Termites cause billions of dollars in damage annually – but they need help to do it. So they carry tiny organisms around with them in their gut. Together, termites and microorganisms can turn the wood in your house into a palace of poop.

Termites such as dampwood termites use their cardboard-like poop pellets to build up their nests, turning a human house into a termite toilet. “They build their own houses out of their own feces,” said entomologist Michael Scharf, of Purdue University, in Indiana.

And while they’re using their poop as a building material, termites are also feeding on the wood. They’re one of the few animals that can extract nutrients from wood. But it turns out that they need help to do this.

A termite’s gut is host to a couple dozen species of protists, organisms that are neither animals, nor plants, nor fungi. Scientists have found that several of them help termites break down wood.

When some protists are eliminated from the termite’s gut, the insect can’t get any nutrition out of the wood. This is a weakness that biologists hope to exploit as a way to get rid of termites using biology rather than chemicals.

Louisiana State University entomologist Chinmay Tikhe is working to genetically engineer a bacterium found in the Formosan termite’s gut so that the bacterium will destroy the gut protists. The idea would be to sneak these killer bacteria into the termite colony on some sort of bait the termites would eat and carry back with them.

“It’s like a Trojan Horse,” said Tikhe, referring to the strategy used by the Greeks to sneak their troops into the city of Troy using a wooden horse that was the city’s emblem.

The bacteria would then kill the protists that help the termite derive nutrition from wood. The termites would eventually starve.

--- How do termites eat wood?

Termites gnaw on the wood. Then they mix it with enzymes that start to break it down. But they need help turning the cellulose in wood into nutrients. They get help from hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of species of microbes that live inside their guts. One bacterium, for example, combines nitrogen from the air and calories from the wood to make protein for the termites. A termite’s gut is also host to a couple dozen species of protists. In the termite’s hindgut, protists ferment the wood into a substance called acetate, which gives the termite energy.

--- How do termites get into our houses?

Termites can crawl up into a house from the soil through specialized tubes made of dirt and saliva, or winged adults can fly in, or both. This depends on the species and caste member involved.

--- What do termites eat in our houses?

Once they’re established in our houses, termites attack and feed on sources of cellulose, a major component of wood, says entomologist Vernard Lewis, of the University of California, Berkeley. This could include anything from structural wood and paneling, to furniture and cotton clothing. Termites also will eat dead or living trees, depending on the species.

Also, unlike the film, the Furious Five are captured by various gangs only to be saved by Po.

TAI LUNG

Tai Lung es el antagonista principal en Kung Fu Panda.
Tai Lung es un leopardo de las nieves que fue entrenado por el Maestro Shifu, quien lo adoptó cuando él fue abandonado siendo un cachorro en las puertas del Palacio de Jade. Shifu creía que estaba destinado a convertirse en el legendario Guerrero Dragón. Sin embargo,Tai Lung reveló poseer un corazón oscuro en el momento en que le fue negado el título, que él tanto deseaba, por el Gran Maestro Oogway. Cegado por la ira, arrasó el Valle de la Paz y, como resultado de sus actos, fue encerrado en la Cárcel Ghorh-Gom durante veinte años, tiempo en que su enojo fue aumentando.
Al escapar de la cárcel hizo el camino de vuelta al Palacio de Jade en un intento por tomar lo que él creía que era suyo por derecho, pero al final su objetivo le fue impedido por el verdadero y legendario Guerrero Dragón, quien finalmente lo derrotó al usar la técnica de la Llave Wuxi de dedo

Una mujer entregaba un pedido de Amazon en Nampa, en Idaho (Estados Unidos), cuando vio un cartel que le conmovió el corazón y decidió pedirle a Dios por un bebé enfermo. La escena quedó registrada por la cámara de seguridad de la casa y se hizo viral.

Monica Salinas realizaba una entrega de Amazon cuando, al llegar a una casa, vio el cartel que había publicado la familia Pearson. El mensaje, dijo a ACI Prensa, “me llegó al corazón”.

El matrimonio Pearson, a la espera de la entrega, colocó un mensaje acompañado de la foto del pequeño en la puerta: “Hola. Gracias por entregar nuestra comida y paquetería para nosotros. Tenemos un bebé con necesidades médicas y las entregas en línea son esenciales para su salud. Tú estás ayudando a mantener a nuestro hijo vivo y bien. Estamos agradecidos con todos los que están en la primera línea, entregando para nuestra familia. Mantente seguro y cuídate. Todo nuestro amor, la familia Pearson”.

Al leer el mensaje, recordó Monica, “dije ‘Diosito, por favor, protege a esta familia por tu sangre preciosa, (protege) al bebé y que pueda llegar a ser un adulto’”.

Raquel Pearson, de 30 años, explicó a ACI Prensa que su hijo Lucas “tiene una anomalía vascular del corazón. Él no puede beber líquidos delgados, por lo que debemos pedir espesantes especiales para que pueda beber de manera segura sin aspirar. Eso es lo que estábamos esperando ese día”.
Lucas cumplirá 9 meses este 29 de mayo.

“Pusimos el mensaje fuera de nuestra puerta porque hemos estado en cuarentena y ordenamos todo para la entrega a domicilio. Estamos muy agradecidos por todos los que trabajan fuera de casa para que familias como nosotros puedan quedarse en casa”, señaló.

Cuando vio el video junto a su esposo, recordó, “comenzamos a llorar. Estábamos muy agradecidos de que un extraño se tomara tiempo de su día muy ocupado para rezar por nuestro hijo”.

“Publicamos el video en Facebook y gente comenzó a reconocerla. Cuando hablamos por primera vez, nos dijo que había estado orando por nuestro hijo durante mucho tiempo”, señaló.

Dora Salinas, la madre de Monica, dijo a ACI Prensa que las dos junto a su esposo conforman un coro, que con frecuencia canta en Misas y otros servicios religiosos católicos. Asisten regularmente a la iglesia de San Pablo, en Nampa.

Monica, dijo su madre, “canta, ella toca la guitarra, ella alaba a Dios con toda su alma siempre. Y ese día ella se compadeció de que el niño estuviera enfermo y pensó que los padres también estaban sufriendo igual”.

Monica tiene ya un camino recorrido en la música y ha participado en concursos de canto como American Idol en Estados Unidos.

Pero no deja de remarcar que Dios “me ha marcado la vida”.

A quienes han sido conmovidos por la historia que se viralizó, Monica les recordaría “que Dios es bueno. Siempre le digo a la gente, todos los días, que Dios es bueno y un día a la vez”.

Su madre, por su parte, subrayó que Dios “es muy lindo, nos ha sacado de muchos problemas, de muchas dificultades, enfermedades, Él siempre ha estado con nosotros”.

Raquel Pearson destacó que todas las reacciones que han recibido tras la difusión del video “han sido positivas”.

“Creo que la gente realmente aprecia ver una historia así de positiva durante un momento tan difícil en el mundo”, señaló.

Raquel indicó además que “hemos creado una página en Facebook llamada ‘Strong Like Lucas’ (Fuerte Como Lucas) donde las personas pueden seguir su historia y pueden donar para su tratamiento médico”.
