The Messiah was written at great speed by Handel during the winter of 1741–2, and was received to great acclaim its first performance in Dublin in 1742. Charles Jennens compiled the text from the Bible, and the work is cast in three sections. Although a success in Dublin, the work had a less than warm welcome when it was performed in London without its title, and called ‘a New Sacred Oratorio’ to avoid causing offence to the rather puritanical British public and press. This ruse failed however, and the press were hostile. Jennens and Handel also fell out, as Jennens felt that the composer hadn’t taken enough time and care over the music! This was a low point for Handel, and he seriously contemplated leaving the UK and returning to Germany. Eventually, after a few years, and after a series of performances for charitable causes, the work became a firm favourite. It has been linked ever since with the composer’s generous charitable donations to the Foundling Hospital, of which he was a director along with William Hogarth and Thomas Coram.
Messiah is the masterpiece of the English Baroque, and for 200 years has been performed by both professional and amateur choirs around the world. Handel’s gift for truly memorable tunes and (notwithstanding Jennens’s concerns) the care he took in setting the text have ensured that it has remained one of the most famous works
ever composed.

There is no piece of music as synonymous with the organ than J.S. Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV565: the two-note introductory motif is as well recognised as the opening of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, and has featured widely in popular culture – in films such as Disney’s Fantasia and The Phantom of the Opera. Interestingly, it may actually be an arrangement for organ of an original work for violin, possibly not even by Bach himself! However, regardless of its authenticity, it is this fantastical and much-loved piece that opens Stefano Molardi’s recital of Bach’s greatest compositions for the ‘king of instruments’.

Molardi’s programme continues with major works such as the Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C BWV564 and the monumental Passacaglia in C minor BWV582, interspersed with more delicate pieces from the composer’s different collections of chorale preludes – the Orgelbüchlein, ‘Schübler’ Chorales and third part of the Clavierübung. The Trio Sonata in C BWV529 adds some great variety to the compilation, and is a feat of technical ingenuity, with three individual melodies taken up by each hand and the feet of the player. This two-disc set brings together the best-known organ works by its greatest patron: a perfect introduction to organ music for a beginner, and a marvellous addition to the collection of an enthusiast already well-versed in the repertoire. Award-winning organist, harpsichordist, conductor and scholar Stefano Molardi is a peerless interpreter, with his ongoing recording of Bach’s Complete Organ Music for Brilliant Classics now into its third volume (BC94981). The instruments heard on this album date from Bach’s time, therefore bringing us as close as possible to the soundworld of the great Leipzig Cantor and allowing us to hear them as he might have done himself.

About this Album:
Brahms had already declared to his long-suffering publisher Simrock that he was done with the business of composition before producing these, his final pieces of chamber music. He was inspired by the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld, a player in the court orchestra of Meiningen, where Hans von Bülow conducted the composer’s music including all the symphonies. Mühlfeld’s breath control and superb melodic sensitivity evidently reawakened in the composer the long-breathed melodies which mark out his chamber music throughout his career, but Brahms soon declared that the sonatas could just as well be played on the viola, perhaps with one eye on his royalties from Simrock, but violists have been glad to seize on their ‘own’ Brahms ever since.
Melancholy is perhaps inevitably the major key of both sonatas – Brahms had been drawn to express autumnal loneliness even 40 years before – but they are not gloomy works, and are built with undimmed ingenuity as masterfully organic structures in which the usual contrast of first and second themes is forsaken for the kind of continuous variation which Arnold Schoenberg could justly and admiringly describe as ‘musical prose’.

The four famous concertos of Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione, Le quattro stagioni (‘The Four Seasons’) have previously been recorded hundreds of times, and have been heard in concert halls around the world since their rediscovery at the beginning of the 20th century. L’Arte dell’Arco and their leader Federico Guglielmo offer a new interpretation of the works by stripping back the embellishments and excessive ornamentation added over the years and reintroducing the essential element of simplicity: there is just one player to a part, thereby revealing the underlying structure and a welcome transparency of sound. The other works of the Opus 8 are similar to the more famous Seasons with their distinguishing titles added by Vivaldi: ‘La tempesta di mare’, like the Seasons, adds an element of nature, while ‘La caccia’ depicts a rural scene not dissimilar to ‘L’autunno’ of the Four Seasons, though this time with a deeply introspective Adagio section. This release also includes two concertos featuring the solo oboe rather than the violin, an instrument particularly well suited to the tessitura of the works, which are less virtuosic than some of the previous concertos.

The last issue, a crowning achievement, of Vivaldi’s complete Opus 1-12 is the Opus 8, the 12 violin concertos of which the numbers 1-8 are “Le Quattro Stagioni”.
Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” belong to the canon of classical music, the most iconic, popular and well known works, the melody of “Spring” being a classical “ear bug” if ever there was one.
The performance of Federico Guglielmo and his L’Arte dell’Arco strip the Four Seasons of centuries of misuse, romantic veneer and tasteless embellishments, going back to the roots of the music, and discovering the essential power and originality, “Guglielmo understand the secret language of Vivaldi” (Diapason). The ensemble play original instruments and use one player per part.

About this Album:
‘Galant pleasures’ seems an apt description for this release, which presents a charming selection of works written for the mandolin in 18th-century Paris. Indeed, it was around this time that a number of plucked instruments came into vogue, and the mandolin in particular found great success among the nobility and middle classes, taking part in an atmosphere of intellect and refinement that prompted a new artistic direction in music of the period, revolutionising audiences’ tastes and sensibilities along the way.

Zaneboni, Altieri, Cifolelli, de Gistau, de Ferreira: many of the composers included hailed from different parts of Europe, eventually settling in Paris where music for the mandolin was reaching its zenith. The vast majority, if not all, will be unfamiliar with listeners, but this should not discourage them from tapping into a gem-packed compendium built around a number of sonatas as well as arias – works which highlight the instrument’s divertissement role in salons of the time. Acclaimed period-performance group Artemandoline is the featured ensemble, all of its members having undertaken painstaking research in order to recapture the standards of mandolin playing once enjoyed among the upper echelons of society, and which has set new standards in the interpretation and perception of 17th- and 18th-century works. Joined by soprano Nathalie Pearson, this release marks their second recording for Brilliant Classics, the first dedicated to the complete mandolin sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti.’

Johann Sebastian Bach’s stature as a composer of extraordinary talent and widespread influence is so firmly established in Western culture that it is difficult to believe that only 150 years ago his works lay in veritable obscurity, unknown to all but a small group of scholars. It is largely thanks to ohn, who essentially effected a revival of the composer’s music through his rediscovery and promulgation of the St Matthew Passion, besides other pieces, that his works are today regarded as pinnacles of music expression. That they are among the most performed and widely attended is in no doubt; in Holland alone, thousands of singers and musicians are involved in dozens of performances of the St Matthew Passion in Holy Week, with hundreds of thousands listening in churches and concert halls, or gathered around the radio, to what has been described as ‘the Gospel according to Bach’.

The collection Contains 142 CDs (112 hours) representing the entirety of Johann Sebastian Bach’s oeuvre in historically informed performances. This includes all 200 sacred cantatas recorded for Brilliant Classics on period instruments and sung by the Holland Boys Choir.

About this Album:
Those by Dvořák chart the evolution of his style, from his interest in Wagnerian music in the years prior to 1870 – String Quartet in D major – to the folk-infused works of his later life, such as the String Quartet in G major Op.106, and show the influence of his time in the United States, with the String Quartet in F Op.96 ‘American’. The quartets of Smetana have a distinctive neo-classical flavour while those of Janáček show strong links to his operatic works. Prolific composer Bohuslav Martinů composed six quartets, of which two were mislaid during the war. One of these, his fifth string quartet, is widely considered to be one of the most pivotal works in the composer’s oeuvre, written in 1938, a year of much upheaval in Martinů’s life. Many of the quartets in the collection hold an emotional dimension, all of which are exquisitely brought to life by the Stamitz Quartet.

Established in 1985, the Stamitz Quartet quickly became known as leading interpreters of Czech repertory. Winners of the 1986 National Broadcasting Union Competition in Salzburg, the Quartet’s rise to fame was meteoric; they have since participated in tours throughout Europe and America and undertaken a variety of recording projects, of which this collection is one.

