La intensidad de la luz solar en la tierra es de aproximadamente 1300 watts por metro cuadrado. Cuando enfocas los rayos del sol con una lupa (o en este caso, una esfera de agua), puedes aumentar la intensidad aproximadamente diez mil veces. Esto aumenta la temperatura de la madera hasta su punto de autoignición, lo que inicia la reacción junto con el oxígeno en la atmósfera. Este video presenta experimentos que me han enseñado los profesores de ciencias a lo largo de los años. ¿El hielo se derrite más rápidamente en agua salada o en agua dulce?: fue un experimento que me presentaron en la conferencia de profesores de ciencias de Utah. La demostración del anillo de metal deslizándose sobre una cadena provino de un evento para maestros en Florida. La idea de que agitar una bebida carbonatada aumenta la presión surgió de una sugerencia por correo electrónico.

En principio no parecería tener sentido que los teléfonos móviles causen cáncer porque la radiación que emiten es no-ionizante, lo que significa que no tienen suficiente energía para desprender electrones y destruir el ADN.
Sin embargo, han aparecido estudios científicos donde se muestra que altos niveles de microondas, tales como los de un teléfono móvil pueden generar la liberación de proteínas de choque térmico dentro del cuerpo. Y se cree que tal vez podría estar relacionado con un tipo de cáncer.
Entonces tal vez esa sea una razón suficiente para estudiar los efectos biológicos de los teléfonos móviles en la gente.

How do our eyes scan across a landscape? Contrary to popular belief, they don't scan smoothly across a scene, they observe a series of images. The eye is capable of panning smoothly however. If something moves in your field of view, your eyes track it smoothly. This has an important effect on our perception of motion. It makes it more difficult to see when objects are accelerating since the eye tracks all motion quite smoothly.

Encontré esta historia fascinante porque, en cierto modo, el cráter generado por una bomba nuclear se parece mucho al sitio de impacto de un meteorito. Se pensaba que el cráter Barringer era un sitio de impacto de meteoritos, pero los geólogos lo descartaron y lo consideraron como una formación volcánica. Pero luego de estudiar los cráteres de bombas nucleares y los minerales encontrados allí, los geólogos concluyeron que la energía y las presiones que crearon el Cráter Barringer eran demasiado altas para ser producidas por la actividad volcánica y, por lo tanto, deben haberse formado a partir del impacto de un meteorito.
