About 8 months ago, I was helping a new filmmaker who wanted tips and tricks to quickly shoot a voiceover. He had one (1) crappy recorder, a girl with a nice voice, and a gym next to a noisy street. He recorded it with an iPhone and I thought these tips and tricks might be useful for you.

Jeroen van Veen’s recordings of Minimalist piano music have received critical acclaim while also reaching a wide and receptive audience. Previous albums of Satie (BC94768), Einaudi (BC9452), Glass (BC9519), Riley (BC95217) and much more are now joined by the music of Michael Nyman, who may not have invented the genre as Satie did, but was the first to bring Glass, Reich and their contemporaries to wider attention and coin the term Minimalism to describe the way that they rebelled against European modernism and returned to a stripped-back tonality in ways that meshed with popular music of the time.
Michael Nyman (born 1944) is one of the most famous and successful film music composers of our time. His music, although inextricably connected with the visual action of a film, has the quality to stand on its own, to evoke and express the visual emotions in sounds only.
Nyman’s most famous film score is of the film “The Piano” , becoming an instant hit. Its openness and its deceptively simple musical lines appealed to a mass audience.
The music featured on this recording is either originally written for piano or arranged by the composer himself.
Minimal Music champion Jeroen van Veen has been fascinated by Nyman’s music his whole life, and the recording of it was a logical step. He is the ideal interpreter of this seductive, mind opening music.

When Einaudi burst onto the classical music scene some 20 years ago, critics were at first unsure how to react. What to make of a composer who has arguably broken through the boundaries of traditional classical music, forging his own path and attracting millions of fans? How to classify his soothing, peaceful, stunningly beautiful compositions? No one could have foreseen the astonishing precedent Einaudi has set, having had an important role in bringing classical music into the mainstream and at the same time asking us to forget our traditional categories and labels, and just sit back and enjoy his unique works. Pianist and composer Jeroen van Veen has long been a fan of Einaudi’s deceptively simple style. Here he has brought together a personal selection of the composer’s best works, and any listener unfamiliar with Einaudi up until now will soon see why he has garnered the enormous fame and attention he enjoys worldwide today.

Mozart’s piano sonatas date from 1773 until 1788 – a period in which his style matured at a truly remarkable rate. The earliest sonatas are very much in the galant style of W.F and CPE Bach, and in places Scarlatti’s influence can be detected. However, the late sonatas, such as K457 are full of surprises, and here the influence of Haydn is to the fore – even predicting Beethoven in passages. The years from 1773 to the late 80s saw the rapid development of the piano from a novelty and experimental instrument, to the stage where it’s power and range provided composers with a hitherto undreamed palate of colours and expression. Mozart exploited the new instruments to maximum effect in his concertos and his sonatas.

Composer: Nicolò Paganini
Artist: Luigi Attademo (Guitar)
Nicolò Paganini’s works for guitar were only published in their entirety in 1989. The Genoese musician was a sensation during his lifetime and is still counted among the greatest violinists of all time, yet he was also an excellent guitarist. At the other end of the compositional spectrum to his works for violin, Paganini’s guitar works have a more intimate feel; not intended for the concert hall, they are often free from the virtuosic display that was typical of solo works of the era.
The Ghiribizzi collection contains a charm and simplicity appropriate to the musical proficiency and development of a young guitar student, concentrating on areas such as ornamentation, scalic exercises and pedal notes. The 37 Sonatas are a collection of two-movement pieces (with the exception of No.11 and Nos. 34–37); among the movements are charismatic minuets, mellow Andantinos and lilting waltzes. A further wealth of compositional variation can be found in the Guitar works MS85–105. The Grande Sonata, one of Paganini's most popular works, originally employed the violin as an accompaniment to the guitar; this collection provides a performance of the Sonata for solo guitar -- a real treat. The use of a period guitar for this recording adds a special quality to the collection.

From the Symphony No.1, composed when Mozart was just eight years old, to the mature and well-loved ‘Haffner’, ‘Prague’ and ‘Jupiter’ symphonies, this comprehensive 11-CD set collects together Mozart’s complete body of work in this genre, performed on period instruments by the Mozart Akademie Amsterdam and conducted by Jaap ter Linden.
Mozart is recognised as one of the great composers of the Classical symphony, building upon the achievements made by his mentor Joseph Haydn to develop its form. At the time that he composed his Symphony No.1 in 1764, the symphony’s form was still closely linked to that of the French opera overture, with three short movements in a fast-slow-fast pattern. Gradually, composers like Haydn began to expand this structure to the four-movement form that we are familiar with as the Classical symphony. These fascinating developments in style and structure can be heard in Mozart’s changing approach to symphonic composition throughout his career, and the booklet notes that accompany this release trace such developments in depth.

About this Album:
The harp is the ultimate romantic icon: the instrument of angels, and of Cupid, the god of love. One of the world’s oldest musical instruments, yet one of the most versatile and cherished, its modern counterpart also has the largest range of any orchestral instrument. This dreamy collection pulls together an equally extensive range of concertos for harp, contrasting the towering figures of Handel and Mozart with gems by lesser-known composers such as François-Adrien Boieldieu and Johann Georg Albrechtsberger.

