You’ve probably heard of Charles Darwin, but before we get to him, you really need to understand how different people, throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, tried to answer the same question: “what is life?”

This is the story of two songs and several fine musicians. Lori Lieberman's version of the tale is she saw Don McClean perform his song "Empty Chairs" at The Troubadour in Los Angeles in the early 70s. She was so moved by the song she wrote a poem based on it from which the song "Killing Me Softly" was born. After she related the experience to Norman Gimbel he took her feelings and put them into words. Then, Gimbel passed the words on to Charles Fox, who set them to music. Fox himself, however, has specifically repudiated Lieberman's having input into the song's creation, saying: "We ,Gimbel and Fox, wrote the song and Lieberman heard it and said it reminded her of how she felt at a Don McLean concert. Don McLean didn't inspire Norman Gimbel or I to write the song but even Don McLean thinks he's the inspiration for the song according to his official website!" This much is certain. Lori Lieberman is the first to record "Killing Me Softly". Roberta Flack first heard Lieberman's recording. Flack went on to record it and it became a number one hit. The romantic in me wants to believe Lori.

Song: Killing Me Softly
Singer: Lori Lieberman
Album: A Thousand Dreams
Composer: Charles Fox
Lyrics: Norman Gimbel

This version is a 1996 recording.
Lori Lieberman is the original singer of this song.

A video with song from her 1972 album "Lori Lieberman" is also here in this channel.

.

♫ Killing Me Softly

I heard he sang a good song
I heard he had a style
And so I came to see him
to listen for a while
And there he was this young boy
A stranger to my eyes

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I felt all flushed with fever
Embarrassed by the crowd
I felt he found my letters
And read each one out loud
I prayed that he would finish
But he just kept right on

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

(guitar adlib)

He sang as if he knew me
In all my dark despair
And then he looked right through me
As if I wasn't there
But he was there this stranger
Singing clear and strong

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song....

(then the final lonely finale orchestral plays on....)

The lyrics of this song was based on a poem that Lori Lieberman wrote.
I first heard this song being played in a music store in Ginza in Tokyo in early February 1973.

The more popular Roberta Flack's cover of this song was released at least year after this 1972 Lori Lieberman original.
-----

From Wikipedia:
Lori Lieberman is an American singer. She was born in California and grew up in Switzerland, and signed a deal with Capitol Records in the early 1970s. Her self-titled debut album featured the tune "Killing Me Softly with His Song", said to have been written after seeing Don McLean in concert.
The tune was reworked by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel, and would go on to be a chart-topping single for Roberta Flack a few years later. Lieberman released several albums on Capitol in the 1970s and also provided music for the Schoolhouse Rocks TV show in the late '70s and early '80s. In the 1980s Lieberman receded from the industry and had three children; in the mid-1990s she began recording again for independent labels."

You may visit her official website:
