Photographer Colin Legg makes time-lapse movies of celestial scenes, from auroras to eclipses. Photographing mostly in remote parts of Australia, where human-made light doesn't compete with starlight, Legg describes some of the challenges of this type of photography -- from babysitting cameras for days and nights on end to running electronics in the backcountry.

You do not need silicone here. What I always pay attention to is the cup from the light to the dark color to layers, because then when pouring the light color finally comes out of the cup.

- Jarabacoa Flower Festival -

Once a year all of Jarabacoa comes out to for a big party: and it’s the Jarabacoa Flower Festival. It originated with the Japanese immigrants. But Jarabacoa has always been well known for its flowers. Due to its mild climate Jarabacoa became on of the central points on the island for growing flowers that aren’t as common in other places on the island.

Orchids for example are a flower that is not unique to Jarabacoa, but pretty common here, especially in the wild. This fact, plus the Japanese immigration in the 50s that encouraged the growing and exporting of flowers, turned Jarabacoa into the a pivotal point for anything that grows with more colors than just green. The event lasts for 4 days, usually towards the end of June. It always sets up somewhere around the Jarabacoa avenue.

So what can you do here? Well, besides buying flowers at special offers, you can indulge in just enjoying a stroll through what we'll call a tiny state fair. A month earlier they even elect a Queen of the Festival who then represent the town in other event throughout the island. For the most part the festival is visited by Dominicans, but you will also see the odd foreigner. They're easy to spot, especially if they're Americans: they're pretty much the only ones wearing shorts. True, it's a stereotype, but the evidence ain't helping the argument.

You can eat, buy artisanal decorations, jewelry, various exhibitions, enjoy free coffee and free concerts. During the day there are presentations by local artists and in the evening more nationally known artist show up for a few sets of their more popular songs. Dancing is optional.

There is a cover charge of 10 pesos per day, which is about 20 cents. Saturdays has the flower parade, an event that also features — besides floats, bands and cheerleaders — Jarabacoa's second indulgence: horses. People come from all over the island joining in the cabalgada: a cavalcade, or procession of horsemen, along the Jarabacoa avenue. You'll get to see several million dollars worth of paso fino horses riding down the street. That in itself is quite the impressive show. I mean, most of us can imagine a car worth being a million bucks, but a horse?

Now granted, by most standards the Jarabacoa flower fair is kind of small. Then again, Jarabacoa is still a village aspiring to become a town. It has no industry, but does rely almost entirely on agriculture, exporting vegetables, coffee and, well, flowers. The festival has only been going on for about 6 years, but it has been growing consistently.

So if you're in town and got an afternoon to to spare, swing by.

At the Haitian border, trying to cross. And the UN wasn't much help either. Plus, what happens with tax-deductible donations? By the way, this is Jimani, the village that was at the center of the Earthquake relief-efforts a year later. My brother returned here after the quake to help. but that's a different story entirely...

Historia:

Había una vez un leñador y su esposa que vivían en el bosque en una humilde cabaña con sus dos hijos; hansel y gretel. Trabajaban mucho para darles de comer pero nunca ganaban lo suficiente
Un día, viendo que ya no eran capaces de alimentarlos y que lo niños pasaban mucha hambre, el matrimonio se sentó a la mesa y amargamente tuvo que tomar una decisión

No podemos hacer otra cosa, los dejaremos en el bosque con la esperanza de que alguien de buen corazón y mejor situación que nosotros pueda hacerse cargo de ellos
-dijo la madre:

Los niños que no podían dormir del hambre que tenían, oyeron toda la conversación y comenzaron a llorar en cuanto supieron el final que les esperaba

Hansel, el niño dijo a su hermana:
no te preocupes, encontraré la forma de regresar a casa, confía en mí.

Así que al día siguiente fueron los 4 al bosque, los niños se quedaron junto a una hoguera y no tardaron en quedarse dormidos, cuando despertaron no había rastro de sus padres y la pequeña gretel empezó a llorar

No llores, he ido dejando trocitos de pan a lo largo de todo el camino, solo tenemos que esperar a que la luna salga y podremos ver el camino que nos llevara a casa
pero la luna salió y no había rastro de los trozos de pan; se los habían comido las palomas

Así que los niños anduvieron perdidos por el bosque hasta que estuvieron exhaustos y no pudieron dar un paso más del hambre que tenían. Justo entonces, se encontraron con una casa de ensueño, hecha de pan y cubierta de bizcocho y cuyas ventanas eran de azúcar

Tenían tanta hambre que enseguida se lanzaron a comer sobre ella
de repente se abrió la puerta de la casa y salió de ella una vieja que parecía amable

¿Hola niños qué hacen aquí? ¿Acaso tienen hambre?
-los pobres niños asintieron con la cabeza. Vengan, entren a la casa y les preparare algo muy rico!

La vieja les dio que comer y les ofreció una cama en la que dormir, pero pese a su bondad había algo raro en ella
por la mañana, temprano cogió a hansel y lo encerró en el establo mientras el pobre no dejaba de gritar
Aquí te quedaras hasta que engordes!

Con muy malos modos despertó a su hermana y le dijo que fuera por agua para preparar algo que comer, pues su hermano debía engordar cuanto antes para poder comérselo

La pequeña gretel, se dio cuenta entonces de que no era una vieja si no una malvada bruja

Pasaban los días y la bruja se impacientaba porque no veía engordar a hansel ya que este cuando le decía que le mostrara un dedo para ver si había engordado siempre la engañaba con un huesecillo aprovechándose de su ceguera de modo, que un día la bruja se cansó y decidió no esperar más

Gretel, prepara el horno que vas a amasar pan! ordenó a la niña

La niña se imaginó algo terrible. Y supo que en cuanto se despistara la bruja la arrojaría dentro del horno

No se cómo se hace, dijo la niña
niña tonta, quítate del medio!

Pero cuando la bruja metió la cabeza dentro del horno la pequeña le dio un buen empujón y cerró la puerta; acto seguido, corrió hasta el establo para liberar a su hermano, los dos pequeños se abrazaron y lloraron de alegría al ver que habían salido vivos de aquella horrible situación

Estaban a punto de marcharse cuando se les ocurrió echar un vistazo por la casa de la bruja

y que sorpresa! Encontraron cajas llenas de perlas y piedras preciosas, así que se llenaron los bolsillos y se dispusieron a volver a casa, pero cuando llegaron al río y vieron que no había ni una tabla ni una barquita para cruzarlos, creyeron que no lo lograrían

Menos mal que por allí pasó un gentil pato y les ayudó amablemente a cruzar el río. Al otro lado de la orilla continuaron corriendo hasta que vieron a lo lejos la casa de sus padres, quienes se alegraron muchísimo cuando los vieron aparecer y más aún cuando vieron lo que tenían escondido en sus bolsillos, en ese instante supieron que vivirían el resto de sus días felices los 4 y sin pasar penuria alguna.

Recientemente se ha hecho viral un vídeo, en el que el papa Francisco se resiste repetidas veces, y de una forma muy llamativa, a que le besen el anillo. Si quieres saber más sobre este asunto y formar mejor tu opinión al respecto, no te puedes perder este vídeo.
