionally used their natural environment to look for cures for the things that ail them, she explains. Now, researchers are investigating how "nature's deadliest cocktail" could create new pathways for treating old problems.

Composer and instrument builder Paul Rudolph makes music from garbage. He combs recycling centers and scrap yards for what he calls "found object instruments"--propane tanks, film reels, artillery shells and other items that he likes the sound of. Rudolph sometimes modifies the objects and then uses the newly-minted percussive instruments in his music performance group GLANK, which has appeared at the Eagle Rock Music Festival in Los Angeles and Maker Faire in New York City. John Powell, physicist and author of How Music Works, chimes in on the physics of making music.

Carlo Acutis será pronto beato. El Papa Francisco firmó el 21 de febrero el decreto que reconoce un milagro atribuido a su intercesión y pronto será beatificado. A Carlo lo conocen como el “ciberapóstol de la Eucaristía”, porque ofreció los dolores del cáncer que padeció por la Iglesia -especialmente por Benedicto XVI- y utilizó su pasión por la informática para evangelizar y difundir el amor a la Eucaristía.
#CarloAcutis nació el 3 de mayo de 1991 en Londres (Inglaterra), donde vivía su familia por motivos laborales, y falleció en Monza (Italia) el 12 de octubre de 2006, día de la Virgen del Pilar y Nuestra Señora de Aparecida.
Carlo recibió su Primera Comunión a los siete años y desde entonces su vida estuvo marcada por un profundo amor hacia la Eucaristía, a la que consideraba como una “autopista hacia el cielo”.
Asistía a Misa todos los días y también rezaba el Rosario, impulsado por su devoción a la Virgen María, a quien consideraba su confidente. Además, daba clases de catecismo a los niños y ayudaba a los más necesitados.
Su intensa vida espiritual lo llevó a crear lo que algunos llamaron el “kit para hacerse santo”, que estaba compuesto por la Misa, la Comunión, el Rosario, la lectura diaria de la Biblia, la confesión y el servicio a los demás.
Sus restos reposan en el Santuario della Spogliazione (Despojo), en Asís, el mismo lugar donde San Francisco lo dejó todo para seguir al Señor.