The Messiah was written at great speed by Handel during the winter of 1741–2, and was received to great acclaim its first performance in Dublin in 1742. Charles Jennens compiled the text from the Bible, and the work is cast in three sections. Although a success in Dublin, the work had a less than warm welcome when it was performed in London without its title, and called ‘a New Sacred Oratorio’ to avoid causing offence to the rather puritanical British public and press. This ruse failed however, and the press were hostile. Jennens and Handel also fell out, as Jennens felt that the composer hadn’t taken enough time and care over the music! This was a low point for Handel, and he seriously contemplated leaving the UK and returning to Germany. Eventually, after a few years, and after a series of performances for charitable causes, the work became a firm favourite. It has been linked ever since with the composer’s generous charitable donations to the Foundling Hospital, of which he was a director along with William Hogarth and Thomas Coram.
Messiah is the masterpiece of the English Baroque, and for 200 years has been performed by both professional and amateur choirs around the world. Handel’s gift for truly memorable tunes and (notwithstanding Jennens’s concerns) the care he took in setting the text have ensured that it has remained one of the most famous works
ever composed.

Artist: RIAS Kammerchor, Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin, René Jacobs (conductor)
Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B minor is regarded by many as one of the supreme achievements of Western classical music. Even before its first complete performance, the Swiss music historian and publisher Hans Georg Nägeli described it as the “greatest musical masterpiece of all times and nations”. Many scholars believe that, along with the Art of Fugue and the Musical Offering, the work presents a summation of Bach’s musicianship as well as the most glorious presentation of the composer’s deeply held religious beliefs. Much of the Mass gave new form to vocal music that Bach had composed throughout his career, some of which was not from sacred sources (a point of contention for Leipzig churchgoers). The Kyrie and Gloria (known as the “Missa”) had been written as an application for the post of court composer at Dresden. The remaining movements, the Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei, turn the “Missa” into a “Missa tota”: the full setting of the Ordinary of the Mass.
In the Kyrie, Bach explores three different forms of musical expression in an impassioned entreaty for God’s mercy. He brings in trumpets and drums to sing the praises of the Lord in the Gloria, Credo and Sanctus, and, as so often before, saves one of his most exquisite and poignant musical phrases to express the idea of peace in the ‘et in terra pax’. The dramatic contrast forged between the ‘Crucifixus’ and ‘Et resurrexit’ movements of the Credo serve as a dramatic representation of the Christian statement of belief, and the lamenting Agnus Dei aria gives way to a exultant chorus of ‘Dona nobis pacem’ (Grant us thy peace), bringing the vast score to its conclusion. René Jacobs directs the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin in this reading, which was described as “Spacious and intimate … a compelling performance” by the BBC Music Magazine following its first release.
The Reissue of one of the finest recordings of Bach’s “Hohe Messe’!
This “compelling performance..spacious and intimate” (Gramophone) boasts of a line‐up of famous soloists: Christoph Prégardien, Matthias Goerne, Bernarda Fink and Hillevi Martinpelto, singers of world renown who have amply won their spurs in Early Music. René Jacobs and his Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the Rias Kammerchor count among the best (if not THE best..) of Baroque ensembles and choirs around the world.

Composers: Johann Sebastian Bach
Artist: Pieter-Jan Belder (harpsichord)
Bachs French Suites are the ultimate expression of the composer in this genre. This music for keyboard solo is totally autonomous and only stylistically refers to dance forms.
This is a brand new recording by harpsichordist Pieter-Jan Belder playing on an instrument made by Cornelis Bom after Ruckers, Schoonhoven 1999.
The French Suites are combined here with two more suites by Bach, BWV 818 and 819. Excellent performances with a fine ear for Bach’s music.

Composer: Luigi Boccherini
Artists: La Magnifica Comunitá, Enrico Casazza (violin and concert master)
Boccherini’s string quintets have more to offer than the almost infamous Minuet (from G 275). The gifted Italian composer has written a huge amount of chamber music, including many string quintets for different combinations of instruments. Some of his earlier quintets for 2 violins, 1 viola and 2 celli have now been recorded by the Italian Baroque ensemble La Magnifica Comunita. The ensemble pays a lot of attention to stylistic research. All members have studied at prestigious musical institutions like the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. They play on period instruments. Since Boccherini himself was a professional cello-player he often choose for this more unusual combination with the 2 celli. His music is often a vibrant mixture of Romantic, Italian and Spanish or rather Andalusian elements. Intense performances by La Magnifica Comunitá.

Variously described as “contemporary classical”, “minimalist”, and even “New Age”, Yiruma’s gorgeously peaceful piano music is impossible to classify – it is simply there to be enjoyed, to relax or even to study with. Minimal music is very popular, Yiruma is one of the most popular Minimal music pianists, regularly performing to sell‐out audiences around the globe. Despite his popularity, or maybe even a celebrity status, his music remains resolutely simple and unpretentious; more in the style of short pop music songs than regular solo piano pieces, the very best of it can be enjoyed on this exciting album.
Jeroen van Veen, himself a prolific composer as well as renowned pianist, fell in love with Yiruma’s music on first hearing. As he explains in his liner notes, the music’s enduring popularity is down to its simplicity for player and listener alike. Not many classical composers can boast of having millions of fans, and millions of YouTube views to boot; Yiruma, however, effortlessly bridges the gap between popular and classical, and, most of all, allows the listener to relax and unwind.