The Veracini who wrote these playful and virtuosic trio sonatas is not Francesco Maria but his uncle, Antonio. The nephew’s work is relatively well-known, including an Op.1 set of twelve sonatas which has already received a recording on Brilliant Classics (BC93809) by Enrico Casazza and La Magnifica Comunita. Antonio was also born and raised a Florentine, taught by his father and in time director of the school of music which Veracini pere had founded. This duty was the likely obstacle to his forging an international career, despite promising and well-received visits to Rome and Vienna.

Franz Liszt is universally celebrated as one of the greatest-ever virtuoso performers on the modern piano. Contemporary accounts describe his seemingly superhuman technical abilities and equally striking charisma and stage presence. Yet Liszt was a formidable composer, and his expansion of pianistic possibilities was achieved as much through innovation in his own great piano works as through his astonishing performance on the instrument, if not more. Like many child virtuosos thrust early into busy concert careers (Liszt’s began at the age of nine) he retired early, weary of the spotlight, turning his back on the stage at the remarkably early age of 35. Since he lived to the likewise remarkable old age of 75, much more than the latter half of his life was devoted solely to composition, and having been a pianist of his calibre, the works he created for his own instrument were indeed groundbreaking.

Only in recent decades has the viola da gamba become a focus for systematic study in its own right, independently of the violin, its heyday having occurred during the Renaissance and Baroque periods when, over the course of time, it began to turn towards more select audiences and a greater refinement of repertoire – elegance and exclusiveness became its bywords. One of its greatest propagators was undoubtedly Georg Philipp Telemann, who nourished his celebrity composer status through being extraordinarily prolific, writing for the instrument a rich, varied and distinctive repertoire, and simultaneously defying his contemporaries by choosing to include the instrument in many of the editions he published throughout his lifetime.

About this Album:
Henri Sauguet composed for many solo instruments, but writing for the guitar was where his passion lay, describing the instrument as ‘very noble’ and ‘one of the great instruments that belong to all ages’. An eclectic, prolific and original composer, Sauguet’s great gift lay in his ability to construct with just a few notes sound sketches that transcend genres, taking inspiration from a wide pool of trends. Sauguet began composing music for the guitar in 1958 with Soliloque, a vibrant, emotionally charged piece in which tonality and modality intermingle with chromaticism, and continued with the elegant harmonic solutions of Trois Préludes in 1970 and the subtle and expressive neo-modality of Musiques pour Claudel in 1973. These two suites, written to celebrate the French writer Paul Claudel, were followed by Six Pièces faciles in 1975, which was more frivolous in nature but nevertheless evocative, with memorable melodic themes. The crowning note in his guitar music writing career came with Révérence à Johann Sebastian Bach, written in 1985 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the great German composer’s birth, and Cadence, his final piece for the solo guitar written at the age of 84 and published posthumously in 1990, containing two distinct sections that intertwine, the first part mechanical and regular, the second contemplative and lyrical.

A unique collection of American romantic piano music, written largely in the last third of the 19th century, by Foote, Whiting, Paine, Chadwick and Nevin. In a period where in Europe piano music was in the hands of towering virtuosos like Liszt, Anton Rubinstein and later Rachmaninoff, the American scene was notably less tormented, focusing on tone painting idyllic landscapes, rural scenes and charming dance forms.
These genre pieces share the same delightful characteristics as their European pendants by Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Grieg, Gade, Sinding and others.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778–1837) was a pupil of Mozart, a protégé of Haydn, a friendly rival of Beethoven, and renowned throughout Europe as one of the greatest pianists of his day, a sought-after teacher who instructed some of the most distinguished 19th-century virtuosi, the author of an influential treatise on the art of pianism, and himself the composer of over three hundred works covering all musical genres (apart from the symphony).

This 20CD Edition provides a cross-section of Hummel’s excellent, prolific and unjustly neglected output, with a large section of solo piano music including the complete sonatas and etudes and a rich selection of chamber music featuring violin, viola, cello, flute, and guitar with piano, as well as larger ensembles from piano trios to septets.

This Edition contains a generous selection of his works: the complete piano sonatas and other piano works, several piano concertos, violin concerto, bassoon concerto, trumpet concerto, mandolin concerto, violin/piano concerto, chamber music, masses, an oratorio and the opera Mathilde.
