If you were looking at two shapes—specifically, a pointy, jagged polygon and an amoeboid-like splotch—which would you name "bouba," and which would you name "kiki"? In most scientific research, upwards of 90 percent of people will associate the pointy one with "kiki" and and the rounded one with "bouba." This worldwide phenomenon is known as the "Bouba-Kiki Effect" and has been recorded in many languages, and even with toddlers. Why most of us share the same tendency to link certain nonsensical visual and auditory stimuli isn't clear, but cognitive psychologists like Kelly McCormick have several compelling theories.

Flaunting frilly tentacles and a curious ability to reflect light, these tiny aquatic anomalies are reminiscent of the flashy balls and shag carpets of the '70s. Biologist Lindsey Dougherty of UC Berkley investigates the aptly dubbed, "Disco Clam," revealing molecular foundation for how they get so groovy.

For humans to travel to the Moon and Mars, they'll need a companion - a lowly weed. Just as Matt Damon survives on Mars in The Martian because he cultivates plants in the red planet's hostile conditions, astronauts will need to understand how to grow plants in extreme climates. Dr. Anna-Lisa Paul and Dr. Robert J. Ferl at the University of Florida, Gainesville Space Plants Lab, put weeds in unique situations - like sending them to the International Space Station - to study their behavior on a molecular level. Their research could pave the way for growing plants in extreme climates on Earth, the Moon, long-term space travel, and even Mars.

"Someone described my office as an eight-year-old's daydream," says Jill Tarter, astronomer and the inspiration for the character in Carl Sagan's "Contact." As the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute's first employee, Tarter has accumulated E.T.-themed office ornaments for the last thirty years -- including a bottle of wine only to be opened "only upon detection of Extraterrestrial signal."

Viewing these New Zealand glow worms, you can be forgiven for thinking you're looking at a star-lit night sky. Using a small light organ at the end of their bodies, these tiny gnat larvae light up the surfaces of the caves and ravine walls they call home. Their glowing bodies attract their prey, other insects. They've also lured in biochemists Miriam Sharpe and Kurt Krause, who hope to discover the molecular basis for the glow worm's bioluminescence.

Blue whales can grow to 90 feet -- that's longer than a tennis court. Getting that big requires a lot of fuel, says Jeremy Goldbogen, a postdoctoral researcher at the Cascadia Research Collective. That's why Goldbogen studies the whales' dining habits. They feed on krill, slurping in millions of the mini crustaceans along with hundreds of thousands of pounds of water in a single gulp. With the help of data tags and a National Geographic Crittercam, Goldbogen and colleagues found that blue whales do underwater acrobatics while they eat -- specifically a move they coined "the blue whale barrel roll."

Science Friday investigates the secret life of cheese. We visited Hendricks Farms and Dairy in Telford, PA--home to award-winning cheese-maker Trent Hendricks. He walks us through how he makes a hybrid cheese he calls cheddar blue.
