Following on from Canto Ostinato XL earlier this year, Brilliant Classics is proud to present Canto Ostinato XXL, a recording that brings a new perspective to Simeon ten Holt’s minimalist composition by adding a Romantic organ to the work’s original scoring for four pianos – a combination never before attempted. The result is the most beautiful and harmonious of sounds, one that captures Canto Ostinato’s emotional variety and depth through building on the sweetness and simplicity that inhabit this acclaimed composition, first performed in 1979.
Canto Ostinato is all to do with time: ‘taking your time, passing time, making time,’ as Jeroen van Veen, and one of the performers on the four-disc set, explains; and this is partly effected through the artists’ decision to repeat certain of the composition’s sections (106 in total) ad lib, thus inducing a sort of alienation of the part of the listener (because of the repetition’s posterior relationship to the harmony) and creating a hypnotic effect, a regular feature of minimalist music. Recorded over the course of just one day, this four-hour arrangement slows the tempo down a little, in order to accommodate the magnificent acoustics of the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. Joining organist Aaart Bergwerff and Brilliant Classics regulars Sandra and Jeroen van Veen, all of whom feature on XL, are the acclaimed piano duo Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann, both experts in the minimalist genre and who also enjoy separate international careers. Jeroen van Veen chairs the Simeon ten Holt Foundation, dedicated to keeping the wonderful music of this late Dutch composer alive.

About this Album: It isn’t often that one finds a complete recording of Telemann’s Tafelmusik, and what a performance this is! The best “early music” musicians of The Netherlands came together and had obviously a good time: Flautists Wilbert Hazelzet and Kate Clark, violinist Rémy Baudet (concertmaster Orchestra of the 18th Century, lead by Frans Brüggen), cellists Richte van der Meer and Jaap ter Linden, under the inspiring direction of harpsichordist Pieter-Jan Belder.

Tafelmusik consists of three “Productions” in various ensembles, from solo to orchestral. It was written for performance during ceremonious dinners, explaining the “diverting” character of the music, which is by no means shallow or lightweight, but full of catching melodies and brilliant instrumental virtuosity, a proof of Telemann’s genius. Enjoy your meal, with this appetizing piece of music!

Reason the more to welcome this new recording of a generous selection of Debussy piano works, centred around the substantial “12 Etudes”.These works, written in the later stage of Debussy’s creative life, form the apotheosis of his style. Far from any evocative “impressionistic” Tonmalerei or picturesque
atmosphere painting they are Debussy’s answer to the Etudes of Chopin, purely abstract creations of melody, harmony and rhythm. Fiercely uncompromising and difficult, they form the summit of Debussy’s piano oeuvre, and one of the highest challenges to any performing pianist.

The exciting young Italian pianist Mariangela Vacatello is a Liszt specialist, renowned for her passionate performances and technical ability. She has given concerts at prestigious venues across the USA and Europe, and she has won many awards. En este vídeo, el neurocientífico Facundo Manes explica los diferentes tipos de memoria -episódica, semántica, procedural y operativa- y cómo funcionan los circuitos cerebrales cuando recordamos y la importancia del olvido.

"No sé si alguno se imaginó que el cerebro tiene una cajita donde guarda los recuerdos. Nada más lejos de la realidad. Cada vez que evocamos una memoria, la podemos reconstruir. Lo que recordamos no es el hecho que vivimos, sino el último recuerdo. La vida no es la que vivimos, sino cómo la recordamos para contarla", explica Manes en palabras del célebre escritor Gabriel García Márquez.


Facundo Manes ha dedicado gran parte de su trayectoria profesional a descifrar los secretos del cerebro, actividad que sigue desarrollando como investigador del Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) de Argentina y del departamento Cognition and Brain Sciences de Cambridge.

“A mis hijos les digo: "Estudiá, porque además de que te va a permitir ser más libre y tener más oportunidades, cumplir tus sueños, levantar la autoestima, adaptarte a un mundo en permanente cambio... además de todo eso, va a proteger tu cerebro”, reflexiona el neurocientífico.

Fundador del Instituto de Neurología Congnitiva (INECO) y del Instituto de Neurociencias de de la Fundación Favaloro en Buenos Aires, el doctor Manes es autor de libros como ‘El cerebro del futuro’ y ‘Usar el cerebro’, donde explica el funcionamiento de nuestra materia gris.
