One of the most outlandish ideas in modern physics is the multiverse - the idea that there exist multiple universes. Given that scientists tend to be fairly conservative and that this idea seems like a such a reach, it is natural to wonder why this idea is seriously discussed in leading scientific circles. In this video, Fermilab’s Dr. Don Lincoln explains how the existence of a multiverse is a possible answer to the question of why the universe seems so well tuned for human life.

A new camera for the South Pole Telescope, called SPT-3G, will aid scientists in creating the deepest, most sensitive map yet of the cosmic microwave background, allowing them to peer more closely into the era of the universe just after the Big Bang.
From time immemorial humans have been charting the night sky to make sense of the cosmos—from the mapping of stars for navigation to today’s digital surveys of galaxies to understand dark matter. In this 60-minute-long presentation Dr. Priya Natarajan, author of the book “Mapping the Heavens,” recounts the evolution of celestial map-making and shows how maps literally track our ever evolving cosmic view. In particular, she discusses recent developments in our understanding of two invisible entities: dark matter and black holes. Dr. Natarajan is a theoretical astrophysicist at Yale University, interested in cosmology, gravitational lensing and black hole physics. Her research focuses on making dark matter maps of clusters of galaxies, the largest known repositories of dark matter.

Does a $125 lens hold up to a similar lens at twice the price? Does twice the price mean twice the quality? I show you the difference between two Canon 50mm lenses and let you decide. Remember, it isn't how much gear you have, or what you spend on it. It's what you DO with it. (NOTE: $350 for a lens is NOT an expensive lens by far).

Arvo Pärt: Ukuaru valss.
Jeroen Van Veen has released a series of acclaimed recordings on Brilliant Classics of music by the masters of Minimalism, that 1960s-derived aesthetic in which it is not so much the case that more can be said with less as that less seems to be necessary in an increasingly noisy and chaotic world. The Estonian composer Arvo Pärt has never counted himself as among the minimalist number, nor indeed was he schooled in their new traditions, but emerged in the 1960s as an angry and dissonant voice whose musically expressed anger against Communist oppression of his native country could barely be contained within the tumultuous textures of works such as the Third Symphony, but a combination of personal circumstances and aesthetic decisions led him to pare back his style to the world of eerie calm and yet underlying melancholy that has made works such as the Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten such an enduring favourite even among audiences who would not otherwise count themselves as aficionados of the European contemporary music scene. But then Pärt has never fitted into any one stylistic box, and alongside the quiet rapture of Für Alina we may find the student-era tinkling of the intriguing early Dance Pieces, as well as arrangements of classics such as Fratres and Spiegel im Spiegel – here interpreted by Dutch cellist Douw Fonda – that seem to preserve their special mood no matter what the instrumental forces; a quality they share with works of Pärt's compositional idol, J.S. Bach.

Unlike Mozart, Haydn for some reason failed to realise the potential of the new pianoforte as a concertante instrument, and his concertos for keyboard (some spurious) tend to focus on the organ or harpsichord.
The three works on this CD are all authentic Haydn. The 4th concerto was composed in 1770 for the blind pianist Maria Theresa Paradis, for whom Mozart and Salieri also composed piano concertos. The 3rd concerto dates from 1771, and has an especially beautiful slow movement.
The D major concerto No.11 is a masterpiece and dates from 1780. It is much nearer to Mozart’s concertos of this date, and some have gone as far as to label it Haydn’s ‘only’ piano concerto. It is a big work, again with a wonderful slow movement following an impressive opening movement. It is however the finale ‘Rondo all’Ungarese’ that has made it one of Haydn’s most famous and best loved works.

Composer: Pietro Antonio Locatelli
Artists: Igor Ruhadze (violin), Ensemble Violine Capricciosi
Virtuosity, showy improvisation and stratospherically high violin playing are the characteristics of Baroque composer Pietro Antonio Locatelli’s theatrical concerti grossi for soloists and ripieno. While concerti grossi from this time could usually be divided into two types, ‘da camera’ and ‘da chiesa’ – with the former containing more dance movements – Locatelli went down his own distinct path, creating a new model more like that of Torelli. His ripieno section was larger than the traditional accompanying group, and his slow movements contained drawn-out notes over which the first violinist or harpsichordist was free to improvise. Indeed, one harpsichord passage in Op.7 is so extraordinarily virtuosic that Locatelli labelled it ‘ad libitum’, presumably to avoid frightening the amateur musician.
Only the most consummate and accomplished musicians can perform works of this calibre. Igor Ruhadze and his ensemble Violini Capricciosi have spent years recording Locatelli’s works, having previously released his violin concertos and trio sonatas, described by Gramophone magazine as ‘brilliantly and at times breathtakingly performed’. They bring their expertise to this release once more, with a tight and supple ripieno section supporting the sumptuous, virtuosic solo playing.
The Concerto Grosso is a popular Baroque form, in which two instrumental groups complete against each other: a small group of soloists and the tutti of the orchestral group. It is the forerunner of the solo concerto form, which features only one solo instrument.
This set present the complete Concerti Grossi by Pietro Antonio Locatelli, modelled on the popular concerti grossi of his teacher Corelli. The writing, as might be expected from Locatelli the devil violinist, is highly virtuosic and brilliant, inventive in harmony and counterpoint, written to impress and entertain.
This set is part of the Locatelli Edition, the complete works by Locatelli, as performed by Igor Ruhadze and his early music band Violini Capricciosi, playing with great gusto, zest and dazzling virtuosity.
